Just a little something
by Eric McCann
Nat sat there, staring at the TV halfheartedly, flicking through the
channels. Sydney looked up occasionally, and then, seeing his human wasn't
really doing anything interesting, would stretch and go back to sleep.
She yawned lazily, and went back to watching the nothing that was on the TV.
She woke suddenly, and looked up into Nick's face. "Don't DO that!" He
grinned down at her. "Sorry. You just looked so... peaceful laying there,
I didn't want to break the moment."
She smiled. "Peaceful, huh. And now you get to see my just-woke-up look."
He leaned down and kissed her. "It's not so bad."
"Mmmmm. That was nice." She felt something on her stomach, and looked
down to see a little box. "What's this?"
"Just a little something." He looked in her eyes. "Open it."
She tore away the wrapping... she always loved presents. She unpacked all
the paper, to find a stuffed cat.... with plastic vampire teeth. She broke
out laughing, then noticed it was carrying another little box. She looked
up at nick, who was just sitting there, grinning. "Well, open it up..."
She plucked the box out from between its stuffed paws, and opened it.
Inside was a cameo, containing a picture of her and Nick at the new years
party, dancing. "Nick..."
He smiled back at her.
"What's the occasion?"
"No occasion. Just another night. But, it's another night with you in my
life... and that's another special night to me."
