Affliations Mara was raised to be and lived her early life as The Emperor's Hand. She traveled the galaxy serving as a secret agent of the Emperor. After the Empire's defeat by the Rebel Alliance, Mara found herself stranded on Tatooine. There, she met up with the smuggler Talon Karrde, and eventually she became his second-in-command. In the chronologically "most recent" of the published novels, Mara runs The Smuggler's Alliance, siding with her own best interests, but more often than not, also siding with the New Republic. Special Distinctions Mara is force-sensitive, but has not yet sought to train herself "offically" (i.e., in the early authorized novels) in the ways of the force. However, one can suppose she might practice on her own; in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, Luke gives her Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber. As time went on, Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker realized the strong bond they shared, and following their adventure on Niruan (The Hand of Thrawn of Duology), they married (Union Dark Horse Comic Series). In the intervening years, Mara has risen to the rank of Jedi Master and has become the mentor of Jaina Solo. However, Mara was infected with a wasting illness by Nom Anor (New Jedi Order: Vector Prime) approximately five years after her marriage to Luke. She is battling the disease using the Force, and as a result, she is the only survivor of a 100 victims of the disease. Mara does not let her affliction get the best of her, and continues to fight the Yuzzhan Vong the best she can, while also teaching Anakin Solo (Dark Tide - Onslaught, Dark Tide - Ruin).
