The Amazons

Amazons are among the strangest of all humans.  They are physically the same as the humans of the Old World, despite living deep in an equatorial rainforest where the only other native humans are the small dark-skinned Pygmies.  An Amazon could walk the streets of any Old World town without appearing alien, if suitably dressed in the costume of the land it is in.

One thing that truly sets Amazons apart is the fact their population is almost completely female.  This came about due to genetic manipulation by the Old Slann.  The Amazons have been adapted to reproduce pathenogenetically.  The process is controlled by the Amazonian Sisterhood, a powerful group of Priestesses who use various natural drugs to induce pregnancy in their subjects and to determine the gender of the child.  Amazons can reproduce through normal means, but this very rarely happens, due to the introverted and self-involved nature of Amazon society.

Amazon culture is a direct creation of the Old Slann, the powerful, mystical and technological race that once ruled the planet.  The Old Slann favored the Amazons above all others, teaching them magic and philosophy.  They also taught the Amazons to use magical weapons and complicated war machines.

Amazonia is ruled by the powerful religious organization called the Sisterhood.  The Sisterhood is somewhat like a monastic order in its structure and hierarchy.  As Novices the young cult members live cloistered lives, of study, ritual, and work.  They only acquire power and responsibility as they grow older and wiser.

Amazons are a proud xenophobic race.  They guard their culture and independence fiercely.  They have little patience with other races.  Amazons will sometimes ally with Lizardmen, but they are just as likely to be at war with them.  The Pygmies are often used as auxiliaries by the Amazons and they seem to be the only race the Amazons have regular contact with.

The inner sanctums of the Sisterhood are guarded by fanatical warriors called the Kalim Devouts.  These Guards will often be armed with the deadly Arcane Rods of the Old Slann.  These are truly ancient weapons from before the time of the Fall of the Old Slann Empire and the coming of Chaos.  There are also the lesser Temple Guards known as the Kalim.  Both the Kalim and the Kalim Devouts are users of Koka, which gives them strange abilities.  They can go for long periods without sleep, they can overcome great pain, and they gain extraordinary quickness.  Some warriors are so fanatical that they go into a berserk frenzy during battle.

The Sisterhood has powerful Sorceresses among their number and they make formidable foes.  They can wield powerful spells in combat and use spells of travel.

The Amazons also use the beasts of the jungles in their armies and often have mystical beasts accompanying their armies to battle.

The Amazons worship a goddess known only as the Mother.  The Mother is the giver and the taker of life.  All aspects of Amazon society are controlled by the Sisterhood in the Mother's name.  Even warfare is looked upon as a religious duty and battle as an act of devotion.  Due to this every Amazon strives to be the perfect warrior or priestess.  Every Amazon is a warrior in addition to any other trade they might have.

The most feared of the Sisterhood are the Quaesitorii (the Questioners) and the Quaesitio (the Questioning).  The Quaesitorii are skilled torturers and it is said they can make even the very stones talk.

For enemies the Sisterhood can reach by no other means, there are the Sicarii, the Cult of Assassins who are fanatically loyal and trained from birth to be cold efficient killers.
