A Pocket Guide to the Characters of The Phantom Menace by Ryder Windham. I have quickly read through the the novelization of The Phantom Menace. I will update this when I finish reading the novel. Affliations Special Distinctions A slave owned by the junk dealer Watto, Anakin Skywalker's mother Shmi Skywalker is bound, like all slaves, by an electronic implant that prevents escape. Hoping to free both Shmi and Anakin, Qui-Gon is only able to bargain Anakin's freedom from Watto. Although Shmi is heartbroken to lose her son, she senses Anakin's destiny is with the Jedi.
