Well Saturday a friend and I ran a demo at a local store.
Forces were:
HE:
Silver Helms
General on dragon
Hero
2 x Spearmen
2 x Archers
Bolt thrower
So the boxed set plus a dragon
Undead:
3 x Spearmen
3 x Archers
2 x Cavalry
Bolt thrower
Bone giant
2 x Liche priest (no magic unfortunately)
Tomb king
Played 4-5 quick games with the undead winning a few and the elfs winning a few. The undead were hampered by a lack of magic, but the HE were stuck have 100 points tied up with a dragon for the general.
Lots of fun, we skipped some rules and usually tossed a die when we were confused or couldn't remember a rule.
Ended up with 5-6 army box sets being bought, with others saying that they would wait for the orcs or chaos.
Then on Sunday I played some more against a dwarf force.
My force:
1000 points
Tomb king
Liche priest-Rod of Repetition
Liche priest-Ring of Magic
2 x Chariot, one had Sword of Might, one had Sword of Cleaving
4x Bowmen
2x Infantry
1 Bone thrower
1 Skull chucka
1 Carrion
6 Break point
Facing
1000 points
General
Runesmith, Staff of Spellbinding
2x Warrior
2x Ranger
2x Trollslayer
1 Gyrocopter
1 Flamecannon
4 Break point
I had picked my army to see how good shooty can be, the answer is very good against a primarily infantry force.
I used the chariots and carrion to pick on units that were confused or that had lost a stand, one game was close as I lost 5 units, but the other two were walks with me losing just a single unit in each game.
The dwarfs low break point really hurt them, since I could make 1-1 trades and win on attrition.
The spells I primarily used were the shooting one and doom and despair to prevent charges. Add in the skullchuckas confusion bonus and the games were pretty decisive.
We used 6 pieces of terrain, 2 hills, 2 woods, and 2 wooded hills.
The flame cannon was never decisive as I managed to shoot it up in 2 games and decided to trade my carrion unit for the flame cannon in the 3rd game to get the 3rd unit. The gyrocopter was so-so, I suspect it could be better in bigger games but in this one, it ended up out in the open and shot up.
The rangers earned a new respect from me, pursuing and destroying a chariot unit in the 1st game. I charged them on a hill and used the tomb kings blessing, 18 attacks, with a reroll for one and I inflicted 1 wound. I lost fell back and was destroyed in ensuing pursuits. Kind of shocking really.
The chariots and carrion were great, but the MVP was definitely the skullchucka. Every game he grabbed a hill and proceeeded to bomb the enemy from afar, forcing confusion and destroying the occasional stand. Very nice.
