A Quick Bio

Sean Rhea was born July 4th, 1970 and has been a Tennessee native all his life, growing up in and around Nashville. He attended Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, and graduated in 1992 with a bachelor degree in M.I.S. He married in 1993 and he and his wife, Shelley, took up residence in Cookeville for several years before moving back to their hometown in Hendersonville, TN. Currently Sean is webmaster for the State of Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, as well as a freelance artist. Growing up surrounded by a number of other artist and musician friends helped to cement an early artistic fervor which has never subsided. Sean's art centers primarily on the fantasy/scifi genre, but commisions have also included many portraits, including a commision by the state for a portrait of the governor. In addition to art, Sean also enjoys fencing (primarily sabre), researching Celtic history and lore, keeping up with his dogs (Ember and Guinness), gaming, playing bass, reading, and, of course, music. His musical interests include everything from New Age to Progressive. Currently, Sean is trying to learn to speak/read/write Irish Gaelic in order get closer in touch with his Irish literary and musical influences.

My Interests

  • My Shiba Inu's - Ember & Guinness
Ember is a beautiful, sly, mischievous and spunky female red Shiba and Guinness is our steady, affectionate male black & tan Shiba. The two of them constantly bicker about who is in charge. Ember usually relents, but lets him know she can still whip his Shiba butt any time she wants!

Also be sure to check out Lynda Birmantas' Shiba homepage which has a WONDERFUL gallery and information on the Shiba discussion list.

  • Art
I'm heavily influenced by SF/Fantasy art (a la Michael Whelan, Larry Elmore, etc.). I work primarily in pencils, watercolors, and pen and ink. I have also been steadily working at doing more electronic art via my graphics tablet. You get all the results without the material cost and mess! Although, my opportunities (due to time constraints) have become more sparse, I'm a semi-professional. One day I hope to be able to follow my art full time and save computers for recreation only (see bio for specifics on that count).

  • Fencing
I'm one of the founding members of the Foil Epee and Sabre Society at Tennessee Tech. I am primarily a saberist and epeeist, with ratings in both. I rarely compete in foil...why, you ask? Because foil is for those who aren't good enough to be proper sabre or epee fencers! That's a joke, for those foilists who are humor impaired. I am also a sword collector (I hope to include pictures later).

  • Music
Progressive - Asia, Yes, Marillion, Rush, Jethro Tull, Alan Parsons Project, Glass Hammer, Mike Oldfield.
Folk/Ambient - Clannad, Enya, Secret Garden, Dougie MacLean, Silly Wizard, One, Tangerine Dream, Jon Mark, Jonn Serrie, Hilary Stagg.

Celtic Rock - The Young Dubliners, Runrig

Guitar - Stu Hamm, Joe Satrianni, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Gary Moore.

I'm also an 80's music afficianado and play bass when I have the time and inclination.

  • Gaming
I will honestly play just about anything (tabletop, computer, live action). I really enjoy a good strategy and tactics game, regardless of genre - Axis and Allies, Supremacy, Battletech and Warhammer Fantasy Battles are personal favorites. I also enjoy games on the roleplaying end of the spectrum, especially the GURPS system by Steve Jackson games. I've been playing various roleplaying games for almost twenty years now. Right now I'm hooked on EverQuest, which is the best computer roleplaying adaptation I have seen. The world is complex and BIG, the graphics are nice, and the game satisfies my nostalgia for the old days of AD&D. Also be sure to check out Dark Reign II by Pandemic Studios. I was involved in the beta testing and a good friend of mine was one of the games' project members. I must say: the game ROCKS!

  • Celtic History
I'm a Celtic history afficianado with a strong emphasis on lore, language, music, and culture.

  • Authors
Roger Zelazny (The Amber Series), Stephen R. Donaldson (The Thomas Covenant Chronicles and Mordant's Need), Keith Taylor (Bard I,II,III,IV), C.J. Cherryh (The Morgaine Saga, Faerie in Shadow), Arthur Landis (The Camelot Series), Margaret Weiss/Tracy Hickman (Dragonlance and The Death Gate Cycle), L. Sprague DeCamp (The Complete Enchanter), Christopher Stasheff (The Warlock Series), Keith Laumer (The Lafayette O'Leary Series), Morgan Llywelyn, Guy Gavriel Kay (The Fionavar Tapestry), Robin Hobb (both the Assassin and Liveship Traders trilogies), and last (but certainly not least), the master himself: J.R.R. Tolkien

  • Comics
Witchblade, Elfquest, Gen13, Dawn, Grimjack, Aria, Stinz

  • TV Shows
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Farscape, Highlander, Babylon5, Due South, Voyager, X-Files.

  • Movies
Highlander (but there really CAN be only one - that is the FIRST one), Braveheart, LadyHawke, Dances with Wolves, X-Men, Gladiator, 13th Warrior, Aliens, Bladerunner, Labyrinth, Princess Bride, The Last Unicorn, the Star Wars movies, Hudson Hawke, The Mummy, The Indiana Jones trilogy...and probably countless others I can't think of.

  • Sports
I'm an avid college football fan. I'm also the black sheep of the family, being an Alabama fan, whereas the rest of my family are U.T. fans. In the NFL, my team is the Miami Dolphins.

  • Wolves
Quite frankly, I'm crazy about the critters. That's probably why they're my dominant (alpha?) decorating scheme. I just wish they didn't have such an unfounded reputation. Ignorance breeds fear or at the very least a lack of respect. What other species have we taken such great pains to destroy so utterly? I say this, not from a P.C. perspective, but as a realist. The stupidity of the stance on wolves is nothing short of amazing. The governor of Alaska was quoted as saying about wolves, "We can't afford to let nature run wild..." One of the signs carried by ranchers protesting the reintroduction of the wolves into Yellowstone said (I swear),"Wolves are the Saddam Hussein of the animal kingdom". Just goes to show not ALL humans are smarter than animals; The truth is, they are neither the evil beasts of folklore, nor are they the sweet, cuddly, vapid and doe-eyed creatures that you see depicted in so many wildlife statues and prints.
