"Nat!" Nick opened the elevator door to see her asleep on his couch.
The radio was blaring. How long had she been here, waiting for him?
God, she looked so beautiful. He took a blanket from upstairs, and
wrapped her snugly in it. She stirred slightly, but didn't wake from her
state of tranquility. He sat on the opposite end of the couch, watching
her as she slept; each whispering of a breath she took, her creamy skin,
those curls-how he loved those curls. Her neck-he could trace out the
veins. Every part of her fascinated him.
A wave of guilt swept over Nick. He had betrayed her, again. Given
into the beast. Given into Janette...
"Nicola, stay with me..." she had whispered. He had denied her the
first time.
"Alright. I need you tonight," he had answered huskily. But back at
the Raven, in the middle of their passionate kiss, he had broken away.
"What's wrong? You've never...had any doubts about my.. abilities before."
"Janette, I can't."
She had put her arms around him, leaned her head on his shoulder,
and he looked to bury his head in her...auburn curls?
"No...I can't," he repeated.
She had stepped back, with surprise, anger, and hurt written all over
her face. "Then go, Nicola. Go back to her."
"Who?"
"Natalie. It is she you want, isn't it?"
"Janette..."
"Don't. I saw it. In your blood. You've gotten what you needed
from me. Now go."
He had taken her hand, brushed it gently with his lips. "I'm sorry.
I do care about you. Please know that."
"I do. But it has been over between us for some time now, hasn't it?
I lost you when I left you all those years ago." She had spoken these
words sorrowfully, longingly. Janette avoided his eyes. "Nicola,
time doesn't stand still. Even for our kind. Go."
He had released her hand and had headed towards the club's exit.
He looked back at Janette one more time, with regret for having hurt her.
"Nick? Is that you?" Natalie murmered.
"It's me." He answered softly. "How long have you been here?"
"Don't know...waited...watched TV...feel asleep," she mumbled drowsily.
"Oh. I'm sorry."
"So tired..."
"I know Nat. Sleep."
He picked her up, blanket and all, and ascended up the stairs.
Sighing, she put her arms tightly around his neck and leaned her head
into his chest, sleeping.
Gently, Nick placed her on his bed and watched her doze off blissfully.
He kissed her lightly on the cheek, letting her breath touch upon his ice
cold face. Something struck him-a warmth that he had never known
before. She was his Natalie. And from now on, he would be hers.
Nick returned downstairs, and the soft sweet melody of the tune played
in his ears. He had forgotten to shut the radio.
In the instant that you love someone
In the second that the hammer hits
Reality runs up your spine
And the pieces finally fit
And all I ever needed was the One
Like freedom feels where wild horses run
When stars collide, like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I ever needed
Baby you're the one
Nick dimmed the lights, and laid his head upon the couch, where
Natalie had been sleeping. He could still smell her, as sweet as a
Spring day, or what he remembered of it. And it somehow soothed
him to know that she was here, sleeping soundly upstairs.
And all I ever needed was the One
Like freedom feels where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You’re all I ever needed
ohh Baby, you’re the one
No, he knew he would never be going back to Janette for THAT again.
Natalie. She was all he needed. All he wanted. All he loved.
She was the One for him.
"One day, I'll tell her...I will tell her." Nick whispered to himself,
drifting
off to a contented sleep of his own.
