Daniel and Trevor

by Southern Belle

"You better not be eating all of the popcorn! Save some for tonight."

"Trevor, are you listening to me?"

As Daniel turned to the back seat, he found Trevor sound asleep. Daniel had to smile. He had been talking for the last five minutes and had not been given any response from his best friend. Just as well, because in a few more turns the cabin would be in sight.

When the car was finally unpacked, Daniel called for Trevor to come to him. He received a playful spank for running off, but Trevor could not help it. The surrounding woods and backyard were calling to him wanting to be explored. The drive had been long and he was so excited to finally be out of the car.

They agreed to go for a swim in the lake after supper. Daniel said they could take the boat out in the morning. Daniel always had to remind Trevor to be still and quiet in the boat so he would not scare the fish away. Trevor, always pushing the rules, would listen to the warning and then jump in trying to make the biggest splash possible. Daniel would yell and threaten a spanking but usually saw the humor and joined his friend in a swim. Fishing poles and quiet forgotten.

They enjoyed spending time together, enjoying long walks and lazy days in the park. Daniel called it quality time. Their home was always full of love. Friends seldom joined the two on weekends. Trevor would be on the couch listening to music while Daniel read. Sometimes Daniel would prop up on pillows and watch television awhile Trevor sprawled across the foot of the bed. Daniel would catch Trevor watching him and when Daniel spoke kind words, Trevor felt that all was right with the world.

Daniel was the cook, housekeeper, protector and disciplinarian. Trevor was the carefree, fun loving, free spirited little brat. Yet, Trevor was quick to show his strength and offer comfort when Daniel was upset or had a bad day. They shared a love and respect that only best friends had the privilege of.

Later in the week, as the friends were enjoying a nice fire that Daniel built, a knock sounded at the door. Trevor sat up cautiously. A low growl came from deep inside him. He did not like their time alone being interrupted. When Daniel opened the door, a tall slender man stood smiling. "Hi, buddy!"

"Alan"! cried Daniel as he embraced his friend.

Trevor started barking loudly. He did not want to share his master with anyone else.
