Anime series are varied in plot and animation style, but around the 1970's a lot of Anime was about giant fighting robots piloted by humans to protect the earth from evil alien invaders. There was Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Daimos and many more.
My very first encounter with Anime was with the series Voltes V. Here, five brave youngsters defended the Earth against alien invaders called Boazanseijin. These five younsters pilot special vehicles that can combine to create a super robot--Voltes V. The creators of Voltes V did a good job in the series' storyline. I'd like to tell you the whole story of Voltes V but then that would spoil all the fun!
A few years later, a new fighting robot came into the scene -- Voltron. Two series were made. One featured the Voltron near universe(the vehicles) and the other featured Voltron far universe(the lions). In both series, different vehicles/lions would combine to form Voltron so as to fight off the evil invaders and spread peace throughout the galaxy. I believe that the Voltron lions was the better series. Why? The vehicles team had 15 vehicles and all 15 vehicles are needed to form Voltron. So this means that if just one vehicle is missing, 14 well trained fighters in fully equipped and fully armed space vehicles cannot defeat one robot monster! In addition, I think that the Voltron lions series had a better storyline and characters -- not all the villains used to be villains.
Anyway, the two Voltrons seem to be related because all the Voltron vehicle/lion pilots came from one academy and one pilot in the Voltron lions (Pidge--Green Lion) is the brother of the youngest Voltron vehicle pilots. (I forgot the name of the guy!)

Another old anime is G-force. Yes, I'm sure some of you folks out there will say,:"Hey wait a minute, G-force or Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman (Science
Ninja Team Gatchaman) is NOT a robot anime. Well, since I'm talking about plots here .... Gatchaman and Voltes V have similar plots but Gatchaman doesn't quite measure up to Voltes V's storyline and characters. Both were created during the 1970's and as such the animators dressed their characters into bellbottom pants, tight tees and lots of ruffles.
