"The Two Doctors"

(Strange Tales Part 1)

by Eric J. Moreels

It had been another long day for Cecilia Reyes at her newly reopened clinic. Since deciding to strike out on her own and start practising medicine again, she'd had more work than she knew what to do with. She was glad, though, that her clinic in Salem Center was a success, and thankful even more that her being a mutant had only resulted in Wolverine visiting her late one night.

(it happened in issue #1 of the Cecilia Reyes Limited Series - Eric)

Her luck was about to change, however, for as she finished for the night and opened the front door to her clinic, the sight she was greeted with made her stagger back in alarm.

"I need yer help, lady..." said the hulking figure at her clinic door.

After regaining her composure, she replied "And what makes you think I'd want to help the likes of you, Juggernaut?"

"Look lady, I don't want no trouble. I just need to get myself... patched up a bit..." Cain said.

"Patched up?"

Cecilia looked closer, and saw the wounds that the Juggernaut had.

"Not so unstoppable anymore, huh?" Cecilia baited, then she sighed, "Oh, come on then - head around to the garage and I'll meet you there - no way you're comin' into my clinic the size you are!"

Cain shrugged and headed around the corner of the clinic building to the garage. Cain managed to stoop underneath the roller doors and saw Cecilia waiting for him there, medical kit in hand. He sat Black Tom down gently in a corner and turned to face the mutant doctor.

"Your friend... want me to help him too?"

"Thanks, but a normal doc can't help him..."

Cecilia noticed that Tom had no obvious external injuries, and so took the Juggernaut on his word.

"Park yourself on the ground here mister, whilst I fix these wounds up."

"One thing you should know, doc," said Cain as he obeyed Cecilia and sat, "I got a forcefield which I can't turn off..."

"Like I don't know what that's like..." Cecilia muttered. "Let's get rid of that armour first shall we?"

"Sure, you're the doc..." and with that, Cain concentrated, and his mystical armour was replaced by more conventional civilian clothes.

Cecilia blinked, but then shrugged it off - she'd seen stranger things during her short time with the X-Men.

"Now let's take a look at these wounds.."

Cecilia performed her initial examination of the Juggernaut, treating him as just any other patient. Her dedication to the Hippocratic Oath prevented her from turning away anyone in need of medical aid, even if it was the Juggernaut. She remembered him from the Super-Villain casualty chart they used to run at her old hospital, Our Mother of Mercy. The Juggernaut topped the list every month for causing the most injuries. She considered it ironic that she was now treating the man responsible for causing her so much anguish in the past.

"You've got some pretty nasty wounds there, Mister..."

"Marko, call me Mister Marko..."

"...Mister Marko. I've just got to work out how to get past this forcefield of yours..."

Cecilia tried using a bandage on Cain's wounded shoulder, but she couldn't penetrate his forcefield.

"Time to try something new..." she muttered, and then began concentrating hard. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead as her psio-plasmic forcefield began to extend over the back of her hand. Still concentrating, she extended her hand towards the Juggernaut's forcefield.

"You're gonna have to work with me here Mister Marko," Cecilia grunted, "try and somehow retract your field to allow my field some leverage so I can get in there and clean these wounds!"

Cain began concentrating as well, and between the two of them Cecilia managed to get past Cain's field and work on treating his injuries. It was slow going, and required an enormous amount of concentration on both their parts, but eventually Cecilia triumphed, and the Juggernaut's wounds were all patched up.

"Thanks doc," said Cain as he stood up, towering over the petite doctor.

"Just don't send any more injuries or casualties my way fella," replied Cecilia, "and we'll call it even..."

Cain simply nodded, and walked out of the garage, ducking once more under the roller doors on his way out. Cecilia watched him leave, and pondered about whether she'd just seen a reformed villain, or just someone wanting a quick fix so they could go cause more mayhem...

Cain had walked the entire way from Cecilia Reyes' clinic in Salem Center to the weathered, old two-story brownstone in Greenwich Village, before which he now stood. There was only one person he knew of that could help Tom now, and he has been the inhabitant of this brownstone for many years now. Cain, still cradling Tom in his massive arms, approached the front door and rapped loudly with the brass knocker.

A short Asian man answered the door, stared up at the Juggernaut, and simply asked "Yes?"

"I need to see the doc, it's urgent!" Cain blurted out.

"The master has been expecting you, Mister Marko. Please come in..."

Cain just managed to squeeze through the doorway into the rustic building. The manservant, who introduced himself to Cain as Wong, ushered the Juggernaut through an archway and into a small waiting room whilst he went to fetch his master.

Cain gingerly placed Tom onto a velvet-lined couch as he stood and waited.

"I was expecting you sooner, Cain Marko," came a voice from the archway. The Juggernaut turned and saw the man he had come to see - Earth's resident Sorceror Supreme, Doctor Strange.

"Well I did have to walk from Salem Center..." replied Cain.

"Yes, I sensed your presence long before you visited the good mutant physician." Doctor Stephen Strange headed towards the couch where Black Tom lay.

Strange closed his eyes, and summoned the power of Agamotto. The Eye of Agamotto that Strange uses to clasp his cape opened, and bathed Black Tom in pure white light. Almost as soon as the light touched Tom's body, an inky black darkness surged from his prostrate body to envelop the light. Strange cried out and doubled over in agony - the eye closed and the darkness dissipated.

"Strange!" the Juggernaut called out, "What the...?!"

Strange raised a hand to indicate to Cain that he was alright. Slowly rising to his feet, Strange shook his head as his mind processed what the Eye of Agamotto had revealed to him about Black Tom's condition.

"Well, that was unexpected," Strange commented.

"What's the verdict, doc?"

"It's good that you came to me for help, for thanks to the all-seeing Eye of Agamotto, I now know the source of your friend's mystical affliction, and I can also take you there..."

"Well what're we standin' around jawin' for doc? Let's go!"

"Don't be so hasty my friend, for where it is we must go won't be to your liking... for, you've been there before..."

"So? Just point me in the direction of what needs smashin' doc, and let me do the rest!" boasted Cain.

"This is no time for idle boasting my friend, for you see, you must return to the Cyttorak dimension!"

(the Juggernaut was last there in X-Men Unlimited #12 - Eric)

At hearing that, the Juggernaut's eyes grew wide and his jaw dropped...

In Juggernaut #5: The Juggernaut, aided by Doctor Strange, returns to the Cyttorak dimension - and finds the source of the magical alterations to his friend Black Tom! But the source will be something that not even the Juggernaut might be able to defeat alone!
