Fishing Farm
|Ocarina of Time| |Home Page|
In an eastern corner of Lake Hylia, there is a hut on an island. Behind this closed door is a sectioned-off pond where, for 20 Rupees, you can enjoy a spot of fishing. You'll not only be able to boost your ego by catching really big fish, but you'll also be able to get special rewards for catching certain fishies.
One thing worth noting: the mass of the fish is expressed in pounds, but this unit isn't changed for countries which use metric units (a mathematically-minded friend of mine says only third-world countries haven't decided to convert to the metric system). I'll post the conversion factors up here soon.

Young Link: 11 pounds without a sinking lure.
Adult Link: 20 pounds without a sinking lure.
Reaching the Farm and Getting Started
You'll note that you can't simply walk over dry land or through shallow water to reach the Fishing Farm. Young Link has to swim there, and he can do this at any time during the game. If you wish to visit the farm as Adult Link, however, the process is a little more difficult. If as Adult Link you wish to visit the Farm, then you'll need:-
the Scarecrow's Song and the Hookshot or
-
the Water Medallion
Once you've reached the entrance to the farm, just go in and talk to the guy at the counter to pay your money and get a fishing rod. From there, you then have to cast your rod and try to get a catch. Here's how to do it:-
Run around the pond using the Control Stick until you've come to a good spot. You can Z-Target fish to keep them within sight if you really want to.
-
Press the B button to cast the line.
-
Press B to give the line a tug and attract the fish.
-
If a fish grabs your rod, press down on the Control Stick and A to set the hook (make the game know you want to catch this fish).
-
The fish will struggle around. Hold A to reel him in and B to keep tugging the line. Hold the Control Stick left or right, depending on which way the fish is facing.
-
If you're skilled and persistent, you'll be able to bring the fish in. When you do, you have to choose whether or not you want to keep the fish.
While you've got the line extended, you can press Z to change the camera position. Make sure you keep the camera as close to the lure as possible so you're able to see which way to pull the line. Remember that if you don't hold the Control Stick in the right direction, you risk the line snapping from too much tension. If you don't tug enough, he'll get away.
If you catch a big enough fish, the Pond Owner will give you a reward. Usually these are Rupees, but really big fish yield much better rewards.
Making the Most of Your Stay-
You'll note that somewhere in the middle of the pond is a log sticking out of the water, where Link can stand on. Cast in this area and you're pretty much guaranteed to rake in the largest fish of the pond!
-
Time passes at the Fishing Farm, but at a slower rate than at other areas of Hyrule. Wait long enough and you'll see it raining in the pond, increasing your chances of a catch!
-
After you've won the major prize in each age division, you'll be able to find the Sinking Lure. The position of the Lure is random, but you'll most likely find it at one of these locations:
-
On the log mentioned above
-
Between the rocks near the little stream that feeds the pond
-
Near a crack along the perimeter
Using a Sinking Lure, you're more likely to get a fish nibbling on your line. Having the Lure is also the only way to sucker the Hylian Loach onto your line. -
There is a creature in the pond called the Hylian Loach, an eel-like fish that can only be attracted with the Sinking Lure. Getting this catch, weighing about 35 pounds, isn't much of a reward: the pond owner calls you a cheat and refuses to keep your catch on the record!
