1: INTRODUCTION

The following guide assumes (perhaps unfairly) the reader has a working knowledge of Internet basics. While the maintainer is willing to help anyone who emails him with a request, that is not the purpose of this document.

As you read, bear in mind the following general disclaimer: THIS IS THE INTERNET. You can't blindly believe everything you read. It is more than likely that errors, bias, and outright lies enter a subjective work such as this. I apologise in advance for this, but take no responsibility for injuries incurred by said errors. To the best of my knowledge, all subjects have been treated fairly and equitably except where the sarcasm is obvious.

If you have any questions (or better yet, suggestions, answers or corrections), please email them to the maintainer.

2: TRANSMISSION DETAILS

Broadcast details

"The X Files" was originally planned (I use the word loosely) to last five seasons. All five have been produced. Season Seven is currenly airing in Australia (and, for that matter, the United States). After that, "The X Files" will only appear in movie form. Probably. Apparently, Gillian Anderson has signed for an eighth season, even though David Duchovny and Chris Carter have both said that season seven will be the last season they're having anything to do with.

Channel Ten (Capital) currently holds the free-to-air rights to "The X Files". The episodes screen on Wednesdays, 8.30pm. This month's episodes are:

       3/5 `Orison'
      10/5 `The Amazing Maleeni'
      17/5 `Signs and Wonders'
      24/5 `Sein und Zeit'
      31/5 `Closure'

Channel Seven (Prime Television) has the free-to-air rights to "The X Files Movie". No word of when it might screen.

Foxtel has (not surprisingly) the pay TV rights to XF episodes. The channel of interest is FOX8. Episodes from Season Three are showing in order on Fridays 8.30 pm (repeated at 1.15 am the following day). Two episodes (S5) screen back-to-back on Sundays 8.30 pm (repeated at 2 am the following Monday, and 12.45 am the following Saturday). Probably. Time is not my strong suit. These episodes are showing in order.

Episode titles

Episodes of "The X Files" do have titles, but these don't appear during the screening of the show. (Although there's a persistent rumour that it appears in the final frame of legalese fine print -- in fact, it's only the episode's production number which appears.)

Some TV guides (e.g. "TV Week") print the episode titles when the series is screening. The titles can also be found at XF sites on the Web.

I'd recommend Brian Polykett's excellent Australian web site, GEOS, which has a wealth of information about the X Files, Millennium, Star Trek, et al.

Specifically, try the following two links for XF material:
broadcast dates http://www.swd.net.au/geos/schedule.html
episode index http://www.swd.net.au/xfiles/

Alternatively you might prefer Fox's official (but incomplete) X Files site:

http://www.thex-files.com/epiindx.htm

Production order and air dates

The order in which the episodes were produced is not necessarily the same order in which they air. Production order depends on which guest stars are avaiable, and when; which locations are nearby; etc.

Channel Ten has until very recently been very good about showing the episodes in the same order as they screened in the U.S. They screened the episodes `Tithonus', `Two Fathers' and `One Son' out of order, apparently to show the two-parter `Two Fathers'/`One Son' before a ratings survey was completed.

Visit the Fox site to see the official episode ordering, although be warned: the official site is NOT up-to-date. (At time of writing, the episode guide only listed S6 up to `Milagro'.)

3: THE INTERNET

aus.tv.x-files

This newsgroup is dedicated to discussion of "The X Files" in Australia. Anyone is welcome. Except spammers. A newbie-friendly group, aus.tv.x-files (or ATXF as it is known) has a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). The two most important of these are: the ATXF FAQ and `Understanding ATXF' (both posted weekly by Danny). You are directed to these for more detailed help.

The regulars have a tendency to quote Shakespeare, 80s pop lyrics and 60s television all in the same post. This is one of its charms. If this disturbs you, avoid the posts marked SUNBURN and TAN because they're full of that sort of thing.

You have been warned.

alt.tv.x-files

This newsgroup is dedicated to discussion of "The X Files" in America. Note the vital difference. The Australian broadcast of "The X Files" tends to be behind the American schedule. This means that Australian readers of alt.tv.x-files run the risk of having the plots of episodes spoiled.

alt.tv.x-files.analysis

This newsgroup is devoted to detailed analysis of (and blatant speculation about) the themes, imagery and other literary things which appear in "The X Files". It is a rather intense group. Again, you run the risk of being spoiled if you read this group. Besides, aus.tv.x-files could do with the REL boost.

alt.tv.x-files.creative

This newsgroup is dedicated to fan fiction (fanfic to the initiated). The contributors to this group post (mostly) original fiction featuring characters from "The X Files". The quality can range from superb to mediocre.

There is an archive site at http://gossamer.x-philes.com/

A very complete list of other XF fanfic sites can be found at http://members.aol.com/ksnicholas/fanfic/xfiles.html

Mailing lists

There are currently four-and-a-half Australian mailing lists I am aware of. As with all mailing lists, PLEASE keep the subscription (and unsubscription) details sent to you.

Fans in the ACT who wish to join a list should subscribe to SydXF. Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart don't have mailing lists because they've been bombed back to the Stone Age--uh, I mean, because XF fans in the respective states and territory don't appear to be interested in setting up mailing lists. (Fair enough too, considering what passes for traffic on the lists below.)

WA fans do have a mailing list, I think, but I've lost the details :(

WARNING! DO NOT SUBSCRIBE to any of these lists if you are seeking discussions of current, past or future X-files episodes. These are social forums for individuals who happen to have a common interest in "The X Files".

BrisXF

Send a message to Majordomo@desire.emails.net with `subscribe brisxf' in the body (without the quotes).

This is an announcements only mailing list. It announces video nights, social gatherings, birthdays etc. If you want to chat, use BrisXF-Chat.

BrisXF-Chat

Send a message to Majordomo@desire.emails.net with `subscribe brisxf-chat' in the body (without the quotes).

This is a high volume social mailing list. Do not discuss politics on this list. That's what BrisXF-Soapbox is for.

BrisXF-Soapbox

Send a message to Majordomo@desire.emails.net with `subscribe brisxf-soapbox' in the body (without the quotes).

An opinionated `issues' discussion list (politics, religion, society).

MelbXF

Send a message to Majordomo@zikzak.zikzak.net with `subscribe x-philes' in the body (without the quotes).

This is a low volume list, primarily concerned with gatherings.

SydXF

Send a message to Majordomo@desire.emails.net with `subscribe sydxf' in the body (without the quotes).

A low volume list, primarily announcements but the occasional joke gets passed along. There's not really any rules about content.

IRC

aus.tv.x-files has an affiliated IRC channel, namely, #atxf. IRC sessions are held nearly every night, starting sometime between 6.30 and 7 pm.

The favoured servers are all on IRCNet network. The first three are probably better than the last one.

And for the consenting adults among us, don't forget #atxf_hottub!

NatGat Oh Oh

Register your interest in NatGat Oh Oh by visiting http://www.natgat.com, soon to have actual content! (Registration consists of supplying a contact e-mail, not any cash transactions.)

And, um, that's it for the moment. I guess there will be news posted to ATXF / to people who have registered on the site.

Web

There's more web sites about the X Files than you can shake a browser at. The following have a particularly Australian slant:

4: MERCHANDISING

"The X Files" is a cash cow and don't the marketers know it. Seemingly everything you can emblazon with an `X' has been mass produced and then some. The closest we've come to Australian XF merchandising was an astoundingly lame `Official "The X Files" Modem' (stop me before I kill again!). Oh, and the junior novelisation of `The Calusari' by Garth Nix.

Here's an incomplete list of the merchandise:

Occasional reviews of merchandise appear in aus.tv.x-files, with the MERCH tag in the header.

"The X Files" DVDs

The DVD of "The X Files" (that's the movie) was released in Australia on March 22. I don't have any more information about it.

Konrad Douglas Frye, posting on alt.tv.x-files, reports that Fox will be releasing `region 1' DVDs of "The X Files". There will be three releases, all on 26th October 1999. Each DVD will contain two episodes (although there's no sign yet which ones), and an introduction by Chris Carter. And that's it, which seems a pretty bare offering considering the touted wonders of DVD.

Please note that Australia is in `region 4', and there's no word yet when (if ever) the DVDs will be released locally. However, it is possible to buy `multi-region' DVD players, even if these are, ahem, slightly suspect.

5: CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

I'm sure there's lots of these. Anyone with information should contact me. This includes anyone who wants to promote their club.

Official club

There is an official Australian fan club, imaginatively titled "The Official X-Files Fan Club of Australia". This fan club is run by Photon Productions (PPC), the people responsible for distributing "The X Files" calendar, among other things. The following (PROBABLY HORRIBLY OUT OF DATE) information came from the club magazine (issue #1):

A $19.95 membership will get you a membership kit (containing colour postcards and prints, a membership card and a four issues of the club newsletter), two editions of "The X-Files Magazine" and two poster magazines.

For $49.95 (a Gold Membership), you will get all of the above and an exclusive t-shirt and a numbered, limited edition 8"x10" colour print.

Cheque/Money order/credit card details to

Photon Productions
GPO Box 2067
Sydney, 2001

Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

However, early reports said that joining this club was a terrible waste of money. I'd be glad to receive reports that this has changed.

Unofficial clubs

At the time of writing, I only have the details for one other club (located in Victoria). Titled (with imagination to equal Photon's) "The X Files Fan Club of Australia", there is a single (Australian) membership fee $17 (or a family membership fee of $25). Membership gives you a membership card, discounts in certain shops (listed on the back of the club newsletter) and the forementioned newsletter ('The Field Journal', edited by Maura Fitzgerald) every two months. The discounts are chiefly in Victoria, but there are a few discounts available in other states (except Tasmanina and ACT).

The club can be contacted at:

The X-Files Fan Club of Australia
Locked Bag 1013
Flemington 3031

or via e-mail at xffca@justicemail.com.

6: IF YOU LIKED THIS...

We have come to what may be the most contentious part of SEP: other texts the `average' "The X Files" fan might enjoy.

WARNING! WARNING! Purely subjective list based on author's likes and opinions of what others like (or ought to).

Television

Fiction

Anything by Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Leanne Frahm or Roger Zelazny. (Okay, that's all science fiction. Peter Carey is cool, too).
