66. Improbable Cause

Summary

After Garak's shop is destroyed in an explosion, Odo's investigation leads to an assassin whose ship explodes as Odo and Garak are following. It was the work of the Romulans, who had sent the assassin in the first place. An informant tells Odo of odd Romulan activity in the Badlands, and that five of Garak's fellow former Obsidian Order agents have been murdered. Odo figures out that Garak blew up his own shop to make Odo investigate the growing situation. Garak fears for his ex-superior, Enabran Tain, who has disappeared. He and Odo head for Tain's safehouse, but are captured by a Romulan ship. On it is Tain, who was behind the murders of the ex-Obsidian Order agents. The buildup in the Orias system (see "Defiant", above) is a joint operation of the Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar; its purpose is to destroy the Founders. Garak joins Tain.
