By noon Iggy had a whole new wardrobe. Most things had been
simple to pick up. Y fronts and undershirts, athletic and black
socks, a dozen colored T-shirts, half a dozen pairs of jeans. It was
simply a matter of finding them in the children's section and making
sure they didn't have Pooh or some other character on them. The
same with the shorts and button down shirts. Damalis added
sweats and sweaters to the growing pile as Iggy's eyes got wider.
Toiletries, three belts and two dozen handkerchiefs rounded off the
selections.
Damalis let Iggy have a pretty free rein on most things. However,
he did veto anything with a death logo or profanity and ignored
Iggy's rolling eyes. There was a tense moment when Damalis
stepped into the dressing room where Iggy was trying on pants, to
check the fit. Iggy started to protest but one raised hand stopped
that without another word. Iggy spent two hours trying on clothing
and being poked and prodded. He was trying to be good and even
when the sales lady made a comment on what a cute little boy he
was he didn't even say a word.
For the nice casual clothing and shoes they went to a shop Damalis
knew for smaller adults and for the two suits Damalis insisted Iggy
needed they went to Damalis' own tailor.
"I still don't see why I need a suit. Its not like I am going anywhere
fancy." Iggy had protested the third time he squirmed and was
stuck by a pin.
Damalis chuckled, "For church on Sunday if nothing else."
"I don't go to church," Iggy stated as if that settled it.
"You do now." Damalis said firmly in a voice that brooked no
argument.
Iggy just mumbled and endured the fitting process.
He was dressed in his new clothing as they ate lunch in the mall
later. "Man, I can still taste that soap." He said as he made a face.
"Don't swear and I won't wash out your mouth again." Damalis
chuckled and looked at his watch. "We have to be at the restaurant
in two hours. You have clothing now but I know boys need a few
'other' things. Tell me what you like to do."
"Roller blading, playing basketball. I may be small but I can make
the 3 point shot almost every time. I like video games both playing
and making them. Surfing the net and hanging out, shi.errr stuff like
that.
Damalis smiled at the correction, the boy was learning. "Fine. Lets
hit the sports store first. Then, if there is time, we can stop at the
electronics shop."
"Bitchin!" Iggy exclaimed as he jumped up, then yelped at the
stinging swat that connected with his sore rump.
"Language!" Damalis warned.
"Sorry" Iggy blushed as he rubbed his rump and looked around to
see if anyone else had seen.
"Just watch it Ignatius, I don't want to take you to the men's room
but I will if I have to."
"You don't have to Dama, It won't happen again." Iggy assured him.
Damalis smiled like he actually believed that. They went to the
sports store.
45 minutes later they came out again loaded with several bags,
they had gotten a basketball and net, inline skates and the pads
and helmet to go with them, a football and a bat and baseball with a
glove. Damalis knew he was spoiling the boy but reasoned the boy
needed a bit of spoiling with the life he had led up to now.
"We have to make this quick." Damalis said as they went into the
electronics store.
"Got it." Iggy agreed, his eyes lit up as he saw the gadgets and
gizmos, the games and computers. Iggy headed for the video
games as Damalis spoke with the clerk. 35 minutes later Damalis
tapped Iggy on the shoulder. "Lets go, we have one more stop to
make."
"One more minute." Iggy said totally engrossed in his game.
Damalis gave him exactly one more minute then reached over and
turned off the display.
"DAMA!!" Iggy exploded. He had been one level away from
defeating the gremlin and getting the last golden ring.
"Lets go Iggy." Damalis said firmly, forestalling the tantrum. "Which
Game Boy did you want?"
Iggy picked up three, and looked them over critically. "Can't I have
all three Dama?" he begged, "Its too hard to choose."
Damalis almost smiled at the audacity of the boy. "Just one for now
Iggy," He said firmly. "Choose."
Iggy sighed dramatically but did pick one. Damalis ruffled his hair
and smiled as he paid for the game.
The next stop was a quick. Damalis selected several notebooks ,
paper, pens, pencils, markers, a ruler, crayons, sharpeners, and
other supplies from the office supply shop. "What's all this for?"
Iggy asked.
"You'll see." Damalis said with a grin.
They were well laden with packages as they walked out to Damalis'
jeep. "Can we stop and get ice cream?" Iggy asked hopefully.
Damalis checked his watch. "We can get some at the restaurant
when we get there."
"Well its not the same but okay I guess." Iggy agreed.
Damalis laughed and true to his word, when they got to the
restaurant, Damalis got Iggy a large boy of Tillimuk French Vanilla
Bean ice cream with fresh strawberries and a drizzle of chocolate
syrup, some pecans, whipped cream (fresh made) and a cherry.
"Enjoy." Damalis said and turned to get started on his prep work.
Small arms locked around his waist before he could move a step.
He turned around and caught the man-child in his arms in a tight
hug. "Thank you for everything." Came the whispered words filled
with emotion.
Damalis felt his throat tighten. Such a simple, honest gesture. "My
pleasure Imp. My pleasure." They stayed in the hug for another
minute. Then Damalis cleared his throat. "Best eat your ice cream
before it melts."
Iggy laughed as he let go of the hug and wiped his eyes. "Yes Sir.
Little chance of that happening with me around."
Damalis laughed as he watched the boy dig into the ice cream with
gusto. A very warm feeling filled his heart as he remembered those
small arms around his waist.
To be continued.
