Divine Intervention

"Hey kid, wake up!" a voice with slight New York accent quickly arose
Mulder from his slumber. His eyes focused on a man in his apartment sitting
calmly on his desk chair. Mulder quickly reached for his gun on the lamp
stand and pointed it at the man steadily.
"What the hell are you doing in my apartment?" Mulder asked in a tone
heavy from sleep.
"Now calm don't kid, just calm down. Put the gun down, I ain't gonna
hurt ya. I just want to talk with ya, that's all," the man said soothingly.
He held up his hands to show Mulder that he was only armed with his
unlighted cigar.
"That's nice. Who the hell are you?" Mulder question, not yet yielding
to the man's presence.
The man rolled his eyes in the dark and mumble something, then
addressed Mulder, "I'm your great uncle Louie. Now will you put the damn gun
down, cuz it won't do no good anyways."
"I didn't know I had a great uncle named Louie," Mulder replied,
relentlessly holding onto the gun.
"Well, there's a lot of stuff you don't know kid. Get used to it. Now
I'm just going to reach over and turn on this here light cuz I can't see a
damn thing in the dark." The lamp gave off a slight glow that filled the
room with a dreamlike air.
Mulder studied the older man. He noticed there was a slight resemblance
to his grandfather. Mulder put the gun down on the coffee table and
addressed the man, "So if you're my great uncle and I'd never heard of you,
then you must be dead. So either I'm dreaming or you're a …"
"Ghost? Naw, I'm not a ghost. Well wait, maybe I am. But that's beside
the point. Actually, since I was known as the black sheep of the family,
they made me your guardian angel and let me tell you, that ain't no piece of
cake," he explained.
"Aren't angels supposed to have halos and wings and all that?" Mulder
pressed, still wary of the whole situation.
"Yeah well, you try wearing a ring of light above your head and let's
see if it don't annoy you in about three seconds. But damn it, I didn't come
here to talk about me. I came to talk about your partner," Uncle Louie said,
getting to the point.
"What about Scully?" he asked, becoming instantly apprehensive.
"I just got one question for ya kid, are you stupid or something?"
Uncle Louie replied leaning forward in his chair.
     "What?" Mulder exclaimed, completely confused.
"Let me tell you, I was just like you when I was young. Headstrong,
determined, relentless, and alone. There was this one girl, Susie, aw she
was a pretty one I tell ya. A spice rack fit for a king, I swear. And a body
like a goddess from one of them ancient places, ya know? I spent everyday
with that girl. We worked together, I was the doc and she was my nurse. Man
I loved her. Loved her right up until the day she said 'I do' to that damn
banker from Jersey. Loved her more everyday after that. Turns out she loved
me too and just settled for that other guy cuz I never said nothin'. You
hearin' me here kid? I never said nothin'. So I ended up alone my whole
life. Well sure there were other girls, but I never loved them like I did
Susie. So I decided to come down here and have a little chat with you before
your life becomes mine," he ended the story by staring intently at Mulder.
"But I can't say anything," Mulder replied.
"And why the hell not?" Uncle Louie pressed.
"Well, because we work together. It would ruin our friendship and it
would get weird. That and I'm not sure she feels the same way," he
explained, his voice drifting off as he stared into space.
"God kid, you really are dense. She loves you. Oh let me tell you, she
loves you so much she doesn't know what to do with it so she just keeps it
all inside. But boy you should see the way she looks at you. Well, hell, you
should see the way you look at her for crying out loud. I mean, she's always
savin' your neck when she don't have to, she freaks out every time something
happens to you, she cried in that meeting last year when you made her lie
about your death…" he told Mulder.
     "She did?" Mulder interrupted.
"Yeah she did, and that ain't been the only time she has either. Now
believe me when I tell ya that she loves ya. But she doesn't wanna say
nothin' cuz she ain't sure about you and your feelings for her. Now you love
her don't ya?" he informed Mulder.
     Mulder hung his head, "Yeah."
"Ok then what's the problem? That geeky weatherman was right, I've seen
the way you gaze at her. So what is it? Do you think you're not in love with
her?" Uncle Louie asked.
"Maybe. I just don't know what it feels like. Real love you know? I
didn't get it from my parents and I didn't get it from any of the other
women. It was always just a little more than that friendship love. I thought
I was in love with them, but I don't know now. I don't know if I'm in love
with Scully or not," Mulder explained.
"Well if ya don't feel quite right when she's not around and ya get
this ping in your chest when she might or might not be in danger and your
heart aches every time you touch her, then I'd say you were in love with
her," Uncle Louie said.
Mulder lifted his head in realization. "Then what do I do now?"
Uncle Louie smiled, "You gotta run over there right now and profess
your love for her. It can't wait. Planning will ruin the moment. Be
spontaneous kid. Just let your heart be your guide."
Mulder nodded and suddenly got up, put on his jeans and jacket, grabbed
his keys and headed for the door. He quickly turned and said, "Hey thanks…"
But he quickly found himself alone in his apartment. He just shook his head
and hurried out the door.

**********************************************************************

Scully stirred as she heard a knocking at her door. At first she
thought it was part of her dream, but as she slipped into consciousness, she
realized the knocking was coming from the front door. Only one person would
be knocking on her door in the dead of the night. Mulder.
She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the clock on the nightstand. She
shook her head as she put on her robe and headed for the door. As an after
thought, she reached into her dresser drawer for her breath spray just in
case.
Not bothering with lights, she opened the door and without glancing up
at Mulder she said, "What are you doing here, Mul…"
Before she was allowed to finish her sentence, Mulder grabbed her arm,
pulled her towards him and kissed her passionately. Scully instantly melted
into the kiss, forgetting exactly where she was. After the initial shock
wore off, she regained her senses and quickly broke away. She gave Mulder a
little shove and exclaimed, "Mulder, what the hell are you doing, are you
drunk?" She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and stared at him with
a shocked expression.
"No, I'm not drunk. I just couldn't stop myself from coming over here.
I had to see you," Mulder explained weakly.
"Well I suggest you leave now," Scully told him firmly and she turned
and walked away from him in the dark.
"I can't until I tell you," Mulder paused to take a deep breath. "I'm
in love with you."
Scully stopped in her tracks. The confusion of this whole situation
overwhelmed her. She had no idea how to handle it. "You're delirious Mulder,
go home."
"No I'm not. And I'm not leaving until I hear you say it too." Mulder
said firmly, shutting her front door.
Scully's apartment was suddenly illuminated . Scully stood next to the
light switch with her hands on her hips and exclaimed, "What?"
"I know that I love you. And I know that you love me. Everyone else
could see it but you and me. Well I've seen it and now I can't go back. I
know you love me. I know that you cried when I made you lie about my
suicide. Now I realize how much I've hurt you. God Scully, I never meant to
I swear. I never wanted that. I know I'm self centered and I know I'm an
asshole and I know that I've put you through hell. But I could never let you
go. Every thing I said last year in my hallway I meant. I can't live
without you. I need you. I need you more than I've needed anyone in my whole
life and it scares the hell out of me. But here I am, putting everything on
the line. I've looked for the answers every possible place you can imagine,
but I realized the true answer has been right beside me for six years. Now
I've seen it, why can't you?" Mulder confessed.
Scully struggled to find the right words. The man she had loved since
she first entered his office had just told her he feels the same way and
nothing intelligible entered her might. She was completely numb from shock.
She took a deep breath and looked into his shining eyes, "I have seen it."
Mulder smiled and took a step forward, "Then say it. Just say it, but
only if you mean it. Only if it's real."
Her heart screamed inside her chest to let it all out. She was torn.
This was just all happening too fast. Everything she had been waiting for
had come down to her voice and three little words. She stood there, ten feet
away from him, looking into his eyes, scared to death. Once she said it,
there was no going back. Everything would change. Fantasy to reality. Heaven
on earth. True love revealed. But could she handle it? But did that actually
matter?
"I love you," she said softly.
Mulder's heart raced as the woman in front of him what he always wanted
to here from her. "Say it again."
This time she smiled, "I love you."
Mulder held out his hand and she gradually moved closer and took it. He
slowly pulled her closer to him and wrapped his arms around her. She let
herself be taken in by his warmth and closed her eyes as she listed to his
heart beat within his chest.
She pulled back a little to look into his eyes and asked, "What made
you come here?"
He smiled and as he pulled her in for their first real kiss he replied,
"A little divine intervention."

**********************************************************************

"'A little divine intervention.' Where does he get this stuff?" Louie
asked watching the scene unfold.
"Don't give him such a hard time. Evidently it runs in the family," the
woman sitting next to him replied.
"And just what is that supposed to mean miss Susie 'Oh I'm the best
guardian angel in the whole universe'?" Louie retorted.
"Oh come on Louis. If I can handle what you give me then I understand
why my niece can handle your nephew. We Scully women have stamina," she
replied with a smile.
"Yeah, I bet you do," Louie replied.
"Well, at least he's better at it than you are," she shot back.
"Hey, wait a minute What the hell does that mean?" Louie exclaimed.
"Nothing, just kiss me you old coot!" Susie said playfully.
