Floating
above his seat, Ultrann scans the crowd and Torgal's
Pit. "It has been a while since I've hosted a match
here! I hope it is enjoyable for all." With a wave
of his hand, he silences the crowd: "Welcome one
and all to the third match of Season Two here at Torgal's
Pit! Today we have the hell-spawn conjurer, Whisper,
against newcomer Dairon Gold, master of deception. I'm
sure both will use whatever resources are at their disposal
to deal with their foe. With that said, let no more
time be wasted. Begin the match!" He waves his
hand again, and the noise of the crowd resumes. The
gates swing open, and the combatants enter the arena
First to enter is Whisper. His dark demeanour and
blood-red eyes are clear indications of his wickedness.
"I look forward to rending the flesh of this
rookie!", he cackles. Dairon Gold then enters.
He wears no armor, but he carries a finely crafted
longbow on his back. This young man in his twenties
looks inexperienced, yet somehow dangerous.
Whisper acts first, casting a stone before him and
shrouding himself in darkness. With a trick of his
own, Dairon chants a few incantations of magic and
disappears from sight. Ultrann mutters to Torgal,
"Hmm, I hope this little game of hide-and-seek
does not last long. The crowd is sure to turn if nothing
happens soon! I hope I am not forced to intervene
"
About five long seconds pass, and nothing happens.
The crowd starts to get restless and some boos are
heard. About ten seconds after their disappearing
acts, a snarling hyena with glowing red eyes appears
near the middle of the arena. It begins to sniff for
a sign of its prey, and it suddenly seems to have
found something!
The devil-dog makes a quick dash at something and
apparently knocks it down and proceeds to bite at
it. At the same time, another fiendish hyena appears
and joins its companion. It too chomps down on something
unseen, but something that is now bleeding on the
dirt floor. Soon after, another devil-dog appears
and joins its brethren.
Two of the hyenas appear to have locked onto the
scent of its prey, but they both miss in their attacks.
The third seems unable to pick the scent up. A faint
but audible chuckle is heard from an unknown location
within the arena, but presumably it is the dark conjurer,
Whisper.
Suddenly, Dairon Gold appears, bloodied and bruised.
Muttering a few words of magic, a multi-coloured blast
arches out from his fingers, covering a wide arc of
the arena. Two of the hyenas appear struck with blindness,
while the third does not. An invisible form was also
briefly revealed during the spray, but it quickly
returns to its unseen state.
The unblinded dog disappears, its time on this Plane
over. However, a devil-rat takes its place and rushes
to attack the now-visible prey, Dairon Gold. It bites
at him, but misses. He begins to walk back towards
the nearest wall, incanting more words of magic. Another
fiendish dire rat appears and attacks, but both miss.
Dairon steps against the wall and strikes his quarterstaff
against the skull of the recently-appearing fiend,
smashing its head through and through. Yet another
hell-rat appears, but strikes an invisible force on
its attack. Dairon utters some more words of magic,
with no apparent effect.
While one rat disappears, another comes forth from
nothingness. Like its fellow demon-spawn, they are
unable to penetrate their prey's mystical defenses.
Dairon lets his quarterstaff loose again, killing
the newest dire rat with a mighty blow. Yet another
dire rat appears and manages to bite Dairon by way
of an attack from the side. Another bite wound to
add to the earlier ones, and Dairon bleeds some more.
His skin has become pasty-white. He swings his staff,
connecting at the one that made him bleed, but he
does not kill it. Again, the rats attack, but are
unable to draw blood. Dairon strikes at the wounded
one, killing it.
As the last of Whisper's summoned beasts disappears,
Whisper himself appears. "You have killed some
of my pretties, but I will finish the job myself!"
With that, he launches a crossbow bolt, which deflects
off an invisible barrier in front of Dairon. Whisper
mutters curses under his foul breath. Dairon invokes
some words of magic, and two streaks of magical energy
streak forth, striking Whisper squarely in the chest.
Wounded but undaunted, Whisper reloads his crossbow
and fires off another bolt (to no avail). Dairon pulls
his longbow from his side and lets a missile of his
own loose. It too misses.
Whisper and Dairon trade a few missed arrows from
about 30 feet apart. Suddenly, Whisper lets loose
a bolt that streaks forth and penetrates through the
mystical barriers before him. Dairon is stuck with
a bolt squarely at his heart. A look of horror crosses
Dairon's face, and Whisper begins an evil laugh. But
Dairon looks down at the bolt, looks up, smiles and
starts a laugh of his own. "Yet another trick
up my masterful sleeve, my devil-dog of an opponent!"
Whisper's jaw drops as Dairon lets loose an arrow
that strikes Whisper in the right shoulder joint.
The arrow head pierces a major artery, letting blood
spray in a 5-foot arc, as the devilish one collapses
unconscious to the floor of the Pit.
Ultrann stands and calls the match to an end. "A
little beginner's luck, I see. It is perhaps a good
thing I didn't have to intervene!"
Dairon: You barely survived this one. Let's hope
more than luck keeps you alive in the future.
Whisper: Your summoned creatures were doing a decent
number on him, but you just couldn't deliver the final
blow.
