JUNGLE WORLDS
BY Steve and Scott
In the galaxy there are many diverse worlds to play on. My jungle world is base around the short story Devils Mauraders in the book Death Wing. The world is covered with a multi-layered forest. The first level is a deadly swamp that will rival any death world. The place where battles are fought is the upper level. Large spider like creatures spin a webbing in the trees that create a moss like canopy between the trees.
Planetary Features
There are very few types of terrain in the jungle canopy. The carpet moss is too weak to hold buildings without major support to the ground below. Rivers run below on the swampy surface level. The following are the only types of terrain allowed in the carpet moss level.
- Open Ground
- Trees
- Rough Ground
- Hills
- Open Ground
- Open ground is the carpet moss areas between the trees. It provides no cover nor any hinderance to movement. It is a very fragile eco-system and area effect weapons can tear holes through the carpet moss plunging models 100' to the surface below.
- Trees
- The tree tops extend through and support the carpet moss in small forest like clumps. These are considered difficult ground and moving through them reduces your movement by half. Models within one inch of the woods may fire out at enemy models. Models outside of the woods may fire at enemy models within 1" of the edge with a -1 to hit modifier. Since the trees support the carpet moss there is no chance that it will tear open in those areas.
- Rough Ground
- Some places the tree branches poke through the carpet moss creating rough ground. This is considered difficult terrain and models are able to hide in the various schrubs and branches. These also are safe from tears because they provide support to the carpet moss.
- Hills
- Hills are simply areas in the carpet moss that have been built up over time by the spinners. They are considered open terrain with no movement penalties but are vulnerable to tears in the carpet moss.
Carpet Moss Tears
- Troops
- The carpet moss can be torn open with heavy weapons that have a burst radius, The surface has an Armor Value of 15 and if it is penetrated the carpet moss will tear open the size of the burst radius. Model on top of the tear who survive the blast get an initiative save. They must roll under their initiative or plunge to the ground below.
There are a couple of exceptions these are:- Terminators
- Wraith Guard
- Orks in Mega Armor
- Squats in Exo Armor
- Carnifexes
These creatures get no initiative save.
- Vehicles
- The carpet moss is a fragile surface that is prone to tearing open when too much weight is on it. No wheeled or tracked vehicles are alowed upon the surface. Only skimmers and walker type vehicles can manuver with out tearing up the surface. When the carpet moss is torn they get no initiative save to dodge out of the tear, for they are too bulky and unmanuverable.
- Web Spinners
- The web spinners are efficient creatures and patch up the holes almost as fast as they are opened roll on the following table for each tear:
- 1. Carpet moss tears wider increase radius by 1"
- 2-3 Carpet Moss Remains Torn.
- 4-6 Tear is Repaired.
