The Cat Came Back

By Paul Cwick

It was a Friday afternoon and Greg was returning home from work. He walked in the front door of his apartment, and immediately stopped dead in his tracks. He recognized a peculiar aroma in the air. Recalling the last time he smelled it, he reflexively tensed up: what was it doing in his apartment? Instantly, he feared the worst. He stepped inside and closed the door. "Cat? Cat? Are you in here? I know you are, I can smell that herb stuff of yours." He stood perfectly still, listening... He just KNEW she was around, he could sense it…

Suddenly, he was thrown back against the wall by an unseen force, his arms pinned at his sides, and an unseen mouth planted a big, wet kiss on him.

"SURPRISE! Welcome home, little boy-toy! I’ve missed you!" It was, of course, Cat (now invisible) who had pounced on him.

"Jeez, Cat, you scared the hell out of me! Don’t DO that!"

She released her embrace, and Greg started to relax…a little. "You weren’t expecting that, were you?" she said. Though he couldn’t see it, Greg sensed that she was smiling.

"No kidding! I wasn’t expecting you at all!" Greg looked around him, trying to judge where Cat was from the sound of her voice. "Where are you?" he asked.

"That’s for me to know and you to guess." Cat responded, in the same ‘smiling’ voice.

"Anyway, what are you doing here? How the hell did you get in? You don’t have a key."

"I do now. I borrowed yours once, when you weren’t looking, and I made a copy." She paused, "Actually, you WERE looking, you just didn’t see anything!" she said with a giggle.

"When did you do that?"

"Oh, quite a while ago. I’ve actually been here several times, only you didn’t know it. It was really very interesting to watch you go about your business when you didn’t know you were being watched. VERY interesting."

A shiver ran down Greg’s back, and he was about to object to this, but then reconsidered. Besides, a new question occurred to him. "Why are you still doing this invisibility thing?" he asked. "I thought you said I ‘passed’ your little ‘test’ or whatever."

"I know, but I just can’t help myself. I just love toying with you when you’re so vulnerable." She kissed him again and he flinched from the unexpected contact. Cat then took Greg’s hand, leading him further into the apartment. "Anyway, come on, I’ve got a few little surprises planned for you—" At this, Greg stiffened. "--a whole weekend of fun and games ahead of us."

"Fun and games?"

"Yeah. You know, ‘fun’ for me, playing ‘games’ on you." Cat laughed again. Greg didn’t. Cat noticed this.

"What’s the matter?" she said, "If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you weren’t glad to see me."

"Well, I WOULD be, but I CAN’T see you, that’s the point."

"Oh. Well, if that’s all it is, we can take care of that right away. Have a seat and I’ll be right back." Greg didn’t budge, so Cat gave him a shove and pushed him backward onto the couch. "I said, ‘Sit down!!’ I’ll be right back."

The sudden firmness of her tone of voice startled Greg as much as the unexpected shove knocking him off-balance. He settled back and waited on the couch, not knowing what to expect. He heard rustling noises coming from the bedroom, but didn’t dare get up to see what it was.

After several minutes, Greg looked up and actually jumped, and immediately felt foolish for doing so. The absurdity of it actually made him laugh: It was Cat, standing in the doorway with a sheet over her head, looking like the old corny image of a Halloween ghost. God, what a nut, he thought…

"WOOOOOOO!! WOOOOOO!!!" wailed Cat, really getting into the ‘spirit’ of the thing. "I’ve come to haunt you!" she waved her arms around under the sheet. "NOW you can see me!" she laughed.

Greg rolled his eyes and got up off the couch. "That’s not what I meant!"

"Oh. All right, wait a minute.." Cat promptly pulled the sheet off and tossed it in Greg’s face, momentarily blocking his vision. When he got the sheet away from his face, his mouth dropped open in amazement at what he saw before him: It was Cat in her best lingerie outfit; she had been wearing it under the sheet the whole time. "Is this better?" she asked.

Greg continued to stare at the ghostly sight of the empty corselet, stockings & high heels as they slowly approached him. Just then, he noticed that Cat was also wearing her best perfume. My god, he thought, she’s serious, she really means business…

"What’s the matter? Don’t you like it? You always used to." Greg didn’t respond. Cat went on, "Well, you’ve basically got a choice. I can either wear this outfit, or…"

"Or what?"

"Or I can take it off. Whichever you prefer."

"Keep it on!"

"I knew you’d see it my way."

It was an eerie sight, to be sure, to see those empty clothes walking around by themselves, and it still gave him chills to see it. It was kind of sexy in a weird way, but it was eerie, too. But as eerie as it was, at least it was something he could actually SEE, not like when Cat wandered around him completely invisible. Then he REALLY felt uncomfortable…

Cat moved closer to Greg. In her invisible hand, she held another nylon stocking; she playfully looped it around the back of his neck, and pulled him closer to her, reeling him in like a fish. She caressed him with the stocking and kissed him. Greg resisted at first, then he gradually began to relax & respond to her advances. Soon, he held her in his arms…

"Ohh, you wicked, wicked woman. What is this strange power you have over me?"

"I’ve got you wrapped around my little invisible finger, don’t I?"

"You do…"

"You’re powerless to resist me.."

"Yes, I am…" answered Greg, barely listening.

"I’ve got you right in the palm of my hand. All I have to do is squeeze."

"Yes…… OUCH! HEY! Don’t grab me there!" Greg suddenly stirred from his reverie.

"Why, does it hurt?"

"Ow! It does now, yes! Those nails of yours are sharp, you know! I mean it Cat, let go!"

"What do you say?"

"What?"

"What’s the Magic Word?"

"All right, Please."

"Please what?"

"PLEASE let me go, Cat!"

She paused for a moment. "Oh, all right, you poor thing. You’re so helpless. I’ll take pity on you. This time." She loosened her grip and slinked away from him. Greg sighed with relief as he eyed the empty corselet & stockings walking away.

"I sure wish you’d stop all this invisibility stuff." He said at last, "You’re so pretty, why would you not want to be seen?"

"Because I like it. This way, I have the edge. Also, I have a choice. I can be seen and be pretty if I want to. Or I can be invisible and have, shall we say, 'the upper hand.’ Hmm?" She slinked back close to him, and softly caressed his cheek with an unseen hand.

Cat continued to stroke and embrace him, but Greg tried to get serious, "Cat, we need to talk. Now. This relationship of ours---" he was cut off mid-sentence by an unseen pair of lips kissing him.

"Yes…..?" she purred.

"…is getting a little weird and---" he tried to continue, before getting cut off a second time the same way.

"And…..?" she purred again, more softly.

"And, uh….uh…." Greg tried to remember what it was he was going to say. "Oh, I uh—

I can’t remember…"

He finally gave in and began to embrace his ghostly girlfriend, rethinking the situation. Okay, so the circumstances are a little bit unusual, he thought. So what? Sometimes it almost felt normal, almost like the way it used to before. If he thought about it hard enough, he could almost…almost see her. Maybe if he closed his eyes. Yes, that’s better, he thought. Now he can clearly see her lovely face there before him…

Cat, meanwhile, held Greg tighter and tighter in her invisible arms, as though she were afraid to let him go. "Mmmmmm, my sweet little boy-toy," she purred as she held her lover close to her. "I’ve got you now… And I’ll never let you go….Never, never… You’re all mine…"
