Less than half of Tenjo Tenge 4 was screened on 11 September due to the sudden disappearance of the sound track. (Subtitles or not, watching anime with no sound is not a very satisfactory experience.) Less than half of the advertised Kyo Kara Mao 1 was seen for the same reason. We did not get very far into Shingetsutan Tsukihime 6 either. Try and guess why. The fall-back programming was heavily fallen back on. The problem was in each recording, not with the equipment, so once the common factor of those three is tracked down, the problem should never happen again. (You know, like that problem with the virus-checker screen was never supposed to happen again.)

Shingetsutan Tsukihime seems to be setting a record for the advertised feature most often postponed at the last moment. The reason for the last one was the AGM going over-time.

Extensive renovations in the Rotunda pushed us to H4 in the nearby Robert Menzies Building on 27 November 2004, and we seem likely to be there in December too.

We were back in the Rotunda at the beginning of January, even though ongoing renovations had the floor plan looking like it belonged in a game of Doom. The second part of January had us in Engineering E1. (As the air conditioning worked in reality as well as theory, it was cooler than the theatre in Humanities we were shunted off to before.) Due to everyone getting lost on the way to E1, unexpected computer bugs during screening, and Appleseed being a longer movie than allowed for, major pruning had to be done to the previously advertised programme.
 
 
We were back in Engineering E1 again in February, at the location shown on this link at http://www.mas.org.au/images/clayton.gif.

Something new was tried in December. Members brought along anime, the ones which were screened being chosen by lottery. The whole thing went over so well it will be repeated in the future. (Give advance warning if you intend to bring something on tape. Technology is at such a level that one thing no longer normally found at screenings is a VCR.)

The meeting was actually held in Ashwood Hall on the 27th itself, after the official screening-time began.

After moving from Ashwood to Elsternwick, the MAS immediately left Elsternwick (to the lack of surprise of all who attended the one screening there.) The new permanent location for MAS screenings is now the Northcote Town Hall, 189 High Street, Northcote. The place has lifts, so wheelchair access is no problem even when we get shoved upstairs. (The actual room may get moved around from time to time, but there will be signs up, and as a last resort just ask at the door.) 23 September is the annual MANIFEST at Melb Uni, but after that it's Northcote again. Note new times of 12:30 to 5:30. (The change is due to Northcote Town Hall wanting us totally out by 6 p.m.)

Once more the MAS had a BYO segment (where members bring along 20-minute-ish anime they figure would be nice for everyone else to see, the ones that do get screened being chosen by lottery) this time on 28 April and featuring Hayate the Combat Butler, Ghost Talker's Daydream, and Fortune Quest.

The big surprise for the 26th of May was, of course, the unexpected cancellation of the entire screening. The MAS has had to make last minute changes before, but finding out about this cancellation after the official starting time was just a little too last minute. The screening had been scuttled in favour of a function that used all the rooms in the town hall (including the projection room they moved us to the last time mysterious things happened with the regular booking), and involved a brass band that was playing next to my ear at the time. When I asked how the screening could be cancelled without anyone knowing about it, the reply then was "I don't know." The story now is that after cancelling all bookings for that day, they tried to contact a committee member on a mobile phone (which, as it transpires, was switched off), and gave up trying. They settled for looking surprised when people showed up for the screening, saying "It was cancelled", and in at least my case "Somebody else showed up too, but they left."

Actually everybody showed up; the usual anime crowd, the people with the projection equipment, the library, and a few first timers. (How many may never be known.)

A formal notification of the cancelletion was eventually put up on the door. It was, by this time, twenty minutes past one.(Note that normal screening times these days is 12:30 to 5:30)

The second Saturday of January was Australia Day, and the hall was not available.  There was no moving of screening dates due to lack of an extra week in the month, and no changing of location. In short, there was no second screening in January 2008.


A reminder: MAS screenings are normally on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, which does NOT always work out as every second Saturday.
