Motorcycle Handle
The "motorcycle
handle" is the only part on this saber replica which is not aluminum.
This part was custom made from pre formed plastic pieces you can purchase
at Home Depot. By constructing this part of the handle from rubber-type-plastic,
you are staying more true to the original prop than if it were made from
aluminum or some other metal.
This mysterious "plastic piece" is actually what is called an "assorted
plumber's washer." Though it looks nothing like the flat, metal fender
washers we are used to seeing, it is nonetheless a washer (go figure).
You shouldn't have too much trouble locating them since they're readily
available at Home Depot. Don't bother looking in the regular washer
section; they're not there. Instead, go where they sell the chrome
pipe. There should be a section right next to the chrome pipe where
they also sell pvc pipe. (This is a different section than where
they sell the long and over-sized pieces of pvc. Look for the smaller
ones.) Directly above the smaller pvc, there should be some boxes
where they sell accessory pieces that go along with the pipe. Look
for a small box of "Assorted Plumber's Washers." Or, I've also seen
them called, "Washer Assortment." Inside the box, there's several
different types of washers, including rubber, brass, and plastic.
You need to buy eight boxes. (Don't worry, they're only .99 cents
per box.)
You only need
two of the six washers that come in each box. Each plastic piece
makes up only one half of a single coil. So, in order to make one
whole coil, you have to connect two of the pieces face to face. If
this seems ambiguous to you right now, you'll understand once you see the
plastic pieces. Trust me, it's really quite intuitive once you see
it in front of you.
The assembly of the handle is perhaps the easiest part of the whole
saber. These plastic washers will fit perfectly and snugly over a
1 and 1/4 inch chrome tube. So it's really just a matter of fitting
the washers over the tube, making sure they correspond to the v-shaped
grove in the handle. Apply some epoxy and set it aside to dry.
Voila! You're done! It's truly that simple. Of course,
you will have to paint it black later, once you have the whole saber fit
together.
