The Star Beast (1954) This one has Disney written all over it. It's a provincial story of an oversized extra-terrestrial pet named Lummox that doesn't know how to mind it's earthly manners. Soon young John Thomas is desperate to save his pet from the plottings of his overbearing mother, the befuddled town officials, a duplicitous scientist, and the meddlesome Departmental of Spatial Affairs. Just when things seemed to be going John's way, an incident of galactic proportions turns the whole mess on its head, and we're left to wonder who the real 'pet' is. But this one ends happily-ever-after... sort of. A fun, fast read, but none to deep, and in many places predictable and banal. I did find that Mr. Kiku of the DSA was an interesting and well developed character, and his dealings within the bureaucracy were often humorous. Click here --> to order this book (paperback) from |
