Synopsis: Scully finally figures into the equation

Dana Scully knew her life was over. She couldn't believe the ridiculous situations her partner was able to talk her into.

Why did she go along? Dana still couldn't answer that question. After five years of being partnered with the most immature, irresponsible, infuriating, yet lovable Fox Mulder, Dana still followed him blindly.

Well, she'd probably follow him right to prison this time. What was she thinking? Why had she lied to the State Department agents? To make it worse, she had falsified an arrest report, to save Mulder. Not to mention taking statements and hiding them in her safety deposit box.

Oh, God! The phone....

"Mulder?" Scully was furious. She hadn't heard from him since last night. He'd left her alone to sit and worry all day.

"No, Skinner," the disembodied voice made Dana feel weak in the knees.

"Uh, how are you sir? Did you have a pleasant trip?" Dana was desperately thinking of something intelligent to say.

"I don't think my weekend was *quite* as interesting as Agent Mulder's and your own."

*OH NO! He knows something!* "What do you mean, sir?" Dana stammered.

"I mean, you are to come to my office right now. Don't change clothes, don't call Mulder, just leave. Now."

....dial tone.

Dana stared at the phone, as if it could tell her what just happened. She shook herself, and grabbed her purse. *I hope I have enough gasoline,* she thought on her way to the car. *There's no way in Hell I'm stopping at a station.*

*This is worse than when we had to go to Dad's study as kids. At least we knew what we were in for then.* Dana laughed. *I certainly hope Walter Skinner isn't planning to give me a spanking!*

A short time later she wasn't laughing. Dana wasn't so sure that the assistant director wouldn't turn her over his knee, either. Walter Skinner was furious. She sat meekly, hands in her lap, and nodded periodically during his tirade.

"So you then handcuffed your partner, held him at gun point, to give State Department agents the impression you were arresting Fox Mulder?" Spittle flew from Skinner's lips. He had quelled most of his rage, beating Mulder's ass earlier today, but he still had a little reserved for the redhead sitting so quietly before him.

"Dana Scully, I realize what an incorrigible young pup Mulder can be, but if you made any *real* attempt to curb him, both of you would get in a lot less trouble! I'm not accusing you of encouraging him, but you don't try hard enough to stop him. You allow him to put you in the middle and you conspire with him to get out of the messes he's created."

"Sir! That's not fair. I have no way, short of shooting him, to stop Fox Mulder from doing whatever the hell he wants!" Scully's eyes were blazing fire, "I will not let my partner down, if there is something I can do to prevent it, sir!"

Walter smiled, "Funny you should mention that, Agent Scully. I just might have the *something* you need right here." He held up a video cassette.

After Walter played the tape, he explained the agreement that he and Fox had made. "I have punished Fox a couple of times now. It seems to be working. This weekend's little escapade was his first big screw-up in several weeks."

Dana was amazed, "So that's why he's been behaving himself? I thought, well I don't know what I thought." She gazed steadily into Walter's eyes, "Is this what you needed to speak with my mother about? I mean, she was so willing to take Mulder into her home, even with all the trouble he can be."

Walter colored a little, "Yes. I confided in your mother and asked her advice and assistance. She has been very discreet, so please don't embarrass her by asking."

Scully's eyes narrowed, "Define *assistance* and *discreet*?"

"There was a slight incident during Fox's recent stay at your mother's home. The two of them came to an *understanding*, for lack of a better word," Skinner was entirely too off-hand with this remark.

"Walter Skinner! After our talk in the car, you didn't tell me that my mother had to get after Mulder! I can't believe it! That's not fair, and you know it!" Dana was torn between laughter and annoyance. "It doesn't surprise me that Mulder forgot to say anything," she finally chuckled. "So, how is this supposed to help me? Am I going to tell Mulder that you'll spank him if he doesn't do what I say? That doesn't sound too convincing, if you'll pardon me, sir."

Walter was serious again, "I have a proposition to make, Dana. I want you to listen closely to everything I say, and think about it before making a decision. Can you do that?"

Scully nodded, "I believe so, sir. What is it?"

Walter stood and began to pace. "I can't be around all the time. I need someone that can try to restrain Fox in my absence. If you are willing, I can give you the authority to act in my place. You will be responsible for Fox's behavior. If he needs to be punished, you will administer it. I will make sure that he understands this. The catch is - if you do not prevent his reckless and irresponsible behavior, you will be required to pay the same penalty that Fox pays. You will be punished as well. Do you think you can agree to this? You don't have to give me your answer until tomorrow."

Scully sat deep in thought as Walter retrieved the video tape and placed it is his briefcase, "That's all Agent Scully, you may go."

The next day.....

Dana thought about Walter's proposal all night. It was most tempting. The idea of warming Mulder's seat whenever she felt he needed it was most appealing. The idea of Walter doing the same for her, was not.

Yet, Mulder had agreed to the same deal, and so far had held up his end of the bargain. Wasn't she as strong as Mulder? The thought gnawed at her, if Mulder could take it, why couldn't she?

She had picked up the phone to call her mother a hundred times, but replace it without dialing. This was her decision, not her mother's. She didn't want to put her mother in an awkward position, either. If Dana discussed this with her mother, then Maggie would feel bad about not telling her about Walter sooner. Although, Dana would love to get a *blow by blow* description of Maggie and Mulder's *understanding*.

By the time Dana reached the Hoover Building, she'd made up her mind. She went directly to the A.D.'s office and asked to be announced.

"Yes, Agent Scully, the A.D. has been expecting you," Kim smiled. "You can go right in. Would you mind telling Mr. Skinner that I will hold his calls? Thanks."

Dana knocked and entered Walter's office, "Sir?" She closed the door and took a seat facing the desk. "Is this a bad time?"

Walter closed the folder he'd been reading from, "Not at all, Agent Scully. Have you thought about my offer?"

Dana's mouth was dry, "Yes sir, I have. I've decided to accept the additional responsibilities. I hope your faith in me is not misplaced."

Walter smiled warmly, "Dana, I think that we've both made the right decision. You do understand that you will be held to the same agreement I made with Fox? I will expect you to comply with my decisions and accept any punishment I feel is warranted."

"Yes sir, I do understand. I can't say I'm happy about it, but if Mulder can do it, so can I," Dana sounded as if she was trying to convince herself as much as Walter.

"Excellent!" Walter turned and picked up the phone, "Kim, would you please get Agent Mulder on the line? He's home sick today. Thanks."

Later that same day.....

"I can't believe that Walter gave *you* the authority to make sure I behave! I am a grown man, Scully! I don't need a nanny!" Mulder was fuming. He knew better than to try and argue with Walter, but he had plenty to say on the subject, "What did you say to him, any way? I bet you tattled to him and blamed me for the whole thing! Didn't you?"

Scully remained serene, "Mulder, I didn't say anything, Walter called me. Remember? You left me alone the other night. I didn't hear another word from you until I came to your apartment this afternoon." Dana was making Mulder dinner. He had refused when she offered to examine his *injuries* but was more than willing to accept some home cooking.

"That's Walter's fault. He ordered me not to call you. He said I was confined to quarters until further notice, and was not to use the phone," Mulder offered in lieu of an apology. "He really went to town on me, Scully," Mulder was pouting again, "I could barely drive home yesterday. I was able to walk, but had to sleep on my stomach all night," he really did look pitiful.

"I'm very sorry that Walter used your belt on you, Mulder. I didn't have anything to do with it, though." Dana had come to sit beside Mulder, who was still lying on his couch. She rubbed his leg and hip gently. "Are you sure you don't want me to look at it?"

"No, I'm fine," Mulder looked up at her sadly. "I *could* use a hug, though."

Scully took him in her arms and squeezed him tightly. She thought he might be crying. She held him for a few moments, then patted his back, "I need to get back to the stove. Just lie quietly and I'll have dinner ready in just a jiffy."

Mulder sniffled a bit and lay back on the couch, "Scully?" Slight hesitation, "You won't really punish me, right? I mean, if you want to tell on me to Walter, that's cool, but you don't have to go any further than that."

Scully gave Mulder a pained look, "Is that what Walter made us agree to? I don't think so, Mulder. My ass is on the line now, too. If I let you mess up, I get the same thing you get." She continued to set the table, "Besides, there are lots of times that you get into scrapes that Walter never even hears about. If I can prevent that from happening, you bet I'd be willing to warm your butt."

"Scully!" Mulder pulled the pillow from behind his head, placed it over his face. A groan escaped from beneath the pillow.

Scully giggled, "I know it's embarrassing, Mulder. Just stay out of trouble and you won't have to worry about it. Deal?"

She thought she heard him reply, but couldn't make out the words. She wasn't sure she wanted to know.

Two weeks later......

Walter invited Fox, Dana and Maggie to dinner at his apartment. Fox was uncomfortable. His last visit to Walter's apartment was not a pleasant memory. After everyone was seated at the table, Walter addressed his guests, "I'm glad we have this opportunity to enjoy one another's company. I have something to discuss with you, and then we will forget about business for the rest of the evening. As everyone present is aware, Fox and I have been working on his lack of discipline. Maggie, you have been a tremendous help, too."

Walter smiled at Maggie Scully, before going on, "Now, due to certain unforeseen circumstances, I have found it necessary to include Dana in our endeavor."

Fox was memorizing the contents of his plate, like there would be a test later.

"Dana has agreed to act in my place, when necessary. I have added the stipulation that, if she fails in her duty, or is coerced by Fox in any way, she will suffer the same penalties as Fox does."

Dana was now engrossed in her plate of food, also.

"I will be out of town the weekend, and will need to rely on you, Dana. Maggie, I would like you to be available, if Dana should need your help. Fox?" Walter stared pointedly at the topic of his lecture, "I expect you to behave yourself. I don't want to come back to another catastrophe. Do you understand me, son?"

"I understand you, sir," Fox was mortified. How could Walter talk about him like this. *I'm not a child!* Mulder screamed silently. "You don't have to worry about me, Walter. I'm going to be just fine," Mulder glared at his host.

"I'm sure you will be. Now, let's eat," Walter dug in.

Maggie risked a furtive glance at her daughter. Dana pointedly ignored her mother. She had no intentions of discussing this subject any further tonight, "The veal is wonderful, Walter. Is this a family recipe?" Dana thought the dinner tasted like sawdust, but was too well-mannered to admit it.

Fox seemed to have lost his appetite, "I've always liked asparagus." He took a small bite and washed it down with a drink from his wineglass.

"Well, everything's just delicious," Maggie added. She was unable to think of another thing to say.

Walter was enjoying himself tremendously.

The following weekend.....

"Scully, you're not listening. I've explained all of this all ready," Mulder was completely exasperated. "It's not really that dangerous. I can get in the building, check out the vault, and be out in less than thirty minutes."

"Mulder, I will not allow you to do this! Do you understand? If Walter had an inkling of what you're suggesting, you wouldn't be able to sit down for a week! No means no, Mulder!"

Scully was at her wit's end. Spanking Fox Mulder hadn't been on her list of things to do this weekend, but now her palm was itching to connect with the seat of his pants, "I really mean it. I know you think I won't spank you, but you're mistaken."

Mulder felt chill bumps break out across his flesh. *God, she sounds just like her mother!* He tried pleading, "Scully, don't be like this. You know me, I can do it. No one has to know but you and me," Mulder charm, yep, works every time!

"How many times do I have to tell you? You are worse than a child, Fox Mulder! No!" Scully was in his face now. She had advanced on him during her tirade, backing him into a chair so he was forced to sit. Scully hovered over him, their noses almost touching, "I Said No." She stood and smoothed her hair. "Go home, Mulder. Get some sleep. I'll see you in the morning."

"Jeez Scully, you don't have to shout. Okay, I'm going home," Mulder got up, gathered what was left of his tattered dignity, and headed for the door, "I'll call you tomorrow. Maybe you'll be in a better mood." He huffed out of her apartment.

2:30am.....

ring...ring...ring...

"Hello, Mulder is that you?" Scully answered automatically in her sleep. "What's wrong?"

"Miss Scully? Dana Scully?" An unfamiliar voice brought Dana completely awake.

"Yes, this is Dana Scully. Who's calling, please?" She was frantically pulling herself out of bed. Phone calls in the middle of the night were always bad news. Always.

"Miss Scully, this is Officer Jefferies, with the D.C. Police. We have a gentleman who insists that he be allowed to speak with you. Do you know a Fox Mulder?" The phone offered no answers as Scully stared at it.

"Yes sir, I know him. Can you please put him on the line? Thanks," Dana was furious.

"Scully! Come down here now, and explain to these imbeciles just how they have ruined an F.B.I. investigation. I'm waiting for you. They won't let me go until someone can corroborate my *story*." Mulder whispered into the phone, "Don't be mad at me, please just come down here and straighten this out. I'm sorry I lied, and I'm sorry I did what you told me not to do. Okay? Just come and get me," Mulder hung up in Scully's ear.

Scully arrived at the police station and blew in like a hurricane. The poor desk sergeant didn't know what hit him. She bluffed her way through the entire process and had him apologizing for picking Mulder up in the first place. How was he supposed to know that breaking and entering was part of an F.B.I. investigation. Dana Scully, G-Woman had pulled Mulder out of the fire, yet again.

Once they were in Scully's car, Mulder said, "Just hang a right up here. You can drop me off at my car. Scully? You needed to turn right, back at the intersection. Scully, where are we going? My car's back there," pointing out the passenger window, Mulder looked at his partner. "Back there. You need to turn around."

"Shut your mouth, now," Scully's voice was like steel.

"But..."

"I said shut up now," she gave Mulder a withering glance. "I don't want to hear another word from you until we get home."

Mulder, for once, obeyed orders. He sat quietly in his seat, hoping that they would be involved in a fatal collision.

After unlocking the apartment door, Scully pushed Mulder inside. While he was still off balance, she shoved him forward until she had him aimed for the work area in her living room.

"Scully! Stop pushing me!" Fox cried, "I'm going to fall, now stop it!"

"Fox William Mulder, you have to be the most infuriating person I have ever met! What did I tell you *not* to do last night?" Scully was shaking her finger in his face, "This is the last straw, buddy. Now you have had it!"

She grabbed his arm and spun him so he faced the table. Hooking one foot in front of his, she pushed his shoulders forward with her hands, while pulling back with her foot causing Mulder to fall across the table top, with a thud, "If you know what's good for you, you will not move a muscle! Am I making myself clear?"

"Perfectly," Mulder wheezed. He lay still more from having the wind knocked out of him, than any other reason.

Scully went into her bedroom. Mulder glanced over his shoulder to see what she was doing. He didn't risk getting up. Good thing, because Scully was coming back. She had something in her hand.

*Oh, no!* It's the antique hairbrush he had given her. The bristles reminded him of her hair color, so on impulse he had bought it. It had a silver handle, and a large oval back, inlaid with mother of pearl, "Oh, please Scully! Don't hit me with that thing!" Fox was truly begging now.

"Take off your jeans," Scully's voice was flat. "Do it."

Mulder got up slowly, pleading with his eyes. He slipped off his shoes and took off his Levis, never breaking eye contact with her.

Scully took a shuddering breath, "Turn around and bend over the table, Fox. This is going to be hard enough for me, so don't make it any worse."

Mulder felt terrible, and did exactly as she commanded, "I know you don't want to hear this right now, but I really am sorry." He lowered his head, and hid his face in his folded arms, "I'm ready. Go ahead."

Scully reached out quickly and jerked down his boxers. She struck the first blow before she had time to chicken out.

Fox gasped but held still.

She set her jaw and started to paddle him in earnest.

She spanked him until she was crying too hard to continue. Fox was crying too. She turned him around and hugged him. Fox held her tightly. She pulled back to look into his face, "Don't you ever, ever force me to do that again! Do you hear me, Fox Mulder?" She sobbed and buried her face in his shoulder.

Fox was overwhelmed, he broke down and wept freely. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He held on to Scully and rocked her back and forth. "Oh Dana, I'm so sorry."

After they had both calmed down, Dana looked up at Fox, "What an I going to tell Walter?"
