Battle Zone Technology: Imperial Capital Ships
CLASS B CAPITAL SHIP SCALE
- Carrack Cruiser: An old yet reliable design, the Carrack-class Light Cruiser has found its way back into wide use in the Imperial navy. It has a mission profile of support craft, and is generally deployed for use against small capital ships, such as corvettes. It utilizes several sets of laser cannons to fend off starfighters, since it only carries four TIE fighters (mounted externally). The ship has a modular design, and compartmental life-support systems in the event of a hull breaching. These are among the fastest cruisers in any fleet, due to the powerful sublight engines it possesses. A crew of 1,092 is required for maximum efficiency (85 are gunners), but with a command skill of 50 can operate with a skeleton crew of 500 people. 142 troops serve on board a Carrack in the event that a boarding operation becomes necessary.
It has a hyperdrive rating of 1, a maneuverability rating of 45/45, and can fly at 1050 in planetary atmosphere. For weaponry, it has 10 heavy turbolasers (fired separately, damage is 350), 20 laser cannons (fired separately, damage is 100), and five tractor beam projectors (strength rating of 200). The Carrack Cruiser's hull strength rating is 250, and the shield strength rating is 135. Cost is 320 points.
- Dreadnaught Cruiser: This refitted version ancient Old Republic heavy cruiser is still in use in outlying portions of the Empire. It is 600 meters long, and requires a crew 16,200 (includes 97 gunners), but with a "Command" skill of 45 can function with a skeleton crew of 9,000. It carries 3,000 troops for internal defense. It has been refitted with a flight deck, and can carry 1 squadron (12 ships) of starfighters. It has a hyperdrive rating of 2, is exceptionally slow at sublight
speeds and has a maneuverability rating of 60, and is not atmosphere capable. The weapons complement consists of 10 turbolaser batteries (damage is 350 each), 10 turbolaser cannons (damage is 100 each), and 20 quad turbolaser cannons (damage is 200 each). The hull and shield strength ratings are 265 and 120, respectively. It is not unheard of for the Rebel Alliance to obtain these nominally Imperial vessels, as everyone essentially inherited them from the Old Republic. Cost is 350 points.
- Hera-class Attack Cruiser: The Hera-class Attack Cruiser is designed for open-field space combat. It is a 221 meter long flattened cylinder with a tuning fork style front and two downward sloping, swept wing fins at the rear. The engines are in the fins. It requires a crew of 560 (includes gunners) to operate, and carries 72 troops for internal security and boarding operations. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1, a maneuverability rating of 40, and is not atmosphere capable. Normal space speed and maneuverability are excellent for a cruiser class vessel. Its hanger bay can accommodate
one squadron of 12 starfighters and 2 shuttle class ships of which one is typically a Gamma-class shuttle. The weapons complement consists of 6 heavy turbolaser batteries (damage is 350), 4 heavily armored concussion missile triple-tube racks in turrets (damage is 450 per missile), 20 laser cannons (damage 250 each), 2 tractor beam projectors (beam thrust of 200 each), and 2 Phalanx repeating turbolasers, one on the tip of each fin (damage is 120). Absent an override, firing is controlled by the Imperial Firestorm system, capable of detecting, tracking, prioritizing and targeting up to 200 simultaneous threats. The Phalanx repeating turbolaser rotates firing among 16 barrels (the barrels don't move, just the power) in overlapping cycles so that a near continuous stream of laser fire can be spewed at a target, providing the opportunity to adjust aim until the target is eliminated. Its low nominal damage rating is quite adequate to detonate a missile or torpedo, and the continuous stream is the equivalent of a myriad of shots seriatim so this weapon can actually be used can-opener style on heavier targets like starfighters and gunships. Still, it is specially calibrated for missiles and torpedoes. The hull and shield strength ratings are 250 and 200, respectively. Cost is 400 points. (design by Admiral
Kanaris)
- Heracles-class Frigate: This sleek modern Imperial frigate design relies primarily on missiles for offensive weaponry. It is a 134 meter long flattened cylinder with a flare at the front (the command deck), and two downward sloping, swept wing fins at the rear. The engines are in the fins. It requires a crew of 300 (includes gunners) to operate, and carries 36 troops for internal security. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1, a maneuverability rating of 45/60, and can travel at 850 km/h under most atmospheric conditions. It is a relatively fast vessel, and has good maneuverability for deep-space combat. There is a launch bay on bottom between the two fins able to accommodate either
6 starfighters or 3 shuttle class ships. The weapons complement consists of 1 heavy turbolaser battery (damage is 350), 2 heavily armored concussion missile triple-tube racks in turrets (damage is 450 per missile), 6 laser cannons (damage 250 each), 1 tractor beam projector (beam thrust of 200 each), and 2 Phalanx repeating turbolasers, one on the tip of each fin (damage is 120). The hull and shield strength ratings are 200 and 150, respectively. Cost is 230 points. (design by Admiral
Kanaris)
- Imperial Escort Carrier: This ship was designed by Kuat Drive Yards to transport fighters and shuttles. It looks like a men's electric shaver. Fighter capacity is a full wing (12 squadrons of
12 fighters). By Imperial policy, at least one squadron should be TIE Interceptors. Additional bays can carry up to 6 shuttles. The 500 meter long Imperial Escort Carrier requires a crew of 3,505 (includes 20 gunners), but with a "Command" skill of 45 can function with a skeleton crew of 1,500 (those numbers include personnel to operate the fighters and shuttles). It carries 800 troops. Its rather light weapons complement is 10 twin laser cannon (damage is 150 if fire linked, 100 if fired separately), so prudent captains remain outside of the combat zone. It has a hyperdrive rating of 1,
a maneuverability rating of 45, and is not atmosphere capable. The hull strength rating is 350, and the shield strength rating is 100. Base cost is 230 unloaded or 320 with 5 squadrons of basic TIE Fighters and 1 squadron of TIE Interceptors. A character must be Imperial to obtain one of these ships.
- Interdictor-class Cruiser: The last name in hyperspace interruption, Sienar Fleet Systems Immobilizer 418 has the ability to pull a ship out of hyperspace travel. Interdictor's are used as screening vessels. Just one of these in a common hyperspace route with their gravity well projectors can prevent any ship from getting through. 2,807 men are required to operate these vessels at maximum efficiency (24 are gunners), though with a command skill of 50 a skeleton crew of 1500 can operate it. 30 troopers are stationed on board for retrieval and boarding party exercises. The Interdictor cannot enter planetary atmosphere. It has a hyperdrive rating of
2 and has a maneuverability rating of 50. Offensively it has 20 quad laser cannons (damage is 200 each) and its four gravity well projectors (the effect of these is that all hyperspace travel is prevented). The hull strength rating is 250 and the shield strength rating is 150. Cost is 375.
- Lancer-class Frigate: Designed by Kuat Drive Yards, this 250 meter long capital ship was intended to combat superior Rebel starfighters after the disaster at the Battle of Yavin. Subject to caveats about being slower and less maneuverable at sublight speeds than fighters and lacking the heavy firepower required to duke it out alone against enemy capital ships (think of this as a punching bag for Rebel capital ships if unsupported), it performs that function well when serving as close escort for a major capital ships. It requires a crew of 850 (includes 40 gunners), but with a "Command" skill of 45 can function with a skeleton crew of 375. It carries 40 troopers for internal defense. Its weapons complement is 20 quad laser cannon (damage is 200 each), each located on an elevated tower mount for increased fire arc and equipped with an advanced targeting mechanism specifically calibrated for anti-fighter defense. The defense grid and integrated fire control is excellent when operating, but often down due to excessive complexity. Plus, the quad lasers are divided into two banks of 10, each served by a separate generator. If a generator fails and auxiliary power cannot be shunted in, that weapons bank goes off-line. The Lancer Frigate has a small internal hanger bay that can accommodate two shuttles. It has a hyperdrive rating of 1,
a maneuverability rating of 50, and is not atmosphere capable. The hull strength rating is 180, and the shield strength rating is 135. Cost is 215 points. A character must be Imperial to obtain one of these ships.
- Punisher-class Monitor: This heavily armored and shielded Monitor is just the thing for those grinding, slugfest combat situations. It is 940 meters long, and has a fat (compared to the standard proportionately thin) Imperial wedge design. The bridge and shields have been recessed into the hull (and heavily armored); there is no conning tower. The hull consists of layers, including two which are non-conductive to ion particles, so that the Monitor is substantially resistant to even planetary-grade ion batteries. Further, systems are segregated, use of advanced, delicate electronics has been minimized (for protection, not to save costs, right?) and key circuitry has been additionally insulated so that ion hits that do damage have a limited area of impact. The Monitor requires a crew of 5,980 (includes gunners) to operate, but with a command skill of 50 can operate with a skeleton crew of 2,000. It carries 1,400 troopers to repel boarders. It is slow due to heavy mass. Despite exceptionally powerful military grade engines, the hyperdrive rating is 3,
a maneuverability rating of 65, and couldn't catch a stock freighter in normal space. It is not atmosphere capable. There is a hanger deck for two shuttles. The weapons complement consists of 14 heavy turbolaser batteries (damage is 450 each), most in turrets, 18 heavy turbolaser cannons (damage is 350 each), and 24 turret mounted quad laser cannon (damage is 250 each). The hull strength rating is 420, and the shield strength rating is 400. It has been rumored that certain captains, acting without sanction from Imperial High Command, have slopped reinforced permacrete on top of the normal armor to provide additional, cheap shielding, and ordered anti-personnel mines and cluster traps placed on the exterior. Cost is 400 points. (design by
Kanaris)
- Starlifter Transport: The 600 meter long Imperial Starlifter is a high capacity military grade transport used to ferry troops and equipment from system to system or to support planetary invasions. It requires a crew of 4,282 to operate (includes gunners). The Starlifter looks like a smoother version of the Dreadnought Cruiser with side-stripe slot hanger bays, though the shell configuration is about the only thing it has in common with the antiquated cruiser. The crew areas of the ship are separated from the troop and cargo holds by shielded strong points and weapons emplacements operated from the crew side that ultimately back to the command deck and engineering. The Starlifter can carry a full Battlegroup (4 regiments) of ground troops and has 8 segregated cargo holds with capacity for all of their military vehicles and support equipment. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1, a maneuverability rating of 55, and is not atmosphere capable. Starlifters typically carry 32 "Brick Drop" or other assault shuttles, 6 Carrier Wing Transports, and may also carry up to 3 squadrons (12 ships per squadron) of starfighters with ground assault support capability. The hanger bays have internal shielding, including shielded pens around designated landing zones, and defensive strong points with mounted laser cannons and heavy blasters (not included in external weapons complement listed below) intended to thwart any effort to capture a Starlifter by ramming the hanger bays or sneaking onto the ship when a lander returns. The weapons complement consists of 20 turbolasers (damage is 250 each), 14 concussion missile tubes (damage is 250 each), 16 quad laser cannons (damage is 200 each) and 8 heavy duty tractor beam projectors (beam thrust is 300 each) that are mostly used to maneuver the shuttles and transports. The hull and shield strength ratings are 200 and 50, respectively. Cost is 350 points. (design by Admiral
Kanaris)
- Stinger-class Light Cruiser: The 400 meter long Stinger-class Light Cruiser, manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, was designed to provide the Empire with a capital ship platform for high speed operations (e.g., the hit-and-fade mission popularized by the Rebels). It requires a crew of 975 (includes gunners), but with a "Command" skill of 45 can function with a skeleton crew of 500. It carries 250 troops. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1, a maneuverability rating of 60, and is not atmosphere capable. The weapon complement consists of 10 heavy turbolasers (damage is 350 each), 10 ion cannon (damage is 150 each), 10 quad laser cannons (damage is 250 each), 4 proton torpedo launchers (damage is 450 each; magazine of 4 rounds each), and 4 tractor beam projectors. (beam thrust of 250 each). It has a hanger deck that carries 1 Lambda-class Shuttle and 12
starfighters. The hull and shield strength ratings are 250 and 125, respectively. Cost is 390 points. (Concept credit Galactic Conquest
Sim, BZ implementation by Kanaris)
- Victory Star Destroyer: Designed at the tale end of the Clone Wars, it never saw much service during that time. The VSD has proven itself to be a powerful part of the Imperial Navy. It is 900 meters long. It requires 4,798 men to operate plus 402 gunners, but with a command skill of 45 it can operate with a skeleton crew of 1,785. It carries 2,040 troopers.
The hangar bay fits two squadrons (12 fighters/squadron). It can enter planetary atmosphere, and it travels at 800 km/h under those conditions. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1 and a maneuverability rating of 45/75. It has 20 turbolaser batteries (damage is 350 each), 20 double turbolaser cannons (damage is 250), 80 concussion missile tubes (damage is 450 each), and 10 tractor beam projectors (tractor strength is 200 each). The hull strength rating is 200 and the shield strength rating is 175. Cost is 390.
- Victory II-class Star Destroyer: Designed by Rendili StarDrive, the Imperial wedge-shaped, 900 meter long Victory II Star Destroyer was designed primarily for space combat (chief current use is sector patrols) versus the planetary assault role of its predecessor. The Victory II has powerful Hoersch-Kessel engines that materially improve sublight speed and maneuverability. There are also 10 ion cannons (damage is 200 each) and 10 enhanced tractor beam projectors (tractor beam strength rating is 300 each) that, used in combination, can disrupt the performance of an enemy ship, leaving it vulnerable to the VSD II's main weaponry of 20 turbolaser batteries (damage is 350 each), 20 double turbolaser cannons (damage is 240 each) and 80 concussion missile tubes (damage is 450 each). It requires a crew of 6,107 (includes 386 gunners) to operate, but with a Command skill of 45 can operate with a skeleton crew of 2,100. It carries 1,600 troopers.
The hangar bay fits two squadrons (12 fighters/squadron). It can enter planetary atmosphere, and travels at 900 km/h under those conditions. It has a hyperdrive rating of
1 and a maneuverability rating of 45/75. The hull strength rating is 250 and the shield strength rating is 170. Cost is 410. A character must be Imperial and a special favorite of the Admiralty to be obtain one of these ships as they are in heavy demand and scarce production.
- Victory III-class Star Destroyer: Designed by Rendili StarDrive for space superiority missions, this third incarnation of the popular Victory line addresses the need for enhanced anti-fighter capability. The hull is a traditional basic 900 meter long Victory-class Imperial wedge design, crammed with additional weaponry. Essential corridors and necessary workspaces were left intact. The extra space was created by downsizing crew and officer quarters (crew must now share bunks in shifts), and eliminating some of the dramatic visages incorporated in Imperial designs intended to impress diplomatic visitors. (In other words, this ship skips the flab.) There are 10 ion cannons (damage is 200 each), 10 enhanced tractor beam projectors (tractor beam strength rating is 300 each), 20 turbolaser batteries (damage is 350 each), 20 double turbolaser cannons (damage is 240 each), 80 concussion missile tubes (damage is 450 each), and 20 turret mounted quad laser cannon (damage is 200) for anti-fighter defense, each equipped with an advanced targeting mechanism. The VSD III requires a crew of 6,127 (includes 406 gunners) to operate, but with a Command skill of 45 can operate with a skeleton crew of 2,200. It carries 1,500 troopers.
The hangar bay fits two squadrons (12 fighters/squadron). It has a hyperdrive rating of
1, a maneuverability rating of 45/75, and can travel at 850 km/h in atmospheric conditions. The hull strength rating is 250 and the shield strength rating is 170. Cost is 450.
