The Lost Woods is the main forest of Hyrule, which marks the country's eastern border. The Lost Woods is known to be where fairies come from, and also the home of many magical spirits. However, the spirits of the Lost Woods are very hostile to visitors: any who enter the Lost Woods are transformed into monsters one day and one night after venturing into the forest. By contranst, the only people allowed to enter the Woods, the Kokiri, will die should they leave the forest. None of the Kokiri ever age, and each Kokiri has their own guardian fairy.
Kokiri Forest
The Kokiri Forest is the main village where the Kokiri live, close to the meadow of the Great Deku Tree. Here, there are no Pieces of Heart, three Gold Skulltula and four Gossip Stones. The Forest remains constant 24 hours a day, and time stands still here.
KOKIRI HOUSES
Link's House: The actual location where you start the game, and where Young Link returns to should you turn off the game in the overworld. Adult Link will also return here if you save and quit the game in this house. Inside this house is a sign posting your records for the various mini-games, and there is a pot containing a powerup as well. If Adult Link breaks Malon's record on the Lon Lon Ranch Obstacle Course, a cow will also be there in the future.
Saria's House: Saria is Link's next-door neighbour. Inside and above her house are plenty of Recovery Hearts; some other Kokiri may be in Saria's house, but we never actually see Saria herself in there!
Mido's House: The Kokiri's chief (bully) has four chests containing Recovery Hearts and Rupees, along with Mr Cranky himself when he's not blocking your route.
House of Twins: Though only one of the twins are home, the pots in this house do contain a few Rupees.
Kokiri Shop: Sells Recovery Hearts, Deku Nuts, Arrows, Deku Sticks, Seeds and Shields.
House of the Know-it-All Brothers: As Young Link, you can receive the basic knowledge on how to control Link (ie, the stuff you found in the manual). Adult Link can enjoy a general chit-chat with them.

THE BEGINING
This is the location where you start the adventure. You begin the adventure in your own house, having just been woken up by Navi the fairy while trying to catch some sleep, since recently you've been having this bad bout of insomnia because of your nightmares. When you can finally be bothered to wake up, about the only thing you can do is leave the house and meet with Saria, who encourages you to go to the Great Deku Tree with Navi.
The only way to the Great Deku Tree's Meadow is blocked by Mido, who only allows you to pass once you have equipped a sword and shield. Once you have both items you can proceed to the Great Deku Tree. The Deku Tree will say he's been cursed: say you're brave enough to break the curse, and you'll be have access to Inside the Deku Tree. If you say you don't have enough courage, you won't be able to proceed until you agree to break the curse.
RECOVERY OF THE KOKIRI EMERALD
After you break the curse from Inside the Deku Tree, the Great Deku Tree will tell you that despite your efforts, he was doomed to die before Link even started the quest. There is still hope, however: the Deku Tree will tell you the story of the Triforce and say that you must travel beyond the forest and to Hyrule Town to meet with the 'Princess of Destiny'. The exit from the forest to Hyrule Field is at the far west of the forest; a Kokiri was blocking the way before, but now you can proceed.
THE RETURN
After you rendezvous with the Princess the Deku Tree is talking about, the other Kokiri will tell you that Saria wants to meet with you, and is waiting in her 'usual spot' in the Lost Woods. If you try to prove to the Kokiri that it is safe to leave the forest, they won't believe you.
Adult Link
When Link returns to his homeland after seven long years, he finds it completely changed. Without the Great Deku Tree to watch over the forest, it has now been overrun with hostile forest creatures. The Kokiri, who are stil as young as Link was before Link pulled the Master Sword from the Pedastal of Time, do not reconise Link and ask why he has a fairy following him around. It turns out that Mido has told the Kokiri that Link did something wrong to the Great Deku Tree, causing it to die and the forest to be overrun with monsters. Saria is the only one who defended Link's actions, but she has now gone to the Forest Temple and has not returned.
THE AWAKENING
The monsters of Kokiri Forest will continue to dominate the area, and will only be gone after the Forest Temple is restored to its tranquil self. Once this occures, a new Deku Tree will begin growing in the meadow, Kokiri Forest will become the safe place it always was, and the Kokiri will come out of hiding.
The Lost Woods
At the Lost Woods there are two Pieces of Heart, two Gossip Stones and three Gold Skulltula. Time stands still and the Woods remain constant.
The main area of the Lost Woods is where most of Hyrule's magical spirits roam. Those who have been transformed into monsters by the Woods' magic, called Skull Kids, have their own village hidden somewhere in the Lost Woods, but where is not known. There are many forest creatures in the woods, both friend and foe.
The Lost Woods are basically a maze of passages. Take the correct turns to reach landmarks, but taking the incorrect turn will result in you returning to Kokiri Forest. The descriptions of the landmarks vary over seven years, but remain constant during the day and night. All directions are given assuming you start from the Kokiri Forest entrance.
YOUNG LINK'S DESTINATIONS
Sacred Forest Meadow: Right, left, right, left, left, straight ahead, left, right. When you first journey here, you can listen for the music to guide your way, and you will meet Kaepora Gaebora as you go.
Lone Skull Kid: Left. He is a good friend of Saria; any friend of Saria is a friend of his.
Bridge: Left, left. This bridge leads outside the forest, and is a marker for Kokiri not to cross, and a marker for outsiders to return before they are overcome by the magic. A soft soil patch is near the entrance to this area.
Skull Kid Ensemble: Right. These musically-minded Skull Kids enjoy a good tune, but need a wind instrument to make thier band complete. There is a target there also, which can be used for practise by armed Kokiri.
Goron City Warp: Right, left. This marked area leads to the Land of the Gorons, but is obstructed by boulders.
Zora's River Warp: Right, left, right. At the bottom of the pool, which is about six meters deep, there is a route to the Sleepless Waterfall at Zora's River.
Business Scrub Central: Right, left, right, left, left, left. Two Business Scrubs are here, as is their breeding ground. A soft soil patch is near one of the Scrubs.
After you re-enter the Woods after learning Saria's Song, you will meet up with Kaepora Gaebora.
ADULT LINK'S DESTINATIONS
Same as above except:
Meeting Place: Left. You'll meet either the Chief Carpenter's Son or Fado here, depending on where you're up to in the Event Item Trading. After you've completed the trading process, there will be a lone Skull Kid there. Because the Kid won't reconise Link as a Kokiri, he will be hostile, but you can kill him to yield high-value Rupees!
Skull Kids' Grove: Right. These musical Skull Kids have now turned hostile, but they still carry large amounts of Rupees!
Vacant Grove: Right, left, right, left, left, left. The friendly, if cheeky, Business Scrubs who once adorned the Lost Woods are now missing.
Sacred Forest Meadow
At the Sacred Forest Meadow there are no Pieces of Heart, three Gossip Stones and one Gold Skulltula. It remains constant at all times of day, and time does not pass here.
The Sacred Forest Meadow lies in the far north of the Lost Woods. It is here that most of the forest spirits reside, and is also where the Forest Temple is located. However, due to the waning power of the Lost Woods' guardian spirit, several hostiles are making their mark here.
Young Link
When Young Link first approaches the Sacred Forest Meadow, he will have to first defeat the Wolfos who guards the entrance to the main maze. Once this is done, you will have to proceed through a minor maze: view will switch to overhead, and the area is basically going past a few tight turns and some Mad Scrubs. Just follow the map and all will be well.
Once you get to the far side of the maze, you'll be able to go through a narrow passage to Saria, or reach the top of the maze using a ladder opposite that passage. Near Saria is the Minuet of Forest warp point. The first time you approach Saria, she will teach you a song.
Adult Link
When Adult Link reaches the Sacred Forest Meadow, he won't have to battle anything until he reaches the maze: armed Moblin will charge at him with their spears. If you get anywhere near a Moblin he will charge you; the only way to kill them is with the Hookshot. Don't worry: a single hit from the Hookshot is all it will take to send a Moblin packing, and you can proceed past the maze the same way that Young Link did. Another (easier) way to pass this section is to play the Scarecrow's Song near the maze's entrance, which will enable you to grapple Pierre and jump accross the maze straight to the far side, risking fights with virtually no Moblin.
Once you reach the passage which leads to Saria's grove, you will have to battle it out with a giant Moblin. He swings his club to the ground, causing a minor earthquake and sending Link flying should he get hit. The only way to pass him is to avoid his attacks: he can only fire down the left, middle or right of the passage, so once he starts swinging his club head to the other side of the passage. Once you're close to him, use a Rolling Attack to pass him. The Moblin won't be able to turn around, so you can either just run straight to Saria's grove or kill him with the sword.
Once you reach the grove where Saria was, Sheik will appear and teach you the Minuet of Forest before vanishing. That done, you are now free to enter the Forest Temple.
