I like this page very much. At one point I was able to rent this film at Blockbuster. Now I want to buy it and have found it very difficult to order. I am a filmmaker myself. My black and white 8mm film "Road Kill" has some shots in it that are delliberatly made to look like THX 1138. For instance, there is a road sign in my film that reads 25 MPH. The way I framed it was very close, the shot repeats throuout the film, I'm 25 years old, and the film is set in the 25th century roughly. That film has been very infuenlial in my young film career.

I've always been fascinated by this movie. Beautiful in it's sterile simplicity, mesmerizing in it's portrayal of man's struggle to overcome the oppression of his own machines, similar to the HAL sub-plot in 2001 in this respect. That car chase scene was wesome too, I always wondered what kind it was, perhaps a modified Lotus? Thanks for the site, it's the only one that I can find.

Thanks for putting up this web page! I went away to a boarding school as a high school senior in 1981, and they showed THX 1138 one very wintry evening. I never forgot this movie or stopped thinking about it. The parable of the sanitary sexless feelingles society and the illicit desires and eventual escape struck a chord with me. I was particularly enamored with Maggie McOmie. She was very beautiful, and the baldness only accentuated her beautiful head. Her pretty face, her eyes, her skin, her freckles, a d the tenderness with which she played her part, even though there wasn't much dialog, I found striking. I am very disappointed that she has apparently never been in another film and has seemingly vanished. The final scene of the film I also found powerfu - the awe and terror of freedom. If there is one thing more I would have wanted from your site, it is to answer the question: what ever happened to Maggie McOmie?

I never saw the movie, but I read the book. Was the book an adaption of the movie? If not, who was the original author of the book? What I found very interesting in the book was the degree to which human behavior was regulated by drugs prescribed and issued by the state. When we look at the amount of Ritalin being given to children in the U.S. for hyperactivity and attention deficit syndrome, it is interesting to speculate what kind of medication these young humans will be taking 20 years from now. I was fortunate to have seen the original Lucas student film version of THX1138 on TV. In the summer of 1971, PBS TV had a 1 hour special program narrated by Alan Alda of M*A*S*H fame, looking at the work of some 6 new up-and-coming directors (and how!). The last film shown was Lucas's THX11384EB. It w s so interesting I taped it on my little audio recorder, and I still have the reel to reel tape! Consumer video didn't exist back then. In the film, THX's full name is THX11384EB. Unlike the feature film he did later, the student film opens with THX's escape from the underground complex already underway. There's lots of running through underground passages, probably parking garages, tunnels, etc. There's no car chase at the end, but THX does finally climb up a ventilation shaft, and runs off into the sunset, literally to freedom. A voice tells us that his mate was YYO-7117. I always wondered if this student film version was available on video. I suppose maybe PBS TV still has the film? Keep up the good work.

Having watched the film again (for the umpteenth time) I'm amazed how much I'm overwhelmed by the entire "thing". It's not "dated" at all in my opinion. i'm not a "Stars Wars" fan. So I think "THX1138" is not only the best Lucas film. But as one of my "tr logy of Films", one of the best ever made. 9The other two being: Clockwork Orange and Zardoz. THX-1138 is definitely one of most innovative films I've seen. Its portrait of a dark futuristic 'technocracy' is no exagerration. The mall setting in THX is also used in the film GATTACA(another great Ayn Randian look at the future). THX can be found n VHS at some Borders Books stores or special ordered for $9.99 at any Blockbuster. I'd greatly appreciate any information on a DVD release of this film. LUCAS FILMS did an amazing job on the ALIEN DVD release. A local Miami DJ produced a dark techno tra k using the samples,"Work hard, increase production". Great site, keep up the good work!

The Steppenwolf also put out an album with the group on the front. The leader was holding a cop helmet with THX1138 on it. I saw the movie when it first came out. To this day I can see the scenes as they unfold in our society.... No color, No weak, No infirmed, everybody in line. i love this movie, note to people who havent seen it yet, you will be confused, bigtime. i had to watch it 5 times to get what the hell is going on. its like, most of the movie is some people sitting in what looks like a tv studio thing and talking over police blotter stuff then it switches to robert duvall walking around then some closeups of numbers counting and tons and tons of transistor talk in t e movie. it looks more like a david lynch film than lucas but i love it. go see it, its very easy to get. i think its better than star wars.

I have just spent over an hour reading through your guestbook and I must say I'm amazed. You must really have struck a nerve in society by creating this site. I have not yet personally seen the movie yet but plan to soon. As a Lucas fan I couldn't live wi hout! I never realized that he had made THX 1138 until I saw your site. I find his way of filming inspiring and can only hope that future directors follow his path.... I am a great Star Wars fan, not neccessarily because of the plot, but because of his te hnique (remember when Luke had a fight with his uncle and is watching the twin suns set?), he can capture emotions like few other directors can. Other movies that "pull" you in are Bladerunner, Schindler's list and The Matrix to name a few. I can only say keep up the good work and I'll return when I've seen the movie!

Notice that the credits roll backwards and that when scenes fade they turn white not black. Excellent!! Lucas was an excellent editor. The "t.v." screens used was the same effect used in stars wars. In a way star wars is a sequel to THX 1138.

Until recently, I always assumed American Graffiti was Georges first film, and then I read in a film encyclopedia a short passage about THX1138. At the time of the film's original release, I was living in Luton, England. The only place where such a film could ever be shown, was the local Library. It was only by mere happenstance my girlfriend,Elaine, saw the only advert for the showing. She was exactly, to the day, one year younger than I, and the only other person I knew with the same strong love, and need, for Sci-fi. We were awestruck by the visualization of this dread future. (I don't know if "visualization" is a real word, but, for me, it sums up my feelings at the time) At the end of the movie, I turned around to see the rest of the audience - all three of them. I was looking for some sign of understanding, a sharing of this moment. I remember, the expression of fear on one older man as he sat there transfixed, staring at the screen. As I passed him, I asked him if he enjoyed the film. He replied,"I'm not sure 'enjoyed' is the right word. It scared the dickins out of me". "Cheer Up", I said,"It won't happen in our life time". I remember he turned to look me straight in the eye. His face worn one of those expressions only experience can give. "Young man. Don't be so sure!". I can never forget, or describe, the quiet intensity with which he spoke. Elaine, was a very, very strong-willed, tough, seen-it-all-before, type person. But when he spoke, she fliched and gripped my arm. We were both startled and upset by what we saw. For a split second , we both saw the film's future in his face. In the years since, I have occasionally tried to describe the movie, to others. All to no avail. I consider THX 1138 to be one of a very rare breed; A true SciFi movie. It is a shame Star Wars didn't continue in this vein. I don't blame Lucas, after al , as you have stated, the movie only now is making money, based on the popularity of Star Wars. When I first saw the original Star Wars, I was disappointed. It was a space-cowboy-western. I was hoping for the same thought provoking style as THX 1138. I thank you for this opportunity to revisit the movie through your site. As you can tell, it brought back memories. Thanks, Mario

The graphics have problems and there are some misspellings. The content's pretty good and it's good to find a site dedicated to such a GREATLY under appreciated film. One thing about LUH. She's a 'natural born' and thus not concieved and incubated in t e same 'chemically ballanced' soup that the others were. This is why she can see through the chemical haze that others accept as normal. This is brought up in the trial scene in the film.

At the end of the film, the computerized voice announces to his mate, YYO-7117, that THX1138-4EB was terminated. Lucas does not appear to have ever used that code name (YYO-7117) again. I believe I have an audio tape of the film from that PBS program somewhere (reel to reel, imagine...). Has anyone seen this UCLA version of the film ever released on video? It really impressed me.

I read or saw an interview with Lucas once where he suggested that this movie was just the product of a young, naive mind. This upset me a little, because I've always seen this movie as a great artwork and a brilliant warning of a possible future for our species. I can't remember where I came across this interview, and he just made the one off-hand remark. Terrific page. Needs more pics plus sound clips and video clips. A few years ago I checked out the U.S.C cinema web site, (since then it has been dramaticaly changed) anyway back then it had a section dedicated to george lucas' student films including the student version of THX 1138. There were about 10 fantastic behind the scences pics of lucas directing his short plus other pics from his other short films and there were some sound clips as well. Recently I went back to that site and hey the pics are nowhere to be found. If you can hunt around for them and post them it would terrific. By the way sound designer Walter Murches sound design on the feature THX 1138 is absolutly fan-f***ing-tastic. Listen to how he creates mood and atmosphere by n t only listening to the foreground sound but the background sound as well, brilliant. Check out his other great sound designs in Lucas' American Gaffiti were he uses his technique of depth of sound, the equivilant of depth of focus used for photography, Coppolas The Conversation and the ganddaddy of them all Apocalypse Now. It been great if THX 1138 was rereleased on video mastered in THX. The irony.:)

kudos for your site on the single-most overlooked masterpiece of sci-fi cinema. It seems very interesting that in most interviews Lucas dismisses the film almost as an embarassment, yet he consistantly makes covert references to it in his other work. Mr. Lucas has a deep interest in how mythology reflects and influences culture. THX 1138 can be seen as less sci-fi than an analogy of our society. Though apparently outlandish, most of what happens in the world of THX is already happening in our society in ore subtle ways. Consider the rambling old man we see when 1138 is institutionalized. He says that he listened to old men when he first arrived (and they, no doubt did the same), the only people in the story who remember what it really means to be human are in a madhouse!

it was great to find a thx 1138 page out there that was a fan page and not some site trying to sell the video. a few notes of interest. if youve ever watched pinky and teh brain at the shows begining the brain has a large complex equation on the blackbo rd which ends in thx=1138. also nine inch nails sampled the sounds of the holoprogram thx watches where the robot cop is beatinga man. the sample appears at the begining of their "the downward spiral" album. and a band called chemlab sampled the "whats wrong" from the medicine ca inet for a song of theirs called "zenith" i think. actually the thx references are abundant if youve seent he movie you recognize them everywhere. The film itself is an extraordianary piece of work...highly cerebral. i think your page is an excellent devotion to a fine film. keep up the good work.

I can tell you a little about one of the misconceptions you mentioned on your site;the one being THX 1138 is NOT a stereo system. It's not a Lucas film but yes a tie.In Boogie Nights (Mark Whalburg's portrayal of porn king Dirk Diggler),a porn star has a day job (believe it or not) as a salesman in a music store(mid to late 70's)and hypes up the product to a customer introducing the latest and greatest stereo system money can buy.it's name of course the THX1138. It's too funny(if you catch it that is). Good work on your site.My first time checking it out,I'll be back though. I love this movie, being a political pessimist. I read 1984 when I was a teenager, and it was nice to see a spin on that story. There is one small problem with the info left, however. THX was by far not the first time the individual as a number was use in film. Metropolis, 1984 (50's version), to name only a couple, contain this idea. Too bad Lucas has been pumping out pulp sci fi ever since. The Holy Trilogy was great, but it was more fantasy than sci fi, and it wasn't much of a thought-provoker. eace and free will.

I have some questions about the movie I have seen it at least 20 times now, and I also saw the wide screen laser disc version. The laser disc was good but also dissapointing. The movie was filmed in 2.35:1 but the laser disc transfer shows it in 2.2:1. You still miss part of the sides of the ovie. Anybody know why? What is going on in the one sceen after THX and LUH have sex. THX opens the door to see all these faces stareing at him... then the scene in question...There is an auditorium full of people, Lights hanging from the ceiling. The people's heads turn back an forth in unison and you hear some sloshing squishing sound. What is that all about? What is the red shape thing that THX picks up and takes home and seems to flush into the garbage. I couldn't seem to access the interview with the cop Guy. Any Idea why? I also got Logans run in widescreen laser disc collector's edition. Well worth while. What else has Maggie McComme been in? She is very Beautiful. I love george lucas' use of negative space in the letterbox format. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. Did you notice the film "Gattaca" with eathan hawk had a couple of tributes to THX 1138 in its cinimaphotography. One of the opening scenes in gattaca they show the same 3 level atrium foyer that is shown in one of the opening scenes of THX. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the same tunnel in the 2 movies. The chase scene in THX and the scene in Gattaca where The guy and girl get stopped in the tunnel and I D checked. Check it out.. Please write me back scott

THX 1138 is the only George Lucas film i can enjoy. It is also his best. It is also one of the best SF fims out there: My list (in no particular order): -THX 1138 -2001: A Space Odyssey -AKIRA -Blade Runner -Metropolis -Brazil (there are a few more, but they don't come to mind right now) Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, A.E. VanVogt, Philip K. Dick. Who would think Ben Bova would get to write this one? Form the Babel archetype. Society is the death of the individual. And George Lucas died. Life is a choice: You either die out of hunger or out of boredom. George died of boredom. With his Coca-Cola, McDonald's sponsored, Kenner toys... he has made a "cultural" monopoly swaping kids creativity with marketing hunger, tr st me, I know a lot of "friends" that fell into the abyss of uncreativity because of SELL-OUTs like him. He inspired a generatioin? Well certaintly not MY genereation: all of my StarWars-adoring "friends" have shit for brains. I still haven't managed to find a copy of this movie in my small town, but I'm still looking. Curious note: I was watching 12 Angry Viewers on MTV, and they play a new video by (I think) Gang Starr. The video was a blatant rip-off/tribute (you never be ure which) of THX-1138. I haven't seen it and I could still tell. Anyway, at the end, the 12 angry viewers were discussing and one of them says (in a unknowing tone) "It's like Star Wars meets One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest." Ignorance of the work of G orge Lucas is always dissapointing. I am pleased to read that the Brain enjoyed it.

I've been a FAN of the work of George Lucas since first seeing the initial release of "THX-1138" (in San Francisco at a now-closed venue out on Ocean Avenue). I saw it on a "date" and then (subsequently) dragged friends to see it. I'd like to know how we can apply pressure to Lucasfilm and/or Time-Warner (?) to have the Lucas crew go back and give the film the full DVD treatment -- Dolby DIgital 5.1 channel sound, clean up the picture in the film to video transfer, find all the "ad ed bonus" materials -- background stuff. I'd buy it in a second! :)

Don't forget that Johnny Weismuller, Jr. (son of Tarzan) played one of the robot cops. Many years back, when I first saw the film, I shared an apartment with a clueless roommate. The bathroom was adjacent to my bedroom. Every time I'd hear him open the bathroom cabinet over the sink, I'd yell through the wall: "What's Wrong? Take two blu pills. Found this page on my first shot just fooling with YAHOO. Didn't really expect to find anything, especially putting in as little info. This is a long way from when my dad worked in a room with massive punch card computers doing inane caculus problems. THX 138 as amovie is an amaxing visual experience. It is not thr kind of film one can just throw on and watch as a srtaight shot. It is a beautiful thing when a completely finished visual item can still challenge you to think. Few other movie have had this ef ect, The Shining was one, Empire another. Afew more,but anyways... I saw THX for the first time when I as 8 or 9 when vcrs first became avaliable. I finally tracked down a copy of this movie and watched it for the first time. Thank you for creating this web site and especially for including a guest book. I noticed a number of visual and thematic elements in THX which were reused in Star Wars. The car and motorcycle chase in the tunnel felt and sounded a lot like Luke and the TIE fighters along the Death Star channel. The banality and ineptness of the police forces in THX was paralleled in some ways by the Storm Troopers and Death Star personnel. I find it highly ironic to see such a strongly anti technology / dehumanization story from Lucas at the beginning of his career. Some of the same themes certainly carry into Star Wars. Yet Star Wars also made technology exciting, just because of how it was made. It transformed the movie industry and ushered in an age in which human values in film-making are commonly subordinated to the addictive thrills of the machine.

I just reread the book . It's written by Ben Bova for the script by George Lucas. It is highly intertaining and includes subject matter that is not fully explained in the movie. Like THX's punishment is to be" consumed by the masses"which means to become n onwilling organ doner. Also LUH was distroyed after being raped by her jailers. Met the man himself since I completed many trouble tickets(Pacific Bell Telephone)@ the Lucasfilm compound and I asked him about a possible sequel or prequel to THX 1138. He sounds pretty embarassed about the whole film and that nothing will ever be redone on it ever. I told him I liked it allot and that I own a now rare panavision widesceen edition of it on laserdisc, but I don't think he's to happy about the whole film today. He's a perfectionist! PS- I searched my Pac Bell archives because i recognize in the film some of our switch centers and yes, filming was done in some of our mainframe billing and reroute long distance relay centers in Oakland / S.F.!!!

Wow, it's cool that someone actually wrote a THX-1138 FAQ. I wrote one of these back in 91-92 (When I first started on the Net). The origional is currently on a partially corrupted hard drive which is currently gathering dust in my desk drawer. I'll try t get the info of of there and send it to you. It includes a listing of THX sightings, and other possible speculations on the root of the name (Such as the Thomas Holbrum project). Your phone number theory seems the most logical though... Still don't have E-mail, and this is the first time I've used the web. I'm glad that the first time I used it I found your page. If you have any information as to where I could buy a copy of the student film or when Bravo is playing it again, please e-m il my girlfriend at this address. Also, if you own a laserdisk player, you can order THX-1138 from Colombia House for really cheap. I don't know if they have it on video.

I am so glas there a e other out there who love this movie almost as much as I do. One of greatest movies of all-time. The scenes between THX and LUH are are touching in the most painfully human of ways, and THX vomitting "in front of" OHM is a true reflection about what the HX 1138 is about!

inally I've found a THX page on the net! Keep it going. PS: when I'm in the subway during rush hour out here in New York City it feels like the escape scene in THX. George Lucas had something going with this film, I hope it ties into Star Wars.
