The defect was severe enough to prevent the use of standard cures for blindness, so a VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement) was given to him when he was five years old. This device gives him a visual range that spans a major part of the electromagnetic spectrum, far beyond the normal visual spectrum of light. LaForge graduated from Star Fleet Academy in 2357, after which he was assigned to the Jovian shuttle run. There he proved his proficiency as a shuttle pilot. He later served aboard the U.S.S. Victory. He then transferred to the U.S.S. Enterprise as a flight controller, but was later promoted to lieutenant and assigned as head of engineering. LaForge's mother was captain of the U.S.S. Hera when it was lost about stardate 47215. His father is a medical doctor, rank: commander, in Star Fleet. LaForge has one sibling: a sister, Arianna.
