The Crimson Eagles are the meanest, hardest fighting free company to ever fight in the ongoing wars of the city states of Tilea or in the wars fought against incursions of Undead and Chaos Dwarfs in the Border Princes.  They were first formed by Captain Kalin to fight against the Undead invasion of the Border Marches and the Border Princes.   Since that time they have fought many campaigns amongst the Border Princes and the city-states of Tilea.  They have also fought in expeditions against the Caliphs of Araby.  The Crimson Eagles were formed from condemned men saved from the gallows to fight against the hordes of Undead.  They were taken to the gallows and let drop as if they were actually being hung with the rope around their neck, only it was not secured at the other end, so they fell to the ground.  The men chosen were read by a powerful sorceress to make sure the right ones were chosen.  They were taken to a secret base and trained intensively for several months to fight in the way of the legions.  They have gained the reputation of being totally fearless in battle, as they have already been hung for crimes they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  They fight with cold precision that is gained by knowing you have nothing to lose.

At present their Captain hires them out to fight in the wars of the different nations, but he will not hire out to Chaos, or to evil lords.  There must be an element of the just in any cause he takes up.

Kalin, Captain of the Crimson Eagles...........371 points including magic items

It is said by many that Kalin must be of Elven blood as he has fought for several decades in battles all over the Old World.  It is said that he has even fought in battles in far Cathay and in the mysterious Southlands.  What is known is that he is a master tactician and he has created the finest free company in the known world.   His reputation is such that he draws the highest bids for the services of his company and himself.  He is a tall, slender man of dark hair and fair skin, with the lightest eyes anyone has ever looked upon.  His eyes can turn as cold as ice when he is confronted, or they can warm to the colour of a spring sky.  He is an enigmatic figure, and no one knows exactly from where he came.  He has friends at the highest levels in Courts ranging from that of the Emperor to the Princes of Tilea and beyond.   Kalin has fought Undead, Chaos, and many other strange creatures in his career, and he has a reputation for being both very good at what he does and being very lucky.

Crimson Eagles Special Rules

The Crimson Eagles, when fighting mounted, may use the Lance formation.

When dismounted, they may form a shieldwall with the archers in a second rank able to fire over the first rank.  The formation for this would be a rank of Troopers, a rank of Archers, and further ranks of Troopers and Archers.  When they fight this way, all ranks up to four count for rank bonus.  Also, when fighting this way, hits are randomised between the Troopers and the Archers if they are from missile fire.  The shieldwall formation gives a +1 to armour saves.  It doubles all penalties for difficult terrain.

The unit can also fight in skirmish formation if need be.

You must have figures for both mounted and dismounted Troopers.

Pilum

The pilum is thrown just before contact is made whenever the Troopers charge or are charged, reulting in hand-to-hand combat.  Work this out during the hand-to-hand combat phase before any other combat, no matter who has the higher Initiative. Use the Trooper's Ballistic Skill for hit determination. If a hit roll is successfully made, the effects will be as follow: The weapon will cause a S4 hit with a -1 save mod. If the figure saves, roll a d6 and if a 5 or 6 is rolled, then the enemy's armor class is worsened by 1, i.e. a 4+ will become a 5+.

Horn Bow

The Horn Bow is a powerful recurved composite bow of a type used by the Nomads of the Great Northern Steppes.  It is designed for maximum penetrating power and to be used by a mounted archer.  It has a max range of 30", and hits with a Strength 4 with a -1 save modifier.
