This is from climbing at the gunks on 11/20/99. After a pretty mellow morning, we finally got around to climbing around noon, strting up on Arrow. As we prepared for the second pitch, it began to grow dark out, and by th time I was halfway through the pitch, it was dark enough that I needed to turn on the old headlamp. It was full on nighttime by the time I topped out, but not to dark as there was a good sized moon rising up surrounded by clouds opposite the cliffs. After fumbling in the wind and cold with an over-cammed cam in the anchor, we were good to go, and rapped off on double ropes. It was the absolute most amazing rappel I have ever done (and admittedly I've only been doing this for a scant year). It was free until about half the way down, and it was pretty awsome dangling there, a hundred feet off the deck with the sheer white faces spreading out a glowing softly with the moonlight behind me, the entire valley spread out and twinkling before me and the moon, surrounded by silver edged clouds shinig high up above me. I wanted to sit there for a while, but it was just too windy and cold! Oh, well, what'd I expect for the end of November?
