This is a list of my favorite songs to sing to which I did not write the lyrics. I have here the lyrics, translations if applicable, any information I know, and a recording of myself singing it (currently without accompaniment, and often over 1 MB. I advise only the hardy to listen). My FAVORITE song is at the bottom; I scanned in the entire score. My delight in these songs stems more from the fact that they are enjoyable to sing/they are technically difficult/they were assigned by my voice teachers: than because I have any particular fondness for the lyrics.

THE GREATEST ADVENTURE
Glenn Yarbrough 1977
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.
Today and tomorrow are yet to be said.
The chances, the changes are all yours to make.
The mold of your life is in your hands to break.
The greatest adventure is there if you're bold
Let go of the mood that life makes you hold
To measure the meaning can make you delay
It's time you stop thinking and wasting the day.
A man who's a dreamer and never takes heed
Who think of a world that is just make believe
Will never know passion will never know pain
Who sits by the window will one day see rain.
ALMA DEL CORE
Antonio Caldara, poet unknown
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Sempre costante t'adorero
T'adorero, t'adorero, T'adorero, t'adorero
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Sempre costante t'adorero
Sempre costante t'adorero
Saro contiento
Nel mio tormento
Se quel bel labro baciar potro.
Se quel bel labro, Se quel bel labro baciar potro.
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Sempre costante t'adorero
T'adorero, t'adorero, T'adorero, t'adorero
Alma del core, spirto del' alma
Sempre costante t'adorero
Sempre costante t'adorero
Translation:
Soul of my hear, spirit of my soul
Always faithful, I will love you.
I will love you.
To be content
Do not torture me.
How I will kiss your beautiful upturned lips.
SEBBEN CRUDELE
Antonio Caldara, poet unknown
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele, sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Con la lunghezza del mio servir.
La tua firezza, la tua firezza,
Sapro stancar.
La tua firezza sapro stancar.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele, sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Sebben crudele mi fai languir.
Sempre fedele ti voglio amar.
Translation:
Alough, cruel one, you make me languish,
Forever faithful, I want to love you.
With the length of my service
Your pride
Will wear down.
VILLANELLE
Eva dell'Acqua and F. van der Elst
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle
Dans le ciel pur du matin:
Elle allait a tire d'aile,
Vers le pays ou l'apelle,
Vers le pays ou l'apelle
Le soleil et le jasmin.
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle!
J'ai longtemps suivi des yeux
Le vol de la voyageuse
Depuis mon ame reveuse
L'accompagne par les cieux,
Ah! Ah! Au pays mysterieux! Ah!
Et j'aurais voulu comme elle
Suivre le meme chemin,
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle,
Elle allait a tire d'aile, a tire d'aile!
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle
Dans le ciel pur du matin:
Elle allait, a tire d'aile,
Vers le pays ou l'apelle,
Vers le pays ou l'apelle,
Le soleil et le jasmin.
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle!
J'ai vu passer l'hirondelle!
l'hirondelle! Ah! L'hirondelle!
Translation:
I saw the swallow pass
In the pure morning sky:
She went, winging swiftly,
To the country where call
The sun and jasmine.
A long time I followed with my eyes
The migratory flight
While my dreaming soul
Accompanied her through the skies.
Ah! In the mysterious county!
And I had wanted, like her
To follow the same way,
I saw the swallow's flight!
Come unto Him all ye that labor.
The Sun, whose rays are all ablaze
Observe his flame, that placid dame,
Mecco verrai su quella,
How could I know I would have to leave you?
Masquerade!
Mother, the dearest, the sweetest, the best,
Mother, we crown you Queen of May,
Mother, we greet you with flowers so gay.
Mother, forgiving and loyal and true,
Alas, my love! you do me wrong
Greensleeves was all my joy,
I have been ready at your hand,
I bought thee kerchiefs for thy head,
I bought thee petticoats of the best,
They smock of silk both fair and white,
They girdle of gold so brilliant red
Thy purse and eke thy gay gilt knives,
Thy crimson stockings all of silk,
Thy gown was of the grassy green,
Thy garters fringed with all the gold,
My gayest gelding I thee gave,
My men were clothed all in green
They set thee up, they took thee down,
For every morning when thou rose,
Thou couldst desire no earthly thing
And who did pay for all this gear
Well I will pray to God on high,
Greensleeves, now farewell! adieu!
Le Roi Renaud de guerre vint;
Renaud, Renaud, réjouis-toi!
Faites-moi vite un beau lit blanc;
Ah! dites-moi, mère, m'amie,
Ah! dites-moi, mère, m'amie,
Ah! dites-moi, mère, m'amie,
Quand à l'église elle est allée
Ah! dites-moi, mère, m'amie,
Ah! dites-moi, mère, m'amie,
Renaud, Renaud, mon réconfort,
Terre, ouvre-toi! Terre, fends-toi,
Renaud, Renaud, rejoice!
Quickly make me a beautiful white bed.
Oh, tell me, mother dearest,
Oh, tell me, mother dearest,
When she came to the church,
Oh, tell me, mother dearest,
Oh, tell me, mother dearest,
Renaud, Renaud, my comfort,
A kak po lugu, lugu
Povseel golovushku
Chado moye meepoye,
Rodeemaya matushka,
Chuzhaya storonushka,
Nyervee dvorneek dyadysheen,
Nyevyeleechka, malyenka,
And at dusk a young man comes,
Come, son, tell me whence your grief,
Yes, my mother, joy has gone
Nowhere can I find relief,
Mother, grandfather, uncle, aunt,
But she covered up her head,
Lorsque au soleil couchant les rivières sont roses,
Un conseil de gouter le charme d'être au monde
When Israel was in Egypt's land,
Thus saith the Lord, bold Moses said,
No more shall they in bondage toil.
The Lord told Moses what to do
O, come along, Moses, you'll not get lost,
As Israel stood by the waterside
When they reached the other shore,
Paraoh said he'd go across.
Jordan shall stand up like a wall,
Der Holle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen;
Tod und Verzweiflung,
Tod und Verzweiflung flammen um mich her!
Fuhlt nicht durch dich Sarastro Todesschmezen,
Sarastro Todesschmerzen
So bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr,
so bist du mein'
meine Tochter nimmermehr
meine Tochter nimmermehr.
so bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr
Verstossen sei auf ewig,
verlassen sei auf ewig,
zertrummert sei'n auf ewig
alle Bande der Natur
verstossen
verlassen
und zertrummert
alle Bande der Natur;
alle Bande
alle Bande der Natur,
wenn nicht durch dich Sarastro wird erblassen!
Hort! Hort! Hort Rachegotter!
Hort! der Mutter schwur.

COME UNTO HIM
Handel
Come unto Him, ye that are heavy laden,
And he shall give you rest.
Come unto Him all ye that labor.
Come unto Him, ye that are heavy laden,
And He shall give you rest.
Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,
For He is meek and lowly of heart,
And ye shall find rest,
And ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,
For He is meek and lowly of heart,
And ye shall find rest,
And ye shall find rest unto your souls.
THE SUN WHOSE RAYS
Gilbert and Sullivan
With ever-living glory
Does not deny his majesty;
He scorns to tell the story.
He don't exclaim, "I blush for shame,
"So kindly be indulgent,"
But fierce and bold in fiery gold,
He glories all effulgent.
I mean to rule the earth as he the sky.
We really know our worth, the sun and I.
I mean to rule the earth as he the sky.
We really know our worth, the sun and I.
The Moon's Celestial Highness
Has not a trace upon her face
Of diffidence or shyness.
She borrows light all through the night
That Mankind may all acclaim her,
And, truth to tell, she lights up well,
So I, for one, don't blame her.
Ah, pray make no mistake, we are not shy.
We're very wide awake, the Moon and I.
Ah, pray make no mistake, we are not shy.
We're very wide awake, the Moon and I.
A PASTORAL
Francesco Maria Veracini
Amena colinetta;
Amena colinetta;
Libera pastorella, pastorella,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar.
Mecco verrai su quella,
Amena colinetta;
Amena colinetta;
Libera pastorella, pastorella,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar.
A pascolar, a pascolar.
Smorzar la sete in sponda,
Potrem del ruscelletto, potrem del ruscelletto;
Senza temer che l'onda, che l'onda,
Puo il labro avvelenar. Ah!
Mecco verrai su quella,
Amena colinetta;
Amena colinetta;
Libera pastorella,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
Ah! pascolar, a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar.
L'agnelle a pascolar.
L'agnelle a pascolar,
L'agnelle a pascolar.
Translation:
Come with me to that one
Pleasant hill,
Free shepherd,
To graze the lambs.
We can wet our thirst in the banks
Of the little stream;
Without fearing that the waves
Will send us to the tomb.
HOW COULD I KNOW
Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman
How could I know I would hurt you so?
You were the one I was born to love.
Oh, How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?
How can I say to go on without me?
How, when I know you still need me so?
How can I say not to dream about me?
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?
Forgive me, can you forgive me
And hold me in your heart,
And find some new way to love me
Now that we're apart?
How could I know I would never hold you?
Never again in this world, but, oh!
Sure as you breathe, I am there inside you.
How could I ever know?
How could I ever know?
MASQUERADE
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice
Paper faces on parade . . .
Masquerade!
Hide your face so the world will never find you.
Masquerade!
Every face a different shade . . .
Masquerade!
Look around, there's another mask behind you.
Flash of mauve,
Splash of puce,
Fool and king,
Ghoul and goose,
Green and black,
Queen and priest,
Trace of rouge,
Face of beast.
Faces . . .
Take your turn, take a ride
On the merry-go-round
In an inhuman race.
Eye of gold,
Thigh of blue,
True is false,
Who is who,
Curl of lip,
Swirl of gown,
Ace of hearts,
Face of clown.
Faces . . .
Drink it in, drink it up
'Til you've drowned
In the light, in the sound . . .
But who can name the face?
Masquerade!
Grinning yellows, spinning reds . . .
Masquerade!
Take your fill-
Let the spectacle astound you.
Masquerade!
Burning glances, turning heads.
Masquerade!
Stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you.
MOTHER, QUEEN OF MAY
John J. Bell and G. Grace Bell
You who are loyal whatever the test,
You, we would honor above all the rest,
And crown you the Queen of May.
The lovely Queen of May!
Love's homage we pay
As we crown you today
Our Queen, the Queen of May.
God's own pure off'ring of beauty are they.
Strewn in the pathway of Mother today,
Of Mother, the Queen of May.
Finding excuse for the wrong that we do,
Oh, the sweet kindness and blindness of you,
Of Mother, the Queen of May.
GREENSLEEVES
Accredited to King Henry VIII
To cast me off discourteously;
For I have loved you oh, so long
Delighting in your company.
Greensleeves was my delight;
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
To grant whatever you would crave;
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and goodwill for to have.
That were wrought fine and gallantly;
I kept the both at board and bed,
Which cost my purse well favouredly.
The cloth as fine and fine might be;
I gave thee jewels for thy chest,
And all this cost I spent on thee.
With gold embroidered most gorgeously;
Thy petticoat of silk so right;
And thus I bought thee gladly.
With pearls bedecked sumptuously;
The like no other lasses had,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
Thy pin case gallant to the eye;
No better wore the burgess wives,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
With gold all wrought above the knee;
Thy pumps as white as was the milk,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
The sleeves of satin hanging by,
Which made thee be our harvest queen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
And silver aglets hanging by,
Which made thee blithe for to behold,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
To ride wherever liked thee;
No lady ever was so brave
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
And they did ever wait on thee;
And this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
They served thee with humility;
Thy foot might not once touch the ground,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
I sent thee dainties orderly,
To cheer thy stomach from all woes,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
But still thou hadst it readily;
Thy music still to play and sing
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
That thou didst spend when pleased thee?
Even that I am rejected here,
And thou disdain'st to love me.
That thou my constancy shall see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.
God I pray to prosper thee;
For I am still thy lover true.
Come once again and love me.
Trois pastoureaux a recontré
Terre s'ouvrit, terre fendit,
Et la belle rendit l'esprit.
Translation:
King Renaud came from war
Holding his guts in his hand.
His mother it was on the battlements,
Who saw her son Renaud coming.
Your wife has given birth to a son.
Neither for wife, nor for son,
I will not rejoice.
I won't rest there long.
And when midnight came,
King renaud gave up the ghost.
What do I hear singing here?
My daughter, it's the procession [of monks]
Going around the house.
Which dress should I wear today?
Wear the white, wear the grey,
The black is the best choice to wear.
Three shepherds told [each other],
Here is the wife of the Lord
Who was buried the other day.
What did those shepherds say?
They said to hurry your feet,
Or we won't have mass.
Why is the earth freshly dug up?
My daughter, I can no longer lie.
Renaud is dead and buried.
You're so veiled in death!
Devine Renaud, my comfort,
You're so veiled in death!
Lugu, zyelyenomu,
Tut hodeet- gulyayet
Udaloy molodcheek.
Na pchavu shotoronuchku,
Uveedala matushka,
Usmotryela rodnaya.
Chto hodeesh nye vyesyelo,
Chto hodeesh nye vyesyelo,
Gulyayesh nye radosno!
Chemu vyesyelitsa,

Chuzhaya storonushka,
Za rybkoy slobodyshka
Nyevyeleechka, malyenka,
Tree cheteerye dvorneeka:
Drugoy dvorneek tyetushkeen
A tretee dvorneek vdovynka,
U vdovynk pochyenka,
Na nyee shubka alyenka,

Sama chyernobrovaya.
Translation:
In the fields the green, green grass
Waves and glistens in the sun.
Now the sun is sinking low
And the day will soon be done.
From his sorrows solace seeks,
And his mother watches him,
And to him she softly speaks:
Why do you thus hang your head?
Why do you thus hang your head?
'Tis as though all joys were dead.
And my head is bowed with grief,
My unhappiness is deep,
Nowhere can I find relief,
My heart lies in a far-off land
With a maid so fair, so fine,
Many suitors sought her hand.
Each had one they favour'd there,
This sweet maid so passing fair
Wore her beauty in her hair.
Wore a fur of beaver red.
Yet the fur could hide from none
Dark-lashed eyes that warmed and shone.
CHARLOTTE'S WEB
Fragile and magical shadows
Silently start to appear.
Lovely and lyrical,
Silvery miracle:
Charlotte's web.
Silently spinning her tracings,
Lacy and gracefully sheer.
Over and under,
The infinite wonder
Of Charlotte's web.
Why is she spinning and weaving away
All night long?
What is she trying so hard to convey
With her silent song?
Sometimes when somebody loves you,
Miracles somehow appear,
And there, in the warp and the woof
Is the proof
Of it:
Charlotte's Web!
BEAU SOIR
Claude Debussy and Paul Borget
Elle à la mer, nous au tombeau.
Translation:
When the sun sets, the rivers are pink,
And when a gentle tremor runs over the fields of wheat,
Advice to be happy seems to emanate from things
And rises to the troubled heart.
Advice to taste the charm of being in the world
When one is young and the evening is beautiful,
Since we go, as goes the wave,
It to the sea, we to the grave.
Let my people go,
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let my people go.
Go down, Moses,
'Way down in Egypt's land,
Tell ol' Pharaoh
To let my people go.
Let my people go.
If not, I'll smite your first-born dead,
Let my people go.
Let them come out with Egypt's spoil.
To see the Hebrew children through.
Stretch out your rod and come across.
At God's command it did divide.
They sang a song of triumph o'er.
But Pharaoh and his host were lost.
Let my people go.
And the walls of Jericho shall fall
Let my people go.
Go down, Moses,
'Way down in Egypt's land,
Tell ol' Pharaoh
To let my people go.
APRÈS UN RÊVE
Dans un sommeil que charmait ton image,
Je rêvais le bonheur . . . ardent mirage;
Tes yeux étaient plus doux, ta voix pure et sonore,
Tu rayonnais comme un ciel éclairé par l'aurore;
Tu m'appelais et je quittais la terre
Pour m'enfuir avec toi vers la lumière;
Les cieux pour nous entr'ouvraient leurs nues,
Splendeurs inconnues,
Lueurs divines entrevues.
Hélas!
Hélas, triste réveil des songes,
Je t'appelle, ô nuit, rends-moi tes mensonges,
Reviens, reviens radieuse,
Reviens, ô nuit mystérieuse!
Translation:
In a sleep which charmed your image,
I dreamed of happiness . . . what a fantasy;
Your eyes were more calm, your voice pure and strong,
You glowed like a sky brightened by the dawn;
You called me and I left the earth
To flee with you towards the light;
The skies opened for us,
Their bare, unknown wonders,
And show glimpses of divine gleams.
Alas!
Alas, sad waking from dreams,
I call you, O night, bring me your lies,
Return, return Radiant,
Return, O mysterious night!
