Who is who in Space: Above and Beyond?
Assigned to the spacecraft carrier USS Saratoga, SCVN-2812, the 58th Squadron
(known as the 'Wildcards") serve as a combination of aeroespace superiority,
support, ground attack and tactical assault units. The squad's typical equipment
load consist of either SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jets (known as the
'Hammerhead' fighter) or an ISSAPC transport carrier, and full personal weapons
loads (including M-590 Assault Rifles, hand pistols, K-bar combat knives and
smart grenades). The unit's current roster lists the following Marine Corps
personnel:
Lieutenant Nathan West, played by Morgan Weisser, nickname "King", is
a former crew man on the Tellus colony mission, he was dropped from the flight.
In order to reunite himself with Kylen Celina (who remained on board), Nathan
transferred to the Marines in hopes of being posted to Tellus. But after the
destruction of the colony by the Chigs and Kylen's capture, Nathan's whole
life has been turned towards finding her once again.
Captain Shane Vansen, played by Kristen Cloke, nickname "Queen",
squad leader ('honcho') of the 58th. Born into a Marine Corps family, Shane's
father and mother (both sergeants) were killed by Silicate terrorist during the
A.I. wars on Earth. After raising her younger sister to maturity, Shane
volunteered to join the Corps both in honour of her parents, and for a chance
to seek out her own purpose in life.
Lieutenant Cooper Hawkes, played by Rodney Rowland, nickname "Jack", is, like
Colonel McQueen an In Vitro or 'Tank". Born after the A.I. wars, Cooper
escaped from his training facility to live a rough life on the street, forced
to grow up quickly to survive. Arrested after taking revenge on a gang of racist
vigilantes, Cooper's prison sentence was commuted to enforced enrolment in the Marine
Corps.
Lieutenant Paul Wang, played by Joel De La Fuente, nickname "Joker", is brought
up in an urban ghetto. Wang took the Merines as his chance that life for something
better. Despite his outer personality as The Wild Cards 'Joker', deep down inside
Wang is shy and insecure, using his sense of humour to cover his fears of failure.
He loves to play and watch basketball.
Lieutenant Vanessa Damphousse, played by Lanei Chapman, nickname "Ace", became
a Marine in order to find a direction in her life, after becoming dissatisfied with
civilian life. With high-scoring technical qualifications, Damphousse (nicknamed
'Phousse' or 'Damn Fool' by her squad mates) uses her skills to the fullest as the
58th's hardware expert.
Lieutenant Colonel Tyrus Cassius (T.C.) McQueen, played by James Morrison,
is the commanding officer of the 58th, former member and sole survivor of the
illfated 127th 'Angry Angels' squadron. McQueen is an In Vitro, a human being
conceived by artificial insemination. While some discrimination towards his
non-human origins does take place, McQueen nevertheless performs as one of the
USMC's best officers and sees it as his duty to prepare the members of the 58th
for the war with the Chigs.
