X-Wing #9: Starfighters of Adumar Aaron Allston

Affliations

Formerly Cheriss was a subject of the Perator of Cartann, on the planet Adumar, located in Wild Space, an area of the Unknown Regions. She later sought asylum with the New Republic.

Special Distinctions

Growing up on Cartann, Cheriss's dream was to become a pilot and escape the life of servitude her mother led in Cartann's munitions factories. However, she was unable to do so because she suffered from vertigo. Knowing that honor was earned in Adumari soceity by defeating one's enemies (in fights to the death), Cheriss instead chose to develop her combat skills as a swordswoman even though it carried less prestige. Although not quite out her teenage years, Cheriss was highly skilled using the Cartann blastsword and hand-to-hand combat, becoming the Ground Champion of Cartann. As Ground Champion, Cheriss faced challengers to her title as entertainment for the elite of Adumari society.

Appointed as a guide to Wedge Antilles while he was on Adumar, Cheriss became infatuated with Wedge. She taught him and the other X-Wing pilots the nuances of Adumari soceity, often helping to save their lives in the process. However, when Cheriss discovered that Wedge was in love with Iella Wessiri, she decided to allow herself to be beaten in combat, and publicly humiliated herself when she refused to deliver a death blow to an opponent, as dictated by Adumari custom and the Perator.

Sensing what Cheriss was attempting to do, Wedge and the other pilots intervened. Moments before Wedge could do so, Wes Janson stepped in and challenged the opponent who defeated Cheriss as he was about the deliver the death blow. While Wes battled Cheriss's opponent, Wedge and the others spirited Cheriss away to a New Republic ship in orbit. Cheriss's life was saved by the medical technicians there, who also discovered that her vertigo was chemical in origin and could be cured.

Cheriss returned to the surface to help Wedge and his people defeat the Perator. However, since she had been publicly humiliated and thus could not stay on Adumar, Cheriss accepted Wedge's offer of help, and asked for asylum with the New Republic. With the New Republic, she would learn to fly at last.
