Place of birth: New Orleans, LA
Background: Anne came from a wealthy family that was a pillar of the New Orleans community. At least, that was the impression her father promoted. In reality, the family's fortune had long since been lost, and though he was an expert at juggling debts, he was constantly in fear of his creditors catching up with him. William Toussaint was a professional gambler, a fact that contributed significantly to the family's financial situation. When Anne was a teenager, her father's losses finally did catch up with him. He owed a lot of money to some very disreputable people, and when he couldn't pay the debt, they gave him the option of carrying out the execution of one of their business rivals. He got caught and has been in prison ever since.
This is something Anne does not like to talk about.
Never really feeling that she fit in anywhere, Anne felt even more isolated after her father's conviction. She was embarrassed by him and wanted to distance herself from any association with him. But because the family had been rather well known in the city, that was impossible. As a teenager, Anne became very withdrawn and introspective. She threw herself into her studies with the goal of getting a scholarship to some school as far from New Orleans as she could get.
Practically reduced to living on the street, Anne's mother finally had to go in search of a job. The only person she could find to give her work was the proprietor of a voodoo shop in the French Quarter.
The old woman who ran the shop, Madame Dulane, became Anne's closest friend and confident. It was through her that Anne first became fascinated with the occult, and then learned to approach such topics
with skepticism. "The only real curse," the old woman often told her, "is the curse a man puts on himself when he believes too deeply."
For a time, Anne earned extra money doing Tarot readings in a little room in the back of the shop. She was good at it, but never really got caught up in it. She thought of it as a game, probing people's minds
and getting them to reveal their secrets without ever realizing it. When the time came to go off to college, selecting a major was a simple matter. She eventually earned her Ph.D. in psychology.
She spent her college years in California. At first, she was intimidated by the freer lifestyle, but gradually, she learned to fit in. She discovered in herself a need for adventure and excitement. She tried
surfing, bungee jumping, and any number of other dangerous activities, and though she enjoyed doing those things, they left her feeling somehow empty. The adventure had no purpose, the risk offered no reward except mere survival, and that wasn't enough.
The decision to join the FBI was not something Anne really thought about. The opportunity presented itself and she took it. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and she hasn't had any regrets about
it.
Education: B.S. and Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford.
Career and qualifications: Top of her class at Quantico. She spent a couple of years in the New York field office, and was then transferred to the behavioral sciences unit, where she perfected her skills as a profiler.
Hobbies and quirks: She collects things. All sorts of things. She has a souvenir of just about every event in her life, major or minor. As a result, her home tends to look a little like a flea market.
Pets: Anne has a parrot named Red Bird, which she inherited from a neighbor. The bird has an extensive, if rather embarrassing vocabulary, including such line as "It's the cops! Hide the stash!" whenever it hears a doorbell ring.
Beliefs: Anne tends to be skeptical about everything. She can always come up with a rational explanation, even if that explanation is more far-fetched than just believing in something a little bit fantastic.
Psychological profile: Anne is very rational and logical in her approach to most things. She rarely shows emotion, usually appearing cheerful no matter what she's really thinking or feeling. She's very slow to anger and doesn't hold grudges. She tends to be somewhat disorganized, often misplacing small items like car keys and shoes, but she has an excellent memory for trivial details. Although she guards some secrets very closely, she is generally very open and out-going. At times, though, she just wants to be left alone and goes through periods of not really wanting to see or speak to anyone.
