Admiral Ackbar
- Admiral Ackbar was one of the first of the Mon Calamari to be captured and
utilized by a slave by the Empire. As a slave he was an interpreter and
personal servant for a fleet officer until he was presented to Grand Moff
Tarkin. In the role of loyal servant, he never missed an opportunity to
learn from Tarkin, discussing everything from military tactics to the command
structure of the Empire. He studied military documents and was one of
the first to hear, from Tarkin's own mouth, about the Grand Moff's "Rule
by Fear" doctrine. It was from Tarkin that Ackbar also learned of
the rebellion against the Empire.
- As Tarkin was being transported to the newly completed Death Star, rebels
attacked the transport. Following a hard fought battle with Admiral
Motti's Star Destroyer, the rebels escaped with Ackbar, who's days as Tarkin's
servant were over.
- Ackbar pledged his service to the Rebel Alliance and returned to Mon
Calamari to enlist the help of that entire world. The people of Mon
Calamari had worked tirelessly to refit their enormous cruisers with weaponry
and had been successful for several years in keeping the Empire at bay.
Ackbar convinced the people of his world to build even more ships and weapons
for the Alliance. The Mon Calamari not only devoted time to producing
ships for the war effort, they devoted themselves to serve as crew for the
ships.
- Ackbar was named a commander in the Aliance naval force, but his was a gift
of creation. He gathered several engineering minds and they worked to
create the B-Wing fighter. This was known as the Shantipole
project. Shortly after the first B-Wings were delivered to the Alliance,
Ackbar was promoted to Admiral by Mon Mothma.
- Although
widely recognized as a fine tactician, it is his organizational and
administrative abilities that make Ackbar an outstanding leader. He is known
for being rather conservative in battle strategy, but this aspect of his
personality is counterbalanced within the fleet's command structure by the
innovative impetuosity of his young officers and the aggressive nature of
General Madine.
- A case in point is the Battle
of Endor. When the Death
Star surprisingly went operational and began systematically destroying the
Rebel Fleet's most powerful vessels, Ackbar's first instinct was to call off
the attack. But Lando
Calrissian pleaded with him to continue by engaging the Imperial Star
Destroyers, in the hope that the Death Star wouldn't be able to open up on
them without hitting Imperial ships.
- For all of his conservatism, Ackbar saw the logic in Calrissian's
radical plan and acted accordingly. The gamble paid off.
- The battle over Endor proved to everyone that Mon
Mothma's choice for command of the fleet was perfect. It was the Alliance's
shining moment, and Ackbar deserves much of the credit.
- Ackbar continued to command the Rebel Fleet in the years following Endor,
but he also had political responsibilities. This made him a target in
the watchful eyes of the Bothan politician, Borsk Fey'lya. In meetings
of the Provisional Council and the ruling Inner Council, the debates between
the Bothan and the Mon Calamari were considered legendary.
- During the crisis of Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign to rebuild the Empire
(read the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn if you haven't already), Borsk
Fey'lya accused Ackbar of treason. Thrawn had planted false evidence in
Ackbar's credit accounts and Fey'lya found the evidence and implicated the Mon
Calamari for the credit issues as well as supposed military mismanagement.
- Ackbar was cleared through evidence gathered by an employee of the smuggler
chief Talon Karrde. He resumed his duties and helped lead the fleet to
victory over Thrawn's forces at the Bilbringi Shipyards.
- As commander of the Rebel
Fleet, Ackbar has one of the most important and demanding jobs in the
Alliance. The fleet is the Rebellion's most valuable asset and its most
important tool to challenge the overwhelming might of the Empire. Admiral
Ackbar was the natural choice for fleet commander.
