[5:12PM EDT, Karellon University]
The five agents divided into two rental cars and headed for the crime scene.
The campus was quiet. Those few students who were out and about were traveling in groups, moods visibly somber. Word had spread fast.
As they approached ‘Greek Street’, as it was known, still a block or so from where the police had cordoned off the area, a car was parked slightly askew and a harried set of parents were loading hastily packed boxes into the mini van while their daughter looked on with a mixture of fear, relief and anger.
Kate couldn’t blame any of them for their reactions. Her own kids were nearing college age at lightening speed. She wasn’t looking forward to it under the best of circumstances, and she could only imagine how she would react as a parent to something like this. It was a parallel she had been trying not to draw, but it was inescapable.
"Looks like the exodus has begun," she said.
Sandra nodded from her spot behind the wheel and stifled a yawn. She looked exhausted, Kate noted, and in the back seat, Flynn seemed to be fighting a loosing battle against dozing off. As for herself, all thoughts of sleep had vanished the moment they heard the news, but she knew she probably didn’t look any more alert than the rest of the team.
"We should get copies of the missing girls’ class schedules," Sandra said. "Find out if they all had some class in common."
"Or a professor they all studied with," Kate added.
"Or if they were all in a class with a particular classmate," Flynn mumbled.
Kate nodded as they approached the police line, showed their ID, and the officer guarding the area stepped aside to let them drive through.
"On a campus this size, there are bound to be several coincidences among them. One of those should lead us to a solution," Kate said, then thought a moment and added, "Maybe."
