13. Battle Lines

Summary

Kai Opaka unexpectedly comes to the station and asks to be taken through the wormhole. Sisko, Bashir, and Kira oblige her with a tour of the Gamma Quadrant, but then their runabout crashes on a moon inhabited by two warring factions. Kai Opaka dies in the impact, yet is resurrected. Bashir finds that anyone who dies there becomes infected with nanite-like microbes which can resurrect the body indefinitely, but are tied to that particular moon, so that the person will die permanently if he or she leaves. Bashir can remove the microbes, but the factions' leaders are only interested in it as a way to obliterate their enemies forever, so once rescued, the DS9 officers leave things as they are. Opaka accepts her exile in the hope of bringing peace.
