Tym Keeper was a by-product of my first major SF-story "The Adventures of
the USS Orion Betelgeuse" from 1994.
In this story, a half human, half alien character appears, named
V'lerian Tramit. When the crew was in deadly danger, the character's
father came to the rescue, the St'tlite T'Slet Mw'benga. He was
nicknamed 'Sledge Hammer', as his 'driving' skills matched those of a
certain TV character, but also because the St'tlite word for small,
'siledege', derivated into 'sledge'. THe St'tlite were, in this story, a
technologically highly evovled society with strong telepathic aibilities
an an enormous hunger for information.
As time passed by, the St'tlite civilization began to develope from a
sketch to a more detailed draft. From this draft emerged the St'tlite
language and later, the Tym Keeper.
I always was a fan of time tavel stories, starting with Time Tunel when
I was still young, and later Voyagers!, Quantum Leap, the Back to the
Future-movies and Dr Who. There were many more 'fathers' to Tym Keeper,
of course, but these influenced me most.
When I took part in the first roleplaying game I encountered on a
convention - Paranoia - I was fascinated by the idea of creating
something like it myself. Something that had to do with time travel.
Something unique. This way, the Tym Keeper went on their first voyage.
With the help of two friends (thanks on this way to Ashti and Stayka)
who taught me the basics of roleplaying and doublechecked the results,
and the first testplayers (thanks to Markus and Jens) who helped
straighten out the initial bugs in the system, the roleplaying game
quickly took form.
What you can see here is the result of ten years of testing, developing
and exploring. Feel free to play Time Keeper and download the rules,
character sheets and background information to join into the world of
time travellers, renegades and history. The copyright to the stuff (Tym
Keeper, St'tlite, Mykana and the background information as well as the
rules and character sheets) I created belongs to me. Any copying,
printing or distribution of the Tym Keeper roleplaying game, the
character sheets, etc. is not allowed, except for personal use to play
the game.
In the year 10250 B.C., according to Terra calendar, 5 colony vessels
started their journey from the St'tlite Homeworld TYGOQthAL to colonize
the planet TALEQK/ASEM III. The 5000 colonists never arrived at their
destination.
They, and their vessels, were brought into a space pocket in a far away
future, when they collided with a time barrier which frequently opened
to allow a one-way passage through time and space. During the transfer,
the ships were heavily damaged.
The colonists' leader V'Sh'Myykan St'thaalan, decided to land on on the
next inhabitable planet, which was found in a nearby star system. The
landing was a bit rough and cost many ships and injured a lot of people.
V'Sh'Myykan St'thaalan founded the first settlement on the planet, which
was later renamed 'Mykana' to honor him.
During the following 350000 years, the decendents of the colonists
developed a unique community. As time passed by, their scientists
discovered 'Crossbreeding'which enables Humanoids of a similar design,
but from different species to mix naturally, without the drawbacks that
usually come with such an interspecies reproduction.
Another discovery made it possible to prolonge the average lifespan to over 5000 years.
When a Mykanian reaches the (bodily) age of 18 years, a process of
constant cell regeneration and reparation is triggered, which causes the
body to age very slow. At a bodily age of 50 years, this process ends
and the Mykanians age normally.
But the most amazing invention the Mykanian scientists made was time
travel. And as living close to a time distortion had made some of the
Mykanians sensitive to the 'Web of Time', they were chosen to take over
a great responsibility: They became the first Tym Keeper, to watch over
history during the experiments and the early time jumps.
In later generations, the job descibtion of the Tym Keeper became to ensure that the continuity of the Tymline is maintained. A major part of their work includes keeping an eye on time travellers from other planets and times, but also to watch over critical moments in history to make sure everything ends the way it's supposed to happen. On occasions, this can be very unpleasent, especially if they have a catastrophy, or war and murder to watch over. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often, unless someone has tried to temper with history and the ripples in the Tymline caused by this actions need to be straightened out.
There are 15250 Tym Kepper; about the half of them is on active duty.
The rest monitors the time travel activities from TYMIR, the Tym
Keepers' continent, on which they, their familes, and the companions
with their familes, live and work.
A small number of individuals, different from the rest of the Mykanian
population, had stable genes for time sensivity. Their children and
later generations descending from them are called 'Tyms'. They posses
the strongest time sensivity among the Mykanians. From 1793 Tyms, 1321
have joined the Tym Keeper. They also live on TYMIR, which is
exclusively for Tym Service personell and their familes.
TYMIR is sealed off from the rest of the Mykanian continents to make
sure that no one steals the technology or the time travel machines.
The Tymline the Tym Keeper protect is the history of Mykana. Even a minor damage can have catastrophic results - in the worst case, the Mykanian society ceases to exist. And as everything in the Universe is connected somehow, this means that the Tym Keeper can show up at any time, in any place, even in any Universe if the job requires it.
