The 2nd Imperial Fleet

There are many fleets in the Emperor's Navy.  Each Imperial Fleet is charged with either the protection of a particular sector in the galaxy or given a specific set of objectives.  The 1st Imperial Fleet operates near Imperial Center to defend the Empire's center of power.  The 3rd Imperial Fleet operates in Hutt space, hunting pirates, interdicting smugglers, and preventing rebel activity.
The 2nd Imperial Fleet was assigned to Domino de Devastator to serve as a special tactical missions group, and for the further defense of the Deominian Cloud.  Though there is no real concern of Alliance forces penetrating the convoluted nebula surrounding the Deominian Sector, Domino's fleet is prepared for action at all times.

Command Structure

216 ships make up the entirety of the 2nd Imperial Fleet.  Within the bureaucracy of the fleet there are six battle groups.  Each battle group is commanded by an Admiral, and Grand Admiral Darin de Devastator commands them.  Within each battle group are three task forces, each with a senior Captain (there are many who hold the rank of captain in the fleet).  Each task force is made up of twelve ships.

In the loosest terms possible, the chain of command for the 2nd Imperial Fleet is:

Domino de Devastator

Alpha Battle Group
Admiral Caslin
Beta Battle Group
Admiral Seiden
Gamma Battle Group
Admiral Emago
Theta Battle Group
Admiral Brattain
Zeta Battle Group
Admiral Ta'Fras
Omega Battle Group
Admiral Delsin
Captain Gainler Captain Wocken Captain Divin Captain Rickens Captain Lavic Captain Kyler
Captain Harrung Captain Bayly Captain Hidren Captain Rasch Captain Kebbler Captain Seprine
Captain Belang Captain Poldon Captain Kogge Captain Wesel Captain Turhay Captain Tisiline

The senior Captains of each task force serve as assistants to the Admirals of the battle groups at fleet meetings and are the lowest ranked officers regularly invited to the fleet meetings.

Battle Group Mission Profiles

The battle groups within the 2nd Imperial Fleet specialize in various tasks, each with its own dedicated mission profile.  While each battle group could realistically hold its own in most situations, the mission profiles dictate which group will be asked to accomplish any given task.  Alpha, Gamma, and Omega are the primary battle groups relied upon for frontal assault, Theta's strength is planetary siege and reconnaissance, Zeta is geared for interdiction and interception, and Beta is best suited for escort and defense missions.

Alpha Battle Group - The Brawler
"Attack is a matter of knowing your adversary." - Admiral Caslin

Alpha's strength, and therefore its role within the fleet, is hard fighting.  Admiral Caslin is a courageous commander and a good officer.  His men respond well to his orders and he responds well to his orders.  In all of the fleet, no one commander has seen more action than Caslin, which has taught Caslin one important lesson; he has learned how to second guess his opponents.  He doesn't do this before an engagement, but during.  In the first few minutes of a space battle Caslin watches the action closely, observing the tactics employed by his foe.  Before the battle is more than five minutes old, he's formulated a battle plan that will leave his enemy in tatters.

Beta Battle Group - The Defender
"What discourages the enemy from attacking is the prospect of harm." - Admiral Seiden

Why is Beta considered good in defense?  This battle group could certainly be useful in an offensive role.  The key to Beta's role in the fleet lies with Admiral Seiden.  Seiden grew up learning how to defend.  His parents were members of a colony program in the outermost reaches of the Minos Cluster.  The Imperial forces in Minos at that time were negligible at best, so the colonists had to learn to defend their efforts or perish at the hands of unscrupulous raiders.  Admiral Seiden carried the lessons of his youth with him into adulthood.

Gamma Battle Group - The Commander
"Look upon your soldiers as beloved children, they will willingly die with you." - Admiral Emago

Admiral Torel Emago knows how to lead troops.  It is just that simple.  They know he is more than willing to do everything that he asks them to do, so they do it for him.  He and Admiral Delsin are considered the senior Admirals of the fleet, directly under Grand Admiral de Devastator in the chain of command.  While Delsin understands tactics much better than Emago, Emago is a charismatic commander when dealing with the entire fleet.  Gamma is also the command battle group for the fleet because the fleet flagship, Deathwail, is part of Gamma.

Theta Battle Group - The Attacker
"A surrounded enemy must believe they have a way out." - Admiral Brattain

By way of explaining the quote above, we look into Admiral Brattain's mind.  If an enemy under siege believes that there is a way to survive, they will become relaxed in their determination to fight for their lives.  Brattain is a scholar of psychology and uses his education in his military career with great results.  Theta is the fleet's siege group.  Whether laying siege to an entire planet or a pirates' hideaway, Brattain will come up with the best way to achieve surrender from the enemy.

Zeta Battle Group - The Interceptor
"When pursuing a fleeing enemy, do not hold back; if they turn to face you, watch for the ambush." - Admiral Ta'Fras

Some use their knowledge of warfare to outwit their opponent in battle.  Admiral Ta'Fras, on the other hand, has a gift for the chase and the ambush; he's good at tracking a retreating foe down.  The men and women of Zeta have shaped up into a strong ambush/interdiction force, with their role of interception coming along nicely as well.  Few can outrun Admiral Ta'Fras, and due to his able command and experience, no one will outrun Zeta Battle Group twice.

Omega Battle Group - The Planner
"Strength and weakness are a matter of formation." - Admiral Delsin

Delsin believes that preparation is the most important part of warfare.  Though not well known throughout the Navy for his tactical mind, he proved himself to Domino de Devastator and was invited (along with his entire battle group) to be attached to the 2nd Imperial Fleet.  Though Omega is generally sent into battle just as Alpha and Gamma are, Delsin is often the one who comes up with the strategies for each battle in a combat situation.

Fleet Composition

For the most part, the battle groups of the 2nd Imperial Fleet are composed in similar fashion:  36 ships in each group with one command ship, a line of destroyers, picket ships and support craft.  However, because each battle group has a dedicated mission profile, there are slight differences.  Here is a breakdown, by battle group, of the composition of the 2nd Imperial Fleet.

Noteworthy Vessels of the Fleet

Admiral Caslin's command ship - Super Star Destroyer Hand of Desolation:  ship contains 38,000 troops (including a full corp of stormtroopers), 50 AT-ST's and 25 AT-AT's, and other various ground assault vehicles.  2 wings of starfighters (12 squadrons) make up the fighter complement:  2 squadrons of TIE Defenders, 2 squadrons of TIE Avengers, 5 squadrons of TIE Interceptors, 3 Squadrons of Scimitar Assault Bombers.  In addition, a small flotilla of shuttles and drop ships sit in the hangars.

Admiral Emago's command ship, Flagship for the 2nd Imperial Fleet - Eclipse Super Star Destroyer Deathwwailship contains 150,000 troops (including a full division of stormtroopers), a COMPforce assault battalion, 200 AT-ST's and 100 AT-AT's, and other various ground assault vehicles.  Nearly ten wings of starfighters (58 squadrons, to be precise) make up the fighter complement:  1 squadron of the Galactastar "Prelude" M3 fighter, 10 squadrons of TIE Defenders, 10 squadrons of TIE Enforcers, 10 squadrons of TIE Avengers, 19 squadrons of TIE Interceptors, 8 Squadrons of Scimitar Assault Bombers.  In addition, Emago's personal shuttle, a Sentinel-class shuttle, as well as various shuttles and drop ships sit in the hangars.

Admiral Brattain's Siege platform - Torpedo Sphere Fist of de DevastatorThis craft was commissioned by Domino de Devastator when he was given command of the 2nd Imperial Fleet.  Assigning each battle group to their specific mission profiles, Domino knew that the best way to lay siege would be to use a weapon designed for that purpose.  Thanks to Admiral Brattain's experience and the weapon's firepower, the Fist of de Devastator can pound through almost any planetary shield.  In the event that Theta Battle Group is sent on a mission that involves siege tactics, the torpedo sphere will remain within the protective boundaries of the Deominian Cloud (the crew will keep everything in shape in case they are needed).
Because planetary siege is not too terribly common, crew members rotate throughout the fleet after serving on the torpedo sphere for 6 months.

Admiral Delsin's command ship - Super Star Destroyer Pride of de Devastator:  ship contains 38,000 troops (including a full corp of stormtroopers), 50 AT-ST's and 25 AT-AT's, and other various ground assault vehicles.  2 wings of starfighters (12 squadrons) make up the fighter complement:  3 squadrons of TIE Defenders, 1 squadron of TIE Enforcers, 5 squadrons of TIE Interceptors, 3 Squadrons of Scimitar Assault Bombers.  In addition, Delsin's personal shuttle, a Sentinel-class shuttle, as well as a small flotilla of shuttles and drop ships sit in the hangars.
