Henri was the youngest son of a minor noble of Bretonnia, without prospects of any inheritance. He joined the crew of a merchant ship as a youth, and went to sea. When war broke out between Bretonnia and the Empire, the captain of the ship turned to privateering. During these years, Henri learned seamanship, navigation, and the tactics needed to be a successful sea raider. When the war was over, Henri was unable to return to the placid life of a merchantman. He had amassed a large enough stake to purchase and outfit a fast galley and to arm and crew it, and he sailed his ship to the southern seas and began a raider's life, making Sartosa his home port. Henri rose through the Brotherhood through his many exploits and his reputation as a successful sea raider. He has a reputation as being a strong disciplinarian, but also being fair in his treatment of his mates and crew. His ship, The Black Swan, is feared by fat merchants who sail the southern seas, and he and his men have made many successful attacks on the coast of Estalia, and they have taken many fat prizes that fly the flag of Magritta and other merchant cities. He has made a practice of not attacking any Bretonnian ship or those of Remas or Marigliano, so he and his crew are welcome in these states and they have taken refuge in them on many occasions. Henri is still a young man, at the height of his career.
Henri is a cultured aristocrat, but he is also a product of the waterfront and of his years at sea. He is both a fine swordsman and a fine shot. He is at home on both a swaying deck and in a fine drawing room. He is popular with his crew, and with the other captains of the Brotherhood. He is tall, with dark hair and complexion, and steel coloured eyes, with a savour scar running along his left jawbone.
