Trials and tribulations of homepage building

I finally worked up the nerve and got me a home page on Dec. 6, 1996, AND IT HAS TAKEN OVER MY LIFE.
Well this has been fun, still is for that matter. But in the last month I've done nothing but eat, sleep, work on my homepage, and work (work is good, makes my computer payments) I started this page a few weeks ago, around the beginning of December, and when I started I didn't know a thing about HTML, but the idea of an easy to use editor, no HTML, sucked me in. And this is true, the basic editor here is very easy to use. But then you want more, and more, and MORE. I was thrilled the first time I linked a word inside text!
Well the first place I went to for help was geocities very own referral Athens 2090. And that's a good place to get started , it kind of holds your hand and walks you thru some of the basics of html. And of course that site recommends others, of which I found Hagans the most useful because it gave examples.
A word of caution, things in HTML land are not equal for all browsers. I had tried the blink command code out, hadn't closed it properly, and I had two whole paragraphs blinking, and my browser didn't see it. Finally a friend told me that the blinking was a little distracting and I didn't know what he was talking about. And when I put in background sound, you could hear it with one browser, not the other. I had to dig up the alternate command for the OTHER browser to hear the music. If anyone knows of a source that lists commands and couterpart or equal commands for the OTHER browser please let me know.
A helpful hint: Learn to View Source. If you see a layout you like, or want to know how someone did something, VIEW SOURCE. I recommend going to word wrap also, puts everything together so you can read it easily. Also learn COPY and Paste, and set up a practice page to try out new tricks.
This just in! Window's Error Code Update.

I can't help myself, here's the 12 step recovery program for Windows95.

The following are sources I've found to help in web page building.

Backgrounds are out there, everywhere!

Backgrounds are of course of a very personal nature, and you want to find one that enhances the mood of your page and pick text colors that will be easy to read against it. To find more background pages than you could check out in a month, simply do a search, key word backgrounds. Following are a couple of my favorites.

WEB GALLERY Must check this one out, one stop shopping.

Galadriel's Backgrounds and Bars

David Elliott's Land of the Squishy Some of the most beautiful, STRANGE, surrealistic backgrounds I've seen

Awesome Backgrounds and Colors

Mac Daddy's Backgound Sampler

Background Colors Useful for solid backgrounds or configuring your text colors.

RGB Hex Triplet Color Chart Huge color chart.

Animated gifs, icons and bars

Animated Gifs

Danny's Little Collection of Animated Gifs (5 star site)

The Icon Depot Includes bars, buttons and balls, some animations.

Cat's Art Collection Backgrounds, bars, banners, holday clip art, some really cute and different graphics.

The Sounds of Music

bgsound src="./midinameofyourchoice.mid"

IE command for background sound(enclose in brackets)<>

I like background music when I visit a page, seems to add just the right touch of atmosphere. One of my favorite web sites is the Ghost House, and I really got a chuckle listening to his "Ghost Busters" theme playing in the background. So for those of you that want sound here are some places to find midi files to download.

Midi File Central The ULITIMATE Midi file site (member of the Midi Ring)

The Bluebird of Midis I like this place!

Mike Peterson's Midi Page

The Ultimate TV & Movie Midi Page Well that kind of says it all.

The Classical Midi Archives

The Midi Farm

TheDJ

Yes folks, live (or archived) concerts on the web

Listen to some tunes while you surf!

The Chat House

The Palace-it takes chat to a whole other dimension. Warning Highly Addictive

More to follow, work is callingggggggg

P.S. If you enjoyed your visit, or even if you didn't, please sign the dragon roster (cute, huh?) on the home page. I really enjoy hearing what people think of all this.
