59. Life Support

Summary

A. A shuttle carrying Kai Winn and Vedek Bareil to a secret meeting with the Cardassian legate Turrel for peace talks has been damaged in an accident. Bareil is gravely injured and dies, but Bashir manages to revive him with a dose of radiation. This impairs the blood flow to his organs, however, yet Bareil refuses stasis, wanting to stay functional to aid Winn with the treaty negotiations. Bashir tries a risky drug called vasokin, which works but damages Bareil's organs as fast as Bashir can replace them. The treaty is signed at last between Bajor and Cardassia. Bashir is able to replace half of Bareil's brain with a positronic implant, but draws the line at replacing the other half. Kira stays with Bareil as he dies.

B. Jake and Nog quarrel over Nog's behavior toward women, but Jake comes up with a creative way of reconciling.
