    Pioneer IV 
    FIRST EARTH ESCAPE OF U.S. SPACECRAFT 
followed the launch of Pioneer IV on 
March 3, 1959.  It passed the moon at a 
distance of 60,000 km (37,300 mi.) and 
reached a tracking distance record of 
654,860 km (407,000 mi) before its 
batteries were depleted at launch plus 84
hours, 6 minutes.
