One of the things I've found in my local travels about town is how difficult it is to get decent books about the paranormal. My local bookshops tend to alternate paranormal books between the "Spirituality", "Alternative Therapy", "Science Fiction" and "Parapsychology" sections - until they abandoned stocking them at all. It's frustrating, especially since the books they do stock tend to be glossy books written without any serious thought or heavily biased towards religious or popular misconceptions of forteana. The real nitty-gritty is totally overlooked.
But no more! In conjunction with Amazon.com, I'm going to be adding important paranormal books to this page (with a heavy bias towards UFOlogy) so that you can order them online. If you can recommend other books (please check they are available from Amazon.com first) please let me know! (A short review would also be nice).
More to be added...
Edward Ashpole. The UFO Phenomena : A Scientific Look at the Evidence for Extraterrestrial Contacts
A study of UFO phenomena from a biologist's point of view. While it's unlikely ET/EBE has set foot on the Earth - what about their probes? Includes a chapter on Roy Dutton's well-researched Close Encounter Prediction system
Charles Berlitz and William L. Moore. The Roswell Incident
Berlitz and Moore's study of the (in)famous 1947 Roswell Crash. I believe this was the book which effectively resurrected the Roswell Incident. Like it or loathe it, it's still an important text.
Howard Blum. Out There: The Government's Secret Quest for Extraterrestrials
While considered a disappointment by many, the book brings the experience of an influential journalist and author to the field.
Jerome Clark. The UFO Encyclopedia, Volume 1: UFOs in the 1980s
Jerome Clark's UFO Encyclopaedia provides a comprehensive look at the field, and presents many items which are difficult to obtain elsewhere. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to at least look at a copy, let alone buy one. However, the recommendation of many top UFO researchers must be pretty good - when else do most UFOlogists agree?
Order Volume 1
Order 2nd Edition
Budd Hopkins. Intruders : The Incredible Visitations at Copley Woods
While not a particular fan of Hopkins, his work has proved influential and thought-provoking. Intruders presents the theory that alien abduction and experimentation is working towards human-alien hybrids.
David M. Jacobs and John E. Mack.Secret Life : Firsthand, Documented Accounts of UFO Abductions
Powerful and important research into abduction phenomena. Widely regarded as essential reading.
Jenny Randles and Peter Hough. The Complete Book of UFOs : An Investigation into Alien Contacts & Encounters
Colourful and readable introduction to UFOlogy, covering a wide range of topics throughout the modern history of UFO research (starting with the Airship waves of the late 19th Century).
Jacques Vallee Passport to Magonia: From Folklore to Flying Saucers
Jacques Vallee discusses the similarities between traditional folklore and contemporary UFO encounters.
For a bigger and better choice of paranormal books, I can recommend Clai's Paranormal Bookshop which provides a huge selection of titles, all carefully categorised and available for online purchase, Uforia-Books and ParapsychologyBooks.com. Take a look, you won't be disappointed!
