Nick slid the door to the loft open with an eagerness,
that still surprised him. Knowing Natalie was waiting for
him made him all the more eager. He was frozen in his
tracks by the sight that greeted him.
"Hello Nicholas..." LaCroix smiled evilly as Nick
frantically looked around for Natalie. "Did you really think I
was gone forever?"
"What did you do with Natalie?" Nick demanded,
"where is she?"
"Right here," LaCroix gloated as he stepped to one
side to reveal Natalie's lifeless body.
"NO!" Nick launched himself at LaCroix.
With contemptuous ease, LaCroix twisted Nick
around and held him in place.
"Now you learn the price of Mortality, Nicholas."
LaCroix growled in his ear. "Now you belong to me again."
"NO!!!" Nick sat up screaming as he felt LaCroix's
fangs begin to pierce his neck.

No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here , nothing can harm you-
my words will warm and calm you.

Natalie was awake in an instant. Wrapping her arms
around Nick, she held him as the fear induced tremors
gradually faded. "It's OK Nick. I'm here... It was just a
nightmare."
"Mommy?" A small tired voice came from the
doorway to their bedroom.
"It's alright Fleur. Daddy just had a bad dream."
Natalie said to the 3 year old girl standing there.
"OK," The young girl smiled. "Tuck me in?"
        "I'll be right there, Pumpkin."

Let me be you freedom,
let daylight dry your tears.
I'm here, with you, beside you,
to guard you and to guide you...

Say you love me,
every waking moment,
turn my head with talk of summertime...

Say you need me with you,
now and always...
promise me that all you say is true-
that's all I ask of you.

Natalie came back to find Nick sitting on the edge of
the bed. He still looked a bit devastated and as Natalie
stepped closer, he pulled her into a tight embrace.
"I'm here Nick. No one's going to take me from
you."
        "I love you Nat."
"I love you too, Nick," Natalie gently stroked his
hair until he drifted off to sleep.

Let me be your shelter,
let me be your light,
You're safe: No one will find you-
your fears are far behind you...

The next morning Nick came down to breakfast late.
"Sorry about last night." He apologized as Nat laid
out a plate of bacon and eggs.
"I'm used to it," Natalie replied as Nick started
eating. "Once a year for the last 4 years, you've had the same
nightmare. Almost like clockwork."
"On the anniversary of the night..." Nick's voice
trailed off as he remembered what had happened.

All I want is freedom,
A world with no more night...
and you, always beside me...
to hold me and to hide me...

        Nick's Loft 1996

Natalie entered the loft with a jubilant expression on
her face. "Nick I think I've got it."
"A cure?" Nick's voice was wary. He'd been
disappointed too many times before to work up much
enthusiasm this time.
"I think so," Natalie smiled. "It's a variant strain of
the Virus that almost decimated the vampire community a
couple of months ago. I've managed to tweak it a bit so that
it active seeks out and destroys the vampiric element in your
cells without damaging the integrity of the cells proper."
"And you think it will work?"
"I've tested it in vitro and no matter how much of
your blood I use. The smallest addition of the new virus
causes an almost instantaneous transformation."

Then say you'll share with me one love,
one lifetime...
let me lead you from your solitude...

Now Nick started to get excited. "When can we try
it?"
Natalie hesitated, "Nick, I don't know what this will
do inside your body. It could cure you or it could kill you."
"I'm willing to take the risk."
"Well I'm not!" Natalie almost shouted. "I don't
want to lose the man I lo.." her voice trailed off as she
realized what she had just revealed.
"I love you too, Nat." Nick smiled, "But if we're ever
going to have a life together, I need to be mortal. For that I'll
risk anything."
"Indeed." The voice that came from behind them
caused Natalie's blood to run cold. "And how do you expect
to have a life together with a dead woman?"
Nick interposed himself between Natalie and his
master. "Stay out of this, LaCroix."
"And let you become mortal," LaCroix sneered, "I'd
sooner see you both dead."
Nick launched himself at LaCroix with a roar. Soon
the two vampires had trashed the Loft in their struggle.
LaCroix was obviously stronger but desperation gave Nick a
strength to match his.
LaCroix threw Nick across the room where he
landed on the table next to the sofa, shattering it. As Nick
struggled to his feet, LaCroix grabbed him by the throat and
shoved him against the wall.
        "Any last words?" LaCroix asked.
Nick's face reflected an almost infinite sadness, "I'm
sorry." He stated flatly.
"About what?" LaCroix asked, then his anger turned
to shock as he looked down between their bodies. Nick had
managed to grab Joan of Arc's cross from ruins of the table.
It was now protruding from LaCroix's chest.
LaCroix looked up again into Nick's eyes. "How
appropriate," he whispered, before sinking to the ground.

Say you need me with you here,
beside you...
anywhere you go, let me go too-
that's all I ask of you.

"There was nothing you could have done, Nick."
Natalie's voice brought him back to the present. "He would
never have let you become mortal."
"I know," Nick smiled, "but if it hadn't been for me,
you could have stayed at your old job, your old home."
"And done what?" Natalie asked, "If it hadn't been
for you, I wouldn't have a home, or our daughter. Anywhere
you are that's home."
"Have I told you lately how grateful I am you entered
my life?"
"Yes, but I'm never going to get tired of hearing it."
"I love you, Nat. Thank you, for your love, for our
daughter, for my second chance at living."

Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime...
say the word and I will follow you...
Share each day with me, each night, each morning...
Say you love me...
You know I do...

Love me-
That's all I ask of you...

The end.

Notes: OK for anyone that actually read my other song story
"Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again." This is one of
the two other songs that I was talking about from the
"Phantom of the Opera" Soundtrack. I don't know whether
I'll ever get around to writing the third one. "Music of the
Night" or not. But I hope you like this one.

The End
