57. Past Tense, Part I

Summary

The DS9 officers have gone to Earth for a symposium. Sisko, Dax, and Bashir beam down to find themselves in the year 2024. Sisko and Bashir, lacking money or ID, are put in a Sanctuary District, where the homeless are walled off in slums; Dax is found and helped by a businessman, Chris Brynner. Sisko realizes that the Bell Riots are about to occur. These riots were named for one Gabriel Bell, whose death after protecting some hostages sparked massive reforms that made the Federation possible. But Bell is killed before the riots, helping Sisko and Bashir in a fight. As the riots begin, Sisko takes Bell's identity.
