Asyr is a graduate of the Bothan Martial Academy. A member of a minor noble family, she was educated to pursue a business career, but submitted her application to the academy without her family's consent. After graduation, she was recruited into the Bothan Military Intelligence Division, where on one mission she was inserted into Coruscant, then still held by the Empire and known as Imperial Center.

While on Imperial Center, she came into contact with members of Rogue Squadron in a seedy underworld cantina. Not knowing who they were, she nearly caused Gavin Darklighter to be killed as an anti-alien bigot. She learned the truth about Gavin and the rest of Rogue Squadron when Gavin saved her life during a stormtrooper attack.

Asyr revealed herself to Wedge Antilles and joined the Rogues, becoming a vital element in their successful liberation of the former Imperial Center. Proving herself to be a talented pilot, she flew as Rogue Two, Wedge's wingmate. During this time, Asyr began a romance with Gavin, inspite of his relative youth and naivete.

However, Aysr was not immune to Bothan political intrigue. As a prominent Bothan, she was often the target of manipulation by Borsk Fey'lar, the Bothan member of the New Republic Council. Asyr remained with the Squadron as long as she could, dreaming of a life with Gavin. They hoped to marry and adopt children. It was not to happen. To spare Gavin after Fey'lar began to threaten his future, Asyr let Gavin believe she had been killed during the battle at Distna while chasing Ysanne Isard. Aided by Booster Terrik, Mirax Terrik, and Iella Wessiri, Asyr fled the Squadron, planning to adopt a new identity, settle on a Bothan colony world, and work against politicians like Fey'lar.
