In aboriginal life people sleep under the stars. The night sky is a subject for many a myths. It is believed that the stars, moon and planets were once men, women and animals that flew up to the skys because of a mishap on earth. Aboriginal people see the sun as a woman who walks across the sky spreading light and warmth, the moon as a man, and when there is an eclipse of the sun it means the sun woman is uniting with the moon man.
Gnowee, the sun, was once a woman who lived upon earth when it was dark all the time and people had to walk about with the aid of bark torches. One day she left her little boy asleep while she went to dig for roots for food, whe had wandered so far that she had reached the end of the world and continuing on her wanderings, passed under it and came up on the other side. Not knowing where she was, as it was dark, she couldn't find her little boy anywhere. So she went into the sky carrying her bark torch, and still wanders across it and then under the earth looking for him.
