The Games of Saberhaven Kraag vs. Morann
|
The force mage moves out into the Arena and engages his Force Cube during the introductions. Kraag runs forward with carrying a spear in each hand and his short swords at his side. He gets ready to throw his spear. The manpian fires one of his spears at the cube-clad force mage. The mage calmly reaches out for the spear and catches it in his hand like a child's ball. He drops it and starts levitating in the air. The manpian rushes forward with another spear. The floating Morann looks down at the Cube of Force and presses another face. Morann, hovering in the air sixty feet above the manpion's head, begins to utter arcane syllables and flex his fingers into unnatural positions. After a few brief seconds, he thrusts his right palm downwards toward his opponent, and with a crack of thunder, a blast of lightning fury smashes down upon the unfortunate gladiator. The lighning bolt strikes the Manpian with a sizzle. Kraag shakes his head a bit then moves out from under the mage, about 20 yards away. "You can't run far enough," says the monk-mage. "The power of thought and word reaches farther than your puny swords." Morann chants a new incantation and points a finger at the scuttling scorpion-man. A ball of flame speeds toward Kraag, exploding around him in a giant ball of fire. The crowd cheers for the fantastic magic show. The Manpian stands undaunted. He moves even further away, to 40 yards, seemlingly unsure what to do. "What's the matter, Kraag, have you run out of spears to throw?" taunts Morann. "Here, catch these." The floating wizard utters strange syllables, then points again at the gladiator. Three bright spheres fly forth from his extended finger, speeding unerringly to explode around the warrior. Taking the hit, the manpian backs away to the edge of the Arena, 120 yards away. With no comment this time, Morann stretches back his right arm, mutters something incomprehensible, and then hurls his open hand forward. A smoking bolt of liquid flies like an arrow at Kraag. Kragg is covered with the acid. "Is that the best you can do?" he calls. "A little acid?" "Perhaps the force missiles were more to your liking?" Morann returns. "Here, have another dose." Once again, the mage sends three globes of concussion at the manpion. The manpian laughs at the leviating mage as he summons the healing energy from his weapon and returns to full power. "This may take some thought," says Morann as he watches Kraag's wounds heal before his eyes. The mage stands, brow furrowed, in concentration. After a bit, Morann fiddles with his cube of force as he drifts slowly groundwards. Kraag moves forward and when the mage hits the ground, he throws his second spear. Morann steps to the side, catches the spear in midair, and sticks it in the dirt beside him. He summons a small black globe into his hands, waits until Kraag is only thirty feet away, and hurls the orb at the gladiator. The orb strikes with deadly accuracy and the manpian seems to pause, but shakes free of the effects and chages to the edge of the cube. Morann backs away to the rear of the cube to avoid the oncoming sword thrusts and concentrates the full force of his psionic power on the manpion. Weakened, the manpian moves around the cube, trying to thrust his swords into the elusive mage. Morann continues to circle slowly around the cube, keeping his distance from the gladiator. As he does so, he invokes mystic powers, and a shimmering ray of frost is emitted from his hands to surround Kraag. The manpian is engulfed in the cold blast but will to resist it and seems more weakened that ever before. He breathes heavy then concentrates and seem to make a full recovery. He smiles at the force mage and says, "Soon, you'll run out of spells and be left defenceless. Want to bet I can outlast you?" "What makes you think spells are my only defense?" retorts Morann. "My mind is stronger than your flesh shall ever be." Kraag breathes heavy and tries to regain his composure, but is visibly hurt. Hoping to finish the gladiator off before he can heal himself yet again, Morann summons a bolt of force to smash Kraag. As the directed pole of force jets forth from the mage's finger, the manpian falls to his keens and blacks out, a quarter hour after the fight began.
