8:45 A.M.
> "Okay," Sari started, "does anyone have anything planned fo---"
> *Hmeeep* *hmeeep*
Eithne cocked her head slightly, wondering briefly whom it could
be on the phone - the team was all here, and.. she mentally shrugged,
telling herself that, quite honestly, it was none of her buisness.
It was probably something that didn't even involve the rest of Delta.
> Sari pulled her cellular phone out of her pocket and pulled up the
> antenna. "Agent Kelly."
> Sari listened for a moment, a variety of emotions running across her
> face, then "Just a moment, sir...." She handed the phone to Eithne.
> "He wants to talk to you."
Eithne's jaw tightened slightly. 'Sir'? Was it some kind of director?
What did they want with her?
For a slipt second she was positively, absolutely certain that it was
about Beth, but in the next second she realized how ridiculous that
was. If it was about Beth, why would they call Sari? And if it was
about Beth.. well, considering the fact that Beth was under the
devoted care of the mental health division of a hospital far away in
Boston.. it was unlikely, to say the least.
> Eithne took the phone carefully as if it were a breakable object.
> 'Who is it?' she mouthed.
> "Damien," Sari answered softly. Eithne nodded and put the phone
> up to her mouth. "...Sir?"
As she listened, thousands of questions appeared in her mind, only
thing in common connecting the various threads - the word 'why'.
Why would anyone chose her? She was inexperienced, she was..
She was Sari's replacement.
She fumbled through the rest of the meal, certain that her complexion
had gone from the normally pale shade to a pure white. She pushed the
thoughts out of her mind anyway, focussing intently on her glass of
orange juice.
Sandra and Kate left, and, after the other three had finished, she
glanced across the table to Flynn. "Shall we go talk to Jennifer,
or did you have something else in mind?"
Flynn shook his head. "No, that's fine - that's actually what I was
just about to suggest." He turned to Damian. "Well, I suppose you're
stuck with the two of us this morning..."
Eithne gave a small, half-hearted smile, and then turned to Sari.
"Would you like us to.." She stopped, not quite certain what it was
she was going to say (drive her to the airport? Help her collect her
things?) but Sari just shook her head sadly.
"No, I'll go pack and get a taxi when I'm ready." She stood, briefly
touching Eithne's shoulder. "Good luck, Eithne.." The woman looked
at the two men.
"Good luck with the case, maybe we'll see each other again."
She walked away, presumably back to the room, and Eithne repressed
an urge to shudder from the chill which ran up her spine despite
the heat of the summer. She ran a hand through her hair, and forced
a cheer into her voice which didn't quite reach her heart.
"So. Who gets to drive?"
