Women's Issues

On October 4, 2002, The Oprah Winfrey Show did a program entitled Can We Save Amina Lawal's Life? about a young Nigerian woman who has been sentenced to death by stoning for engaging in sex while unmarried. Human rights groups are helping Amina appeal the verdict. Amina is currently in hiding for fear that someone may try to take her life before her appeal process is over.

That program inspired me to dedicate a section of my website to help spread awareness of Amina Lawal's plight, and the plight of other women who are treated inhumanely around the world.

I ask everyone who reads this section to also visit the web sites for Women For Women International and Fazaldad Human Rights Institute and give whatever support you can to their causes.

I am Mr Do.

I am sedentary by nature, enjoying passive entertainment, eating when the mood takes me, and playing with my food. I try to avoid conflict, but when I'm angered, I can be a devil - if you force me to fight, I will crush you...with apples. What Video Game Character Are You?

Sir Apropos of Nothing by Peter David
Woad To Wuin by Peter David

This satirical book and its sequel revolve around Apropos, a character who realizes his friend is the "hero" of the story, and he is only the sidekick. He's not happy with this arrangement and decides to alter his destiny and usurp the role of the hero.

Knight Life by Peter David
I love Peter David's humor. In this book, Merlin finally manages to rescue King Arthur from an enchanted cave where he lay for 1000 years. Arthur resumes his political career, running for mayor of modern day New York City. Along the way he meets up with his old knight, Percival (immortal from having drunk from the Holy Grail), and the reincarnation of Queen Guinevere.

Mary Magdalene Disciple of Christ by Judith Sutherland
A powerful and enjoyable read about the life of Mary Magdalene based on historical fact and hints from Biblical sources.
The Gospel of Mary Magdalene translated by Joseph Rowe, edited by Jean-Yves Leloup
Found in 1945 at Nag Hammadi in the Egyptian desert

Harry Potter Paperback Boxed Set (Books 1-4) by J. K. Rowling
I'm bringing this over from the children's book list because more and more adults are getting into Harry Potter. I know it's hugely popular, and my usual rule of thumb is to stay away from anything that the American public embraces like this, but it would be hypocritical to conform to nonconformity, and I love Harry Potter. I defy you to read these books and not love them too.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman
I finally got around to this one. I have to agree with the crowd--not quite as enjoyable as "Neverwhere," but it's definitely a Gaiman adventure.

Wicked : The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
This was such a great concept. The biography of The Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz" from birth to her murder, making you consider the nature of good and evil in the process. You will never look at the movie in the same way again. The only thing I couldn't fully get into was Tolkien-esque detail of all the geography and politics of Oz.

Skin and Other Stories by Roald Dahl
A collection of short stories, a little darker and more twisted than his children's stories, and very engrossing.

Shadows Over Innsmouth a collection of horror stories inspired by H.P. Lovecraft

Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B movie actor by Bruce Campbell
