The Voyage to See Star Wars!
A friend of mine and I traveled about 250 miles to see Star Wars in a THX theater. We left at about 2:30 from Oneonta, NY to go to Rochester, which is the nearest THX theater to us. We were well prepared for this trip with plenty of music to listen to and food to eat. The trip to Rochester was long, but uneventful. We had a friend who lived in Rochester buy the tickets in advance for Star Wars because we knew that the early shows would sell out quickly.
We were going to stay with some relatives of mine overnight. When we arrived at my relatives' house we found out that he had been able to get tickets to the 12:20 am showing at the theater. Most of the other shows had sold out Our friend had bought these tickets for us on one condition, that we give him a ride to this concert at a local youth center. My friend and I were more than happy to do this. We left from the house at about 8:00, so we had some time to kill. We tried following the directions that our friend gave us, but this ended up sending us an hour's drive in the wrong direction. Needless to say, we were not happy with that. We finally figured out where to go, and picked up our friend from his dorm a couple of hours late. We went to the youth center he wanted to go to for a while, and then it was time to go see STAR WARS!
We got to the theater about 20 minutes early and already there was a crowd of about a hundred people waiting to get in. We had to wait while they let the last of the people from the showing before us out then we all flooded into the theater and got ready. I had never been in a THX theater before this so I didn't know what to expect. As I watched the movie trailers I found out. Before Star Wars, they showed a trailer for Volcano, which totally blew me away because it was incredibly loud. The amazing thing was that as loud as it got, the sound didn't distort at all. I was almost deafened after seeing that trailer, but I recovered soon enough. As well as the trailer for Volcano, they showed the trailer for Men in Black as sci-fi/comedy move, and the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. That trailer looked very cool, with all the added scenes and special effects.
The movie itself was incredible!! The sound was loud, so you could actually hear all the stuff you couldn't make out on your little TV at home. The movie sounded great with all the new sound effects and the digitally remastered soundtrack. Almost all of the added scenes were great! The only change that Lucas made that I didn't like was the scene with Greedo and Solo in the Cantina. I refuse to believe that even a bounty hunter as bad as Greedo could miss from only a few feet away. Other than that one scene, the movie was incredible. I had a great time seeing the movie on the theater for the the first time! I plan to make the trip to Rochester again when Return of the Jedi: SE comes out!
